We had dinner here last night with family. Food was amazing. Our server Nicolas was outstanding. Will go back for sure. The ambience was lovely. Food was served in a manner that did not rush you and was delicious. Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to others!!

My girlfriend and I found ourselves in Montreal for an unexpected extra night due to bad driving conditions and were looking around for a good place to go for dinner on short notice. We quickly found ourselves routed to Mechant Boeuf and were not disappointed! We had the bison carpaccio and octopus skewers to start, my girlfriend had the filet mignon as her main, and I had the New York strip. I would highly recommend any of them! Perfectly cooked and seasoned mains, the apps were mouthwateringly good, and we found the pricing to be very reasonable. The service was top notch right from the moment we walked in and were seated, and our server Matthieu was highly attentive, kind and welcoming. I plan on visiting this restaurant every time I am in Montreal, and would recommend it to anyone!

It was my first time in Montreal with my partner and we were doing a lot of exploring. We walked by this restaurant many times and it looked very inviting. However, we both don't eat beef so we did not pay much attention. However, on one of our last days, I was looking for a spot for oysters and this placed popped up! They have a great Happy Hour deal for $1 oysters from 5-7pm. I called ahead and the hostess on the phone was very lovely and invited us to come in. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and sat at a table by the window. It was still early but there were already 6-7 tables in the restaurant.
We sat down and waited about 5 minutes before being greeted by our server, who was very lovely. We ordered 2 beers, which did take a while to get to our table and one of which was the wrong beer ordered (no issue though). For dinner, we had the poutine, onion soup, and we ordered 40 of their happy hour oysters. The server had to come back to double check what we ordered and said he was new.
After our oysters (which were AMAZING!) we waited about 20-25 minutes for our other items, which was longer than we were expecting. We were on a time crunch which is why we ordered the poutine and soup. We ate quickly and asked for the bill which came to around $100. Overall, the experience was good but the service could have definitely been better/faster. I would recommend this place and definitely would come back if I am ever in Montreal again.

We were a group of 9 - 4 adults and 5 kids ranging from ages 16-7. We were on vacation here and looking for a family friendly spot. There is no kids menu but they were very accommodating and was able to provide something for everyone! Our group of kids ranged from the adventurous to the super picky. The food was so good! One of the adults ordered the short ribs and it was divine! Most of us ordered a steak and it was cooked to perfection. The service was incredible. Everyone was so polite and kind. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

We went with my family to celebrate my kids birthday.
I ordered the Sirloin NY cut medium rare cook and they brought me a tied, almost environment temperature, no much flavor and almost dried meat. My dughter ordered the Ribeye Steak and the same, she got a tied to cold meat with not much flavour too. The rest of the family got fish, burger, smushed potato, and were really good.
Additionally when I made the reservation, they have a section asking what are you coming for? (Anniversary, Business, Date....) and I put that we went there to celebrate an Anniversary and we were exepcting a piece of cake and some candles, but we got nothing.
So, I have a suggestion for them, Change the name of the Restaurant, they don't know much about Meat or BOEUF.
Definitelly I don't recommend this restaurant to go if you feel attracted by the name of the Restaurant.

The most disheartening aspect of our dining experience wasn't just because it was New Year's Day; it was also my 50th birthday, a milestone we traveled from Toronto to celebrate. Our disappointment began when we were informed that the Tomahawk Dry Aged Steak, the very reason for our reservation, was unavailable. Subsequently, none of the three appetizers we desired—calamari, Caesar Salad, and Onion Soup—were in stock. Even our simple request for French fries with the Rib Eye met with the response that they were unavailable.
Despite our growing hunger, we decided to proceed. To the waiter's credit, he served us extra bread, but the extended wait for our steak—nearly an hour—tested our patience. When the Rib Eye finally arrived, it was not only cooked medium-rare instead of medium-well, but it also lacked seasoning and exhibited an unexpected chewiness, raising doubts about whether it was a rib-eye at all. Even with the 50% discount offered on one of the steaks, the experience failed to restore the celebratory joy one anticipates on a milestone occasion.
While this might be just another day for the restaurant, another customer experience, and business carries on, for individuals celebrating significant milestones with family, it means everything. The hope for a golden celebration was regrettably overshadowed by these unforeseen disappointments. The experience lingers far beyond the meal, impacting the essence of a golden celebration.

So where do I begin. The fact they offered a free third bottle of wine or that we had our meal completely comped? Simply stated, the chef has lost his mind or was fired and was never present for the dinner service tonight. The kitchen had no problem sending out cold food or even raw uncooked potatoes. Look, it was a long 2 1/2 hour dinner with wonderful friends and a very apologetic waiter and a kitchen run by a newby or a complete idiot to the restaurant world, I don’t know. I tried to take the raw hassle back potatoes back to quiz the chef on their thoughts on the culinary arts and was blocked by management who at that point comped the whole meal. Bottom line is this restaurant has serious issues in the kitchen and is best avoided if you’re on vacation in old town Montreal. There are plenty of other choices available. PS. how does a steak house run out of dry aged beef which is a special notation on the menu? Chef was already or should be fired!

