Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

My husband absolutely wanted to see guitars built by various craftsmen through the ages and he was not disappointed. Admission for seniors 65+ is 4.5 Euros. Plus, they give you a free audio guide. There were three temporary and interesting exhibits in addition to the permanent collection. We arrived at 16h00 on a Thursday and were basically the only people visiting at that time but we were told that it was busy that morning with a school group. Thursday is also the only day of the week that this museum is open until 21h00.

This place is not in any tourist locations but is within a music school. The admission price is very small - and even free from 6 to 9 on their late night on Thursday.
The museum is well organized and structured - with an amazing amount of displays .... everything from modern instruments to very old relics. You can wander around at your own pace - stay as long as you want.
We were lucky enough to sit in on a practice session with a pianist and localist being coached by a professor.

A terrific springboard for music making, across hundreds of instruments, it’s a superb collection.
From around the world musical sounds makers are displayed in a grand setting. Strings, keyboards, percussion and brass are all represented.
Also here are musical reproduction items including an Orpheus Player plus an Ampex Reel-to-Reel tape recorder.

I give this a solid 5 stars for the collection. The museum contains extraordinary instruments from around the world and through the ages. As a brass player, I was fascinated by the evolution of the various instruments – the early coronet which was like a flute with a mouthpiece, through development of rotary and plunger valves. 12th century trombones. The emergence of the saxophone which was originally a double reed instrument like an oboe. And so on. Much of interest for other types of instruments as well – keyboards, percussion, a harpsichord likely played by Bach, the violin family, guitars (an amazing collection of Spanish Guitars), and many bizarre instruments that never made it to modern times.
I give this museum 3 to 4 stars for structure, organization and teaching content. The audioguide runs on your phone, and I had some difficulty getting connected to their Wifi since I was an international number, but I was able to run it on my own roaming data. There aren’t many audio segments anyhow, and they’re more trivia than serious education. And the organization of the museum is confusing at times – it would have been much better (in my opinion) to organize chronologically, showing the parallel development around the world of instruments, and the development of various phonic/polyphonic musical approaches, styles and physical mechanisms that eventually evolved into modern “Western Music” – while also putting more emphasis on non-Western as well. It’s all there on display but could have been better communicated.
The museum is a little out of the way from the rest of mainstream Barcelona sights, but well worth the effort. A little creativity (walking to the museum) took us through the lovely Cuitadella Parc and past the Arc de Triomf on the way up, and around the La Sagrada Familia and down L’Eixample neighborhood on the way back.

Incredible collection of instruments, many of which you will not find anywhere else. Can easily allow 90 minutes to move through the large space. Displays are very well set up. Admission is free with the Barcelona Card. Otherwise, it is 6 Euro entrance fee and well worth it.

This place is good for spending an easy hour on a Sunday. The place has a great variety of music instruments and you can hear them playing as you move along the museum path. At the end you have some instruments you can play with. Fun experience for kids and the kids in hearts.

While not a bad place it can be boring unless you are really into musical instruments. I guess for me, while I like music I found the overall experience a bit boring and sped through it. Now I do not want to detract from it being a lovely museum which is pleasantly laid out and does host a large collection of instruments but as said, unless you like seeing various instruments it's not an ideal cup of tea. And for a music museum it was awfully quiet! Maybe some more atmosphere would have made it better. It is off the usual tourist track so no crowds which is a pleasure in itself.

Off the beaten path in Barcelona, this is definitely worth a visit if you have any interest in music. The instruments were beautiful and the setting was thoughtful. It's a great quiet place for a visit since it seems that not too many people know about it.

We enjoyed this museum very much. It was nice, compact, interesting and well-presented. Our 9 year old enjoyed the room where one can touch instruments (classical guitar, electric guitar, cello, and some basic organ).
