The area
Neighbourhood: Poblenou
The futuristic Agbar Tower stands out from Barcelona's skyline in Poblenou. It is no coincidence then that this area of town is the newly crowned technological park of the city, its own mini Silicon Valley containing a tech incubator (Barcelona Activa) as well as a host of local and international high tech companies. To accommodate the onrush of new residents and workers, the area of Poblenou has seen a surge of activity in new high-rise residential buildings and two top-notch shopping centres catering to everyone's need. The ambiance of this area is calmer than the city center and the beautifully relaxing Bogatell Beach, popular with locals, is just a handful of blocks away.

It’s a powerful tribute to the Barcelona born doctor, surgeon, researcher and Catalan activist.

After a distinguished tenure as Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Oxford University he returned to Catalonia in 1966.

Created by Josep Ricart the monument was inaugurated in 1978. A figure in stone with head bowed is in the front. This may symbolise the science of medicine welcoming an ill patient to be treated.

At the rear is a sequence of smaller figures in metal, that bear similarity to religious sculptures in some Catalan Churches.

Above these are large fingers in stone seeming to protrude from the front.

This monument stands in tribute to Josep Trueta i Raspall, a Spanish doctor and Catalan nationalist who was exiled to United Kingdom during the Spanish Civil War. The monument is on the Rambla del Pobleno, just opposite the Bankia building on Rambla del Poblenou, 116.

The monument features, a set of human and gigantic hands supporting a stylized human form that appears to be near death. On the rear of the monument is a bust of the doctor in relief with his inscribed name.

Only worth seeking out if you're on the Rambla del Poblenou.