We went to mechant boeuf about a year ago and we loved it!
We decided to go tonight because of the heavy rain and storms outside and the proximity of the place to our hotel.
We we're pleased to see a new menu with some new offerings, and also a lot of new staff.
We had Nolen as our server and he was not only quick to answer all of our questions and help us navigate the new menu, he was also very polite and had a comforting smile.
The smash burger was surprisingly good for the price and we would strongly suggest anyone to try the fried pork chops as they are delightful.
Daphne at the raw bar was also very helpful and very competent. She was able to explain to us the difference between each oysters that were offered and their taste. She opened them quickly and served them on a beautiful plate of ice with a nice presentation. We were pleased by how much she took cares of us and answered all of our questions.
We got the chebooktook and they were without any sand or residues, fresh and very tasty.
Maryjane at the bar also served us our coktails cold and fresh the way we like them.
She is a joyful and great barmaid.
Overall we had awesome night at the mechant boeuf and we will be back for more soon!

The waiter got our order wrong. The food was not that great for the price. I would not recommend this restaurant. We were very disappointed. We went to the keg last week, the food and service was way better. The food, especially the fries were cold. They then seemed to rush us out of the restaurant even though the error was on their part. The minute we finished our main meal, the waiter brought the bill, we were not even offered coffee or dessert. The food flavour and quality was poor, the service was poor and it was very loud. Atmosphere not that great. We gave it an honest try.

Right across from our hotel we noticed the menu in the window and were thrilled. We had 10pm dinner reservations but arrived early and they accommodated us at 9;30pm even though they were busy.
Service was prompt and friendly, food was delicious, steak was second to none without sauces but the sauces (bernaise and chimichurrie) were exceptional.
Their wine list was extensive and offered great choices.
This is not an economy steak house but worth every penny!!

Nice bistro with fish steak, poutine and other dishes. Nice decor and very good service. I tried the poutine and it was fun and good, although the dish was huge. My husband had steak with an excellent sauce—the Steak was good but a bit overcooked. We had a fun window seat and enjoyed watching Monteal-ers go home from work, walk their dogs, the cost was very reasonable for a nice dinner in a big city. And I had never tried poutine, so that was my highlight.

Our visit started out great, seated promptly and hors d’ouvres came within minutes. We had oysters and a cheese selection that was delicious. We ordered everything at the same time but our main course, chicken and steak, came at least 35-40 minutes later and the potatoes were cold. No apologies from the staff. Our waitress was kind and helpful but still, it was troublesome to see another table arrive after we did get their main courses served in a quicker time frame. We will not return.

I am not sure where to start, but I used to love this place...
To begin with, they have changed management and lost excellence in the process.
If you went during the summer and appreciated their staff as It was my experience, please take note they fired dannick, they fired nolen, they fired daphnee, they fired the old chef, they fired most faces we used to know and the barman is a french who speak very bad english with a bad attitude and not too experienced either. Where are steven and maryjane? they fired most of the team, I only recognized the metre d, still has rude, still all stressed and dont talk english very well so he messed up what we asked again and again.
Sadly, place is also getting dirtier, it seems they might have fired the janitor too. no toilet paper either, what a joke.
regarding food quality, there was none, and both me and my friend both got sick, we had both différents dishes(one being beef and the other being salmon based)
They really stopped caring about us and only cares about money.
If I could, I would have given them 0 stars!!
Used to be good, suffered from capitalism and stupid staff/management...

My wife and I recently went to Merchant Boeuf for my birthday. I hate to say this but this was by far the worst steak I have ever eaten, or at least tried to eat.
We both ordered the Picanha, and were advised by our waiter to get the best taste to have the steak done medium rare.
When the steak arrived my wife found it impossible to cut, and I myself was looking for a saw to get into it. The steak was cooked correctly, but after a few minutes of trying to cut into it and then forever to actually chew the steak i gave up. My wife didn't even get that far.
We told the waiter when he asked how the food was, and to his credit he went back and must have told someone because the manager came to our table.
He did offer to replace the steak, but as we said .... it seemed like a waste if it was to arrive the same as what we had.
As I told my wife, I don't understand how a steak could be that tough ... you would figure a good steak house should be able to cook a shoe and make it tender.
Anyway, it's too bad we were really looking forward to a good evening and this steak really was disgusting.
As I said, the review is on the food we received, the waiter was great and the atmosphere was really enjoyable ... too bad the steak could not match that.
My recommendation is to maybe try some place else for a good steak, some place that should know how to cook it better than here.

We had the boozy brunch today and ate the beef tartar, poutine and doughnut holes. All the food was great. Our server Philip was really nice, cheerful and extremely helpful. Would definitely come back!
