- abiWheaton, Illinois16 contributionsVery interesting and not too bigWe paid the entrance and walked through the museum ourselves. All the displays are in English and French and quite interesting. It’s not large (plan no more than 2hrs even if you like to read all the plaques), but gives a pretty comprehensive history of both the château itself and Montreal. In the back their is a cute “mini” version of the gardens the château once had. Very pretty and free to walk through. Note: part of the museum is in the château’s “basement” which is accessed by stairs. I did not see an elevator so I’m not sure that it is accessible.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten August 8, 2023
- 331325 contributionsExcellent little museumVery informative and interesting museum located near the river in old Montreal. It is well laid out. An intact important building from hundreds of years ago. We’ll worth a visitVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten August 10, 2023
- AmarilisVosJabbeke, Belgium2,346 contributionsNice staffWe visited this house on June 21. There is a car park at 285 Rue Saint-Antoine (Quartier International), about a mile from the chateau. It is called a castle, but it looks nothing like a medieval castle. In the 17th century it would be a large house. You get to know the history of the house and its inhabitants. The staff is dressed in period clothing.Visited June 2023Written August 18, 2023
- Gabe HNorthern Virginia, Virginia172 contributionsInteresting Museum, rather odd for an historic homeThe house is an interesting tour of 12 rooms. There is a lot of Montreal history and artifacts. However, the artifacts have little to do with the house. The house is in no way restored to look like it was. So it is really a museum, not a historic in any sense that I've seen.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- MomRoccoChicago, Illinois538 contributionsInteresting Museum - Glitchy technologyWe visited this location many years ago and were eager to visit it again. The building is well-maintained and the exhibit is laid out in an easy-to-follow manner. Some of the headsets and phones that are placed throughout were not operating properly the day we visited. This was especially true of the tablets located in the basement which probably explained food storage, preparation etc. As we were exiting I mentioned the technical problems to the young woman who was selling the tickets and she said she'd let the tech people know, but didn't offer any refund or the opportunity to return on a different day for free.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 26, 2023
- LilacwheatyNottingham, United Kingdom850 contributionsGreat way to learn a little about the history of the cityPlenty of exhibits and rooms to linger in, whilst learning a lot of the city history. The use of headphones at points in most rooms to listen in to historical figures giving 2-4 minute snippet stories, really helped maintain our interest. The gardens, which can be freely accessed from the streets, is worth a look around alsoVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023

- Mark W1 contributionExtremely informative visit to understand the French history in MontrealGreat experience. Suggest you wait for the free guided tour in French or English. We had Barbara as our guide. She was excellent. She gave us more of a history of french exploration and settlement of Eastern and Southern Canada and middle US, together with an overview of the chateau and its prominent people. Then tour by yourself at your leisure armed with the knowledge provided. The Ramezay names relates to its time as the residence of the Governor of MontrealVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 13, 2024
- japanresident2015Tokyo, Japan7 contributionsBring your spectaclesThis museum provides a really interesting overview of the history of Montreal and has lots of really nice artefacts and displays. It's let down by a lot of the labels being hard to read because of text size, lighting, position and angle. Also, one of the guides was kind of an a-hole -- I wasn't on a guided tour but he kept fussing at me about where I was standing and how I was carrying my bag, etc. I wasn't rushing around or being careless or getting in people's way. Just really odd and annoying.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten June 10, 2024

History presented in recordings by the "employees" of the Chateau. Funny way to learn how the rich and politicians lived in that era. And about the history of Montreal.

Excellent look at history in the city. The experience does require guests to engage with the content by listening to the audios. Id recommend 1 hour or 2 if you’re really into history.

American dollars accepted here? Or do I need to exchange money?
Also - the parking - is it free or do i need to pay for parking. If I need to pay for parking, same questions regarding payment.
Thanks!

We used credit card to pay. They did not take Amex but any Visa or Master Card would do. Also, we walked, so and it is in town, so you'd have to find a garage or street parking. The majority of garages and street parking are automated in the city and take cash or credit (including Amex). We never had to pay more than $10 Canadian for several hours of garage parking.
