This is a quiet square with a simple monument devoted to the Pioneers. It’s behind the Pointe-à-Callière Museum. Perfect for a breather.

This is an old square in the city. You see these a lot in Europe and it’s modeled the same. There are some shops and an old fire station.

This is one of the big squares in Old Montreal and an area surrounded by history. Also surrounded by historic buildings and some places to eat and drink. It's a good place to sit and rest in good weather.

Founder of the Sisters of Charity (i.e. Grey Nuns), she had her spiritual awakening after the death of her boot-legging husband (who sold illegal liquor to the Indians in exchange for their furs) and the death of 4 of her 6 children. Alone at age 30, she and a small band of like-minded women dedicated themselves to those in poverty.
The term "Grey Nun" was originally meant to be a snarky term of disrespect as it loosely translates to "drunken woman" in reference to her husband. However, the term stuck and the disrespect has long faded away. The proper term is "Sisters of Charity."
The remnants of her hospital are only present-day ruins and they are as well preserved as they can be, in this harsh climate. Her having used slave labor, which she had purchased, (both Indians and British prisoners) to build the hospital is not something the legacy focuses upon. She was a slave-owner. She was also the first native Canadian saint.
The whole of Place d'Youville is a treasure trove of history with a modern touch; the "hand" crawling around on top of a high building is an eye-catcher. It is very near to the Centre d'Historie de Montreal building (look for the Flemish scrolls on the side of this big red brick Fire House building).
Venture around a bit, look for the ruins of the mid-1700's hospital and Convent. Old Town Montreal is packed with history (and stories).

This is a biggish square. It didn't strike me as particularly exciting or interesting. There are some benches in the shade to sit on and there are a couple of museums lining the square. It was pretty average.

Above where use to be the St-Pierre River, sits Place d’Youville.
• Historical site it is where:
o the first boats landed
o In this place you can find also the Monument of the Pioneers (obelisk) (Monument aux Pionniers) that makes tributes to the founders of the city and first settlers.
• A part of this place was renamed “Place de la grande Paix” since it is here that Great Peace of Montreal treaty was signed between M. Louis-Hector de Calliere and 40 aboriginal nations in 1701.
Nice place to walk and remember.

A tree lined avenue with restored historical buildings flanked by the walls which were built 1717-38 .Easily walked and close to many other historical attractions.

Marie-Marguerite d'Youville lived in this place between 1747 and 1771.
She was founder of the Grey Nuns, helped the poor with shelter and food, and donated money to the hospital. The Sisters of Charity kept the house almost in its original state.
Admittance with a guide tour is free, but one has to make a reservation.

If you live in US or other area in Canada, want to have an European vacation, old Montreal is a good choice. Check the weather before you go.

A nice museum that showed the history of Montreal in a self guided tour. It was a nice break and for lovers of history a good stop.
