About
The centerpiece of Milan, the Duomo is one of Europe’s greatest architectural and cultural landmarks. As Italy’s largest church and one of the largest in the world, it took over 600 years to build. Today, the Duomo has a capacity of 40,000 people and is home to the world’s second-largest organ. Admire the wide selection of religious art on display inside, or marvel at the 3000 statues that line its Gothic exterior. Be sure to join one of the available Duomo tours, which include art tours and even rooftop tours, where you might be able to see as far as the Italian Alps. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Duomo di Milano
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

    Brilliant private fast track tour.
Lorella, our guide met us at the side of the Duomo. She carried a flag so we could recognise her. After a brief introduction and bag search by security, we were straight inside the cathedral (literally no queue with Fast track). Lorella’s knowledge was brilliant. She made the place really come alive, pointing out details that we would otherwise have overlooked. The Duomo itself is breathtaking both inside and out. We were guided through the cathedral, recently discovered Roman under croft and up onto the roof tops (via lift up). Lorella left udon the roof top to make our own way down. If you’re thinking of visiting Milan cathedral, don’t hesitate to book a guided tour. You will not be disappointed. (Ours was a private tour so I can’t comment on the group ones).

    This is huge and amazing.
The scale of this cathedral is staggering just walking around it would maybe take 5 - 10 minutes. The detail of the architecture on the outside is jaw dropping and then when you go inside you are equally amazed. I would say it’s in the top handful of religious structures in the world that has this detail and size to it. It’s simply amazing and a must see not just for Milan but for Italy.

    Amazing tour!
We did a small group guided tour with Julia G. She was amazing! So knowledgeable about the cathedral and pointed out some really small details that you'd normally missed. The cathedral is the most amazing thing with 600+ years of history to see. Something for everyone! And the rooftops were really special.

The most mesmerising holiday of the year to be here in Duomo de Milano cathédrale.
No words to describe , it is beautiful experienced , it is a dream and it is spectacular. It is in the most high season of the year and tourists just pouring but even then there are alot of space to do photography . It is pleasant, no bandidos if we think of pick pocketing and such but then again it is expensive in Milan The queue were long but otherwise its smooth.

    Amazing and beutiful
We visited the duomo during our stay in Milan and it is definitely something that you must do. The inside of the church is highly decorated as you would expect and in good condition. For us, the highlight was going to the roof. The views were amazing and you really got a sense of the cathedral and the immense amount of work that it takes to maintain the building. We did this with a tour as it was easier to get the tickets and we learned some extra information this way. Be sure your roof access is included and that it is via the elevator.

    Three nights in Milan.
The Duomo in Milan is so majestic. It is worth climbing the 400 odd steps to get on the roof for the views. They are spectacular. Fabulous experience. I would recommend to buy the tickets online it is so much quicker and easier. The square that the Duomo is on is so lively at all times day and night. There is so many people and music, a lovely place to be.

    Spiritual Triumph
Wow - it is hard to believe that such a place actually exists! It is hard to comprehend the faith, work, and perseverance that went into this church over 600 years. Every inch, inside and out, tells an incredible story. Do NOT forget to also get a ticket for the roof to enjoy a view of the city and to see some of the architecture up close. TIP: Get a skip-the-line guided tour in ADVANCE. It is worth every penny.

Amazing, Beautiful, Breathtaking Experience; Must Also Take Rooftop Tour!
Absolutely amazing- a must see from the inside out. You have to take the tour that includes the tour of the roof as that was simply breathtaking. If you go in the evening on a nice day even better for photos and views. Also, it was still warm inside at that time of day so during the afternoon in July would be most uncomfortable.

Take the stairs - it’s not that bad!
A stunning building. Gorgeous rooftops with stunning views. One star removed for the amount of scaffolding, not making it clear where the museum was (which the ticket also included) and too many people on the rooftops at once. Take the stairs to the roof, it’s not that bad really and much quicker than queueing for the lift! It is worth going up though to see the architecture. Inside the church was just as stunning.

Breathtaking and a sight to behold.
Stunning views, gorgeous architecture and really fascinating. From when you approach it for example coming up from the metro station, it’s overwhelmingly beautiful. Make sure you reserve tickets ahead of time to make it easier on yourself and avoid lines.

Archeological tour of the basement was amazing and only rivaled by the spectacular rooftop spires with surprising images everywhere you look.

Amazing visit! We did a guided tour which was great. Cost was (35.00 € + 1.05 €) per person.
Our tour guide was amazing and we had chance to go to top and enjoy Milano skyline.

Worth coming here! You won't be disappointed!

We paid to get the lift to the roof and it was worth doing but very badly organised

We joined a short queue at 12.45pm for a 1pm visit and barely moved for 30 minutes, in baking hot sun with no shelter

After 45 minutes we eventually got in a small lift to the roof

The roof provides a good view of Milan, but you find yourself waiting for young girls to take dozens of photos for Instagram in each section, and the experience takes far too long as it’s single file mostly

You then go down lots of stairs to exit which take you straight into the cathedral and this is quite convenient

Overall worth doing but they need to provide shade for people queuing

Not as great a visit as hoped for.
Tickets are bought from a line round in the side street and roof access time is issued.
The cathedral interior is blocked in part by exit lines, repairs, worshipers and you are sure to miss bits.
The separate museum has very low light and poor signs, however don’t miss an upstairs photograph display which wa great.
We paid for the lift “to the roof”, but it is small and does not go all the way meaning plenty final stairs.
On the roof due to repairs and screening one side of views was blocked.
My husband had a small fall and it is not a great roof for young or old. Long line to descend and no lift available you go down tricky little stair.
I don’t recommend the roof apart from perhaps catching a breeze!

Catch the Hop-on Hop-off bus tours right in front of the Duomo. One ticket that lasts for 24 hours can give you four different tours of the city (some overlapping). Of course, you can get off and on when something catches your eye, but you may want to stay on and visit certain places later--and some sites require advance planning.

The Cathedral was stunning inside and out! Our hotel was about a block away, so we got to enjoy the outside from several vantage points. Hearing the stories from our guide on the inside, it was nice to relate to those stories as we looked at the windows from the outside. It is strategically located so it is a focal point from the magnificent shopping area and to restaurants. Don’t miss it if you are in Milan and do take time to explore all that is located around it. We ate just a few feet from it.

One of the most amazing and beautiful churches I've seen. I always thought Notre Dame in Paris was beautiful, but the Duomo di Milano is incredibly beautiful. Stained Glass windows surround the church. Amazing architecture. Make certain to get a guide because we learned so much about the building of the cathedral.

Top attraction in Milan! Two types of tickets: stairs combo 20€ and lift combo 25€ both with access to the rooftop and the Duomo. But one taking the stairs till the rooftop and the other going by elevator getting down on stairs.
Amazing view from the top and a wonderful chance to take photos.
The Duomo was breathtaking!

Even though we got rained on up at the top we still enjoyed it. It is massive but with so much fine detail it makes it so impressive. Bonus we got to hear the organ play inside which was fabulous.
