The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.

Nice to learn about the Jewish history of Montreal in general. Enjoyed the food stops. Plenty of food was served.
Because of the route taken, of which there is little control, we had two Bagel stops in a row. Then a sandwich, then a dessert, and then another sandwich. The tour guide was gracious and had plastic Ziplock bags for leftovers. I wish I would have known that there were two Bagel stops in a row. I would have probably eaten a quarter or half of each bagel and saved the rest. After eating two whole Bagels, you're a little full for the sandwich. The first three stops all occurred in less than an hour of the almost our tour. (Because it was a saturday, we didn't even eat at the usual spot.)
So save at least one of the bagels for later, or just take a bite of each. You'll still get two sandwiches, dessert, and maybe a pastry first.

Interesting tour and guide was knowledgeable and passionate about Jewish Montréal. Wish we had been able to introduce ourselves and play “Jewish Geography “ a bit to connect with others on the tour. It felt very impersonal and it didn’t need to be. Learning a bit about the current Jewish Montreal might have helped us connect, too. Adding info on current Jewish companies and involvement in local scene would paint a fuller picture.

We had a great learning experience, doing the Rabbis, Writers and Radicals tour with our guide Nicholas. Very thorough and contextualized, the tour really brought the history of the neighbourhood to life.

9.3/10! The tour guide was knowledgeable about the subject and willing to admit when they didn't know specific questions - a great combo! Also, the actual sites visited were ones I learned about through other sources - allowing for greater depth of discussion. The only downside was the rain and cold (in June no less), but that was a minor quibble, I took 0.7 off for Acts of God (true Judaism, that is). The small group size also meant that I could talk with group members and not feel that I'm missing some major event from the guide, as we could all see who was up to and ready for what. Had it not rained? 10/10!
