About
Pointe-a-Calliere, the birthplace of Montreal and a National Historic Site, offers visitors the opportunity to explore history through an original underground circuit leading through archaeological excavations. At the start of their visit, an immersive multimedia show presents a high-speed view of the city's history, the remains come to life and the count down begins! The museum also offers year-round temporary local and international exhibitions. For Montreal's 375th anniversary in May 2017, Pointe-a-Calliere inaugurated a new pavilion highlighting Fort Ville-Marie.

    Interactive and interesting
This is a very interactive museum, well presented for families and children. There are definitely plenty of interactive exhibits for children, and while I would agree that it may not be a very “formal” and “serious” museum for those seeking academic rigour, there is more than enough intellectually significant content, including a large excavation of the original city of Montreal and plenty of historical artefacts. The colonial exhibits were interesting but conspicuously devoid of much Indigenous content: in the current day and age this seems an unfortunate oversight. The visiting Egyptian exhibit was actually quite interesting, particularly for those who don’t have the opportunity to visit flagship museums with large Egyptian exhibits regularly. I will say it is a bit hard to navigate to the underground entrance from the doors. Once you’ve done that, though, the layout is quite linear and well-marked. All in all it was an enjoyable visit for the whole family, from kids to adults.

    Amazing exhibits, interactive, complicated orientation
I was attracted to this museum by the temporary exhibition of Egyptian artifacts "Trois mille ans sur le Nil". The museum was large and it was quite complicated for us to find our way around. Several times we returned to places where we had already been without wanting to, or on the other hand, we could not find what we were looking for. In the end, however, we saw what we wanted to see. The exhibition of artifacts from ancient Egypt was simply fascinating. The exhibits were wonderful and the entire exhibition was very nicely presented. The section devoted to the history and creation of Montreal was also amazing. The pirate ship was certainly interesting for children (but not only for them). The museum is very interactive and certainly no one will be bored in it. If you take an elevator to the top floor, then you can find a small observation deck there. There is a nice souvenir shop in the museum with a lot of books about art and history.

Informative and interesting way to spend your time.
Very interesting and well-organized museum for everyone looking to learn the history of Montreal. Many details and artifacts, I liked the presentation of each time period. Also, the people working here were extremely friendly and helpful! Great place to visit, especially on a hot or rainy day.

    Very good Museum
Very interesting museum to see what Montréal was like. The pirates exhibit is like an interactive playground along with some games and very fun for kids. The temporary Egypt exhibit was well done. The layout is odd and we found ourselves backtracking a lot to see everything but the signs are good. Allow at least 2 hours to see everything.

    Don’t miss this unique museum!
We loved this! Went with our 3rd and 7th graders. Everything is displayed beautifully. They incorporate technology so thoughtfully and judicially in the archeological dig to increase your understanding of what happened and how things worked. We have been to dozens of museums across several countries and never seen such a strategic integration of tech + artifacts. Tons of interactive features. The kids loved the pirate and privateer section. We were happy to see attention paid to First Nations Indigenous people, not just settlers, although this emphasis could be increased quite a bit. Definitely make this a part of your Montreal trip!

    Amazing learning and wonderful museum
We absolutely enjoyed our visit. You have options to buy tickets online as you get priority to enter. They start with history of Montreal its culture and people. The movie is 17 minutes and very well done. Its a must watch. Then you move around the gallery where they start with ancient history and speak to the settlers. There are models and relics. They speak to the diversity of the area. They have a pirate ship thats tells you whether it's a pirate life for you. We loved the explanation and the interaction of the games. We headed to the Egyptian section where we saw shabti, relics, hieroglyphics. We learnt alot, it was a great experience!

good experience for history of the area in site-specific installation
Very worth the visit. It uses the site, which was variously an indigenous village, a French mission (unsuccessful in converting the locals to Catholicism), a cemetery, an inn, a warehouse, and a grand building for an insurance company’s headquarters. When the insurance building suffered a fire, the land was filled in for a park. Then, it was re-excavated, and the foundations of the building serve as part of the exhibits for the museum. Titles in English, French, and some in a language that might be an Iroquoian dialect. Kid-friendly. If I have a complaint, it's that the signage doesn't help visitors to make the most of the experience. For example, there's something labeled "Belvedere" in both French and English. It's not clear that that is the observation deck, which has great views out over the water. Getting there requires backtracking, as does the small exhibit on the mezzanine, and the changing exhibit on the first floor. The museum is structured to have people start at the multimedia movie (terrific visuals, but a bit superficial on the history) and then go into the basement, and from there underground to the other buildings. Because of the the length of the movie and the infrequent showings, you'll be best getting tickets, going up to the 3rd floor deck, then the special-exhibits area, and then coming back to the lobby in time for the movie (in French and English, no subtitles), and then proceeding on the main path through the buildings.

