We paid the entrance and walked through the museum ourselves. All the displays are in English and French and quite interesting. It’s not large (plan no more than 2hrs even if you like to read all the plaques), but gives a pretty comprehensive history of both the château itself and Montreal. In the back their is a cute “mini” version of the gardens the château once had. Very pretty and free to walk through. Note: part of the museum is in the château’s “basement” which is accessed by stairs. I did not see an elevator so I’m not sure that it is accessible.

Very informative and interesting museum located near the river in old Montreal. It is well laid out. An intact important building from hundreds of years ago. We’ll worth a visit

We visited this house on June 21. There is a car park at 285 Rue Saint-Antoine (Quartier International), about a mile from the chateau. It is called a castle, but it looks nothing like a medieval castle. In the 17th century it would be a large house. You get to know the history of the house and its inhabitants. The staff is dressed in period clothing.

The house is an interesting tour of 12 rooms. There is a lot of Montreal history and artifacts. However, the artifacts have little to do with the house. The house is in no way restored to look like it was. So it is really a museum, not a historic in any sense that I've seen.

We visited this location many years ago and were eager to visit it again. The building is well-maintained and the exhibit is laid out in an easy-to-follow manner. Some of the headsets and phones that are placed throughout were not operating properly the day we visited. This was especially true of the tablets located in the basement which probably explained food storage, preparation etc. As we were exiting I mentioned the technical problems to the young woman who was selling the tickets and she said she'd let the tech people know, but didn't offer any refund or the opportunity to return on a different day for free.

Plenty of exhibits and rooms to linger in, whilst learning a lot of the city history. The use of headphones at points in most rooms to listen in to historical figures giving 2-4 minute snippet stories, really helped maintain our interest. The gardens, which can be freely accessed from the streets, is worth a look around also

The Chateau Ramezay Historic Site and Museum of Montreal is a wonderful place that takes the visitor way back in time. It provides a trip through time and a taste of what it was like all that time ago. Worth a visit.

If you’re at all interested in the story of Montreal, this is the place to go. There are fascinating narratives and artefacts from all stages of the city’s history. We didn’t take the tour, just went round at our own pace. Then as you leave there are the gardens, a heady mix of plants, flowers and vegetables, a veritable oasis of calm in the busy city.

Great experience. Suggest you wait for the free guided tour in French or English. We had Barbara as our guide. She was excellent. She gave us more of a history of french exploration and settlement of Eastern and Southern Canada and middle US, together with an overview of the chateau and its prominent people. Then tour by yourself at your leisure armed with the knowledge provided. The Ramezay names relates to its time as the residence of the Governor of Montreal

This museum provides a really interesting overview of the history of Montreal and has lots of really nice artefacts and displays. It's let down by a lot of the labels being hard to read because of text size, lighting, position and angle. Also, one of the guides was kind of an a-hole -- I wasn't on a guided tour but he kept fussing at me about where I was standing and how I was carrying my bag, etc. I wasn't rushing around or being careless or getting in people's way. Just really odd and annoying.
