- Eleanor R14 contributionsThe basilica is beautiful. It has amazing architecture and works of art. The lighting at the altar is one of a kind. We also attended the Aura in the evening which is a light and sound show inside. I would highly recommend it. Visiting this church is a don't miss activity. Quiet in the morning but really gets busier from late afternoon. Worth it to stroll the streets and try the huge variety of restaurants. Although the inside is a bit austere, its monumental scale is still very impressive. I was fortunate to hear a terrific concert on the basilica organ while I was there.
The oratory has an interesting history, and there are several sacred places related to its founder, St. Andre Bessette, including his tomb, the original chapel, and the beautiful votive chapel. There is also a museum, but it's only open until 4:30 PM. The market is hopping in the summer with wi detail things for all five senses. My children were given lots of free samples from the bakeries and the shopkeepers in the market. Highlights were the maple syrup stand in the middle of the market, lunch from Le Coin Sante, crepes from the creative and the unbelievable cannoli from St. Martin’s Pâtisserie. Just watch out in St. Martin’s: they sometimes overcharge tourists so be sure to check your receipt. I focused on their international and Canadian collections. - sanju_222323New Jersey16,260 contributionsVieux-Montreal is where the city began, and its old buildings and cobblestone streets make it the most picturesque neighborhood in the city. This is where you'll also find the popular waterfront promenade along the Vieux-Port (Old Port).
As you wander around Old Montreal, you'll most likely end up in the lively area by the Saint Lawrence River known as the Old Port (Vieux-Port). Here, you'll find plenty of things to do, from riding the giant Ferris wheel or climbing the famous clock tower, right through to screaming down a zipline that descends from dizzying heights across open stretches of water.
If exhausted, grab a coffee and sit on one of the sunny patios and just soak up the scene.
In the summer, boat tours leave from the docks here. If you really want to soak up the sun, there is even a man-made beach at the base of the clocktower with views back to the city or out over the river.

The museum uses technology to create a unque experience for visitors. We spent about 4 hours before being "museumed" out. In recent years, the city has made substantial improvements to this street and several others. Sections of Rue Saint-Paul are pedestrian-only areas and during the day, this area is packed with tourists.
history buff, it's for you- Montreal was founded in 1642 as the settlement of Fort Ville-Marie, an early French settlement in the region. The very first street was created near a route that bordered a fort that once stood in the city. The street was created by François Dollier de Casson and was named for Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve, the city's devout founder. In fact, the city’s founder later established a home on the street in 1650.
In 1672, Saint Paul Street was paved with cobblestones, a look that the majority of the street still maintains today.
Coming to life: If you have visited Montreal, you’ve likely spent time on Saint Paul Street. Today, the street maintains much of its historic look with new appeal. I found it quite interesting finding our way through the network of passage ways, although it is definitely not constructed to be a direct route from one end to the other. More likely it was designed to give direct routes between metro stations and the close surrounding buildings. During the journey we came across metro stations, food courts, art installations, wandered into a hotel reception and ended up walking into a vestibule of an office tower. Like other reviews have mentioned, signage and maps are not helpful in navigating the Underground City. We had to ask for directions a few times, and every time locals would always advise us to get the metro, I suppose to them walking is a waste of time. Even when we asked someone who worked in a metro station for directions they told us it was not possible to pass all the way through to Complexe Desjardins! Ignore the locals advice unless they can direct you. Luckily the porter at the hotel we walked into was helpful, and a security guard for one of the companies also helped.
