Address
Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

A good place to remember Spain's history and the consequences of crime. Although this prison also held people who refused to kill others in the name of the fatherland. Some were imprisoned for conscience reasons

Unfortunately I was unable to enter. It is only possible to enter on Fridays and during the weekend.
From the outside it looked very impressive. I also liked the street art on the prison walls. It gave it a bit of a Berlin Wall vibe. It seems they created some temporary schools and want to create housing here. I hope some parts stay authentic, because it seems like the perfect place to tell something about the darker history of Catalunya. A history that is hardly talked about in other museums.

Interesting prison with dark past of political executions. Worthwhile if you are interested in Civil War era history. But bring your Google translate app because the interpretative signs are not in English and staff was not able to help.

I was specially invited by a colleague who gave my students and I a personalized tour of this former prison. The city is in the process of deciding what to do with this place, whether to use it for housing, as a greenway or as a museum or some combination of all three. I think they should strongly consider making it a tourist attraction ala Alcatraz and Eastern Penitentiary in the US. While now it is really just an empty prison, it is also a time capsule of 20th Century Spanish/Catalunyan history and it should be preserved and enhanced, but it needs considerable investment for that to happen. But I think they will find it worth the effort and expense.

This prision counts with 113 years, now is closed, but it was running until las year. It's a mysterious and dark place. Here the anarchist Puig Antich was murderes, so it's a sad place. Also when you go in the atmosphere is sad. But it deserves a visit to understand what is a prison.

The prison La Modelo was a visit to experience the sensation of living behind bars. There are no guided tours, so if you want to know anything about it you should read up about it before you go. At present its only open Friday pm and all day Saturday.
You can see the old barbers, library, some of the cells, visitors room with glass partition to talk to your visitor, patio for exercise and the control hub.

Visit to the Model, very interesting and shocking. Especially since it closed in 2010...not so long ago.
We were without Guide, and it took a little more than 30 min.

Open on weekends. Definitely worth a visit and it's free. Probably even better with a GUIDE. Not too far from the city center.