History of Montreal and Special Exhibits
Looking to learn a little more about Montreal (and for an indoor activity), we visited Pointe-à-Callière's location in Old Montreal. The walk through of the history of the city was very interesting and we enjoyed the interactive parts. The special exhibit on Egypt was okay, but wasn't excellent. I would definitely recommend the Montreal history part, with the special exhibits as a bonus.

History of the Port of Montreal
Step through the doors of Point-a-Calliere Museum in Montreal and walk back several hundred years of the history of Montreal. Tracing its history from the 1600’s until today this Museum does a good job of tracing the path that Montreal took to becoming the city it is today. While there my partner & I very much enjoyed the Ancient Egypt Exhibit on loan from a Museum in Turin Italy. This was a very nice experience however one drawback was a rather confusing layout of the Museum that had us making many wrong turns Along the way.

    Very informative
We visited this museum on June 22. There is a car park at 285 Rue Saint-Antoine (Quartier International), about a mile from the museum. In this museum you will learn about the history of the city of Montreal. Our visit started with a multimedia presentation. Each seat has headphones. You can choose your language: French or English. The first stop after the show is about the first inhabitants and the first French settlers. Followed by more recent history. There is also an exhibition "Come aboard! Pirates or privateers?". The kids will love it, it's very interactive. The temporary exhibition is about how the Egyptians lived in the time of the Pharaohs.

If you are interested in the history of Montreal, this museum is a fun and interactive way to explore it. The museum uses technology to create a unque experience for visitors. We spent about 4 hours before being "museumed" out. Not recommended for small children, but kids 7+ should find it engaging.

Probably one of the coolest history museums that I've ever been to. Walking through the labyrinth of old building foundations and an old sewer was unique and memorable. The lighting and exhibits really made this museum enjoyable.

I visited the museum already twice and if you are interested in the history of Montreal, I would definitely recommend going there. You’ll need a few hours, because it is really big and has a lot to offer. Also some interactive things, so it’s interesting for kids and grown-ups. They also have a small restaurant at the top floor which serves great food. Also the gift shop is very cute!

This is a very interesting and well-presented museum built atop several historic sites dating back to the 1600s. It's really cool to see the ruins of Old Montréal right under your feet, and the exhibits are presented very artistically with engaging multimedia displays. Finding your way around is a little tricky at first, but if you follow the A-E sections more or less in order, it helps.

This was probably the best attraction we visited in Montreal. It’s billed as an archeological exhibit, but it’s more of a full historical account of the city. This should be a first stop and a must-do for anyone visiting the city for the first time. The exhibits are incredibly thorough and well thought out. The movie is phenomenal. The underground sewer tunnel was a highlight. I can’t think of one bad thing. Absolutely, go to this museum if you are in Montreal!

This is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited. A hidden gem in Old Montreal, the Pointe a Calliere really brings the city’s history and archaeology to life via brilliant multimedia and interactive storytelling amongst the ruins of Ville Marie, the marketplace and other historic sites. I highly recommend starting your visit off with the 17-minute video at the start and then head down to the exhibits with the archaeological remnants. It’s really mind-blowing to be walking on glass on top of what’s left of the first fort from 1642. I also enjoyed sitting outside and admiring Vieux Port and the St. Lawrence during lunch at the bistro. I learned so much during my visit there and already want to return!

We visited this fantastic museum today and it was one of the best we've ever seen. They've done an amazing job with showing us the city's history. The see through floors and the sewer tunnel were a great idea.

The only improvement they could have made was better signage. We went to the building across the street and waited there thinking that the museum was closed. It's not, the entrance was across the street.

This is a great museums if you get the self-guided tour so you can explore the ruins of old Montreal. There are also some great artifacts to look at.
We got the guided tour however and it was somewhat underwhelming. Our guide took forever to explain things and we stayed in the museums for two hours! It was a small museums… Her explanations were not very good and she was reading off of the room explanations. Highly do not suggest this type of tour…
Good museum for an understanding of Ville Marie, the old Montreal.

This unique museum of archaeology and history shows discoveries made on the same spot that the museum currently stands. The museum houses six buildings, Eperon, Palace Royale-archaeological crypt, the Ancienne-Douane, the Youville pumping station, Archaeological field school and Mariners house. It perfectly takes you on 1000 year journey through time from the first settlements.

Despite being in a prime location, I had not heard much about this museum. However, it was one of the most impactful museum experiences I've ever had. The layout was definitely confusing at first, but once you understand that you're following the path of the archeological digs it begins to make more sense. Also the staff will gladly assist if you need. Standing in the exact spot that the events described took place was quite an experience, and the museum uses music very effectively. I walked away feeling like I had learned about the history of Montreal in a way that would stay with me for a long time. I recommend exploring every bit of this museum if you have the time. I spent about 2 and half hours here but could have spent longer if I didn't have a time constraint.
