- BalkrishnaShroffMumbai, India24,009 contributionsDivine !!It is located just two minutes walk from Marienplatz. We never ever visit a church from sighr seeing point of view. We go inside, sit quietly for few few minutes and pray. St. Peter's Church was lavish. It's very soothing when you just close your eyes and sit at such a divine place. Worth visiting...Visited July 2023Written July 21, 2023
- Tunes79Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom432 contributionsCome for the View, Stay for the Wonderful InteriorSt Peter offers perhaps the best view of Munich. Located just across Marienplatz from the Rathaus, it has the huge advantage of being able to see the wonderful facade of the town hall from the top of its tower. It costs €5 to climb to the top up Barrow wooden stairways - quite steep but not so many of them as to make it too much of a trudge - and you get unparalleled views of the centre of the historic city. Even on a day when it wasn’t brilliantly clear, I could see the Olympiaturm and the shapes of the Bavarian Alps. You enter the tower from outside the church but emerge inside, where the gorgeously decorated ceiling and nave are worth sitting and admiring. A great church all round.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten September 6, 2023

- Travel with SeanMadison, Wisconsin536 contributionsCool Art and an Ancient CorpseInside the church, there are numerous art treasures to explore. What catches the eye immediately are the stunning frescos on the ceiling. Originally painted in the mid-18th Century, they were either destroyed or badly damaged during bombing in WW II and re-created at the end of the 20th Century. Keen observers with a knowledge of religious history will note the upside down cross, relevant because the namesake of the church, St. Peter, was crucified upside down. There are many other beautiful frescos and sculptures, some centuries old, not to overlook the high altar from the early 18th Century with a golden figure of St. Peter. There is also the glass casket with the remains of a martyr who lived in Rome around the year 250. Originally buried in the Roman catacombs, her remains were a gift to Munich in the 17th century.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2024
- Ray H29 contributionsWorth the walk up!About 300+ steps. The walk up was well worth it. WARNING to anyone who is claustrophobic. Avoid if you aren’t able to handle tight spaces. Gets very tight. Especially when some people are walking down the stairs and you’re trying to go up. It’s very cramped. The view is worth it. The top has a spot for you to rest. If you can handle all the stairs, I highly recommend!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 22, 2024
- ERFSU82Wellington, Florida1,560 contributionsThe views are worth the climb. The climb to the top is a bit of a leg burner, but well worth the panoramic views. It takes 10-15 minutes to walk up, and you can spend as long as you like at the top. The stairs down exit into the church, which is equally impressive to see. Well worth the visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 30, 2024
- LumpyspunSeattle, Washington17 contributionsWorth the price and the climbFun climb to the top. Might be tough for those afraid of heights or claustrophobic as the stairs get tight in some spots but there are places to stop and rest at the start and at the very top there are benches. Our kids flew up the stairs without a problem. The views are great especially if you time it with the glockenspiel showings at 11, 12, or 5 at marianolatz.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 12, 2024

If you have the stamina, it is worth walking the 300+ steps up to the top of the church. When you do, you will be greeted with the most amazing views of all of Munich. Just be prepared for feeling claustrophobic as you come up and down the tight stairs.

St. Peter's is Munich's oldest church, thus definitely worth visiting. Walk around this big Catholic church and admire all the altars, niches and paintings.

We found ourselves climbing the 306 steps of St Peters bell tower (Munich’s oldest church). A very tight squeeze; and quite tiring for the unfit - but worth it as it offered excellent views of Munich and its surrounds.

This is another place that only takes a short time to visit. The painted ceilings are amazing and the inside of the church is beautifully decorated. It is free to visit and doesn't take long to see.

Will there be a night service anytime between August 19-21? Also, is there an organ recital during this time, either at St. Peter's, or any other church in Munich?
Thank you,
Valerie
