Glu wein and brats. then merchants thrown in. but it was a great time and experience. we also got to see the Krampus parade. that was a hoot. so glad we got to do this. must go early in the day for shopping, mid day for grabbing a glu wein and a brat, and then evening for just looking at lights and the wein and beer. Dont try and shop at night. especially on any weekend night. too crowded.

There are a lot of small shops where you can buy items for your Christmas tree. There is also a variety of food, hot drinks available.

Munchner Christkindlmarkt is the annual Christmas Market and festival held in and around Marienplatz in the Old Town of Munich. This is a large open market being held this year from 27th of November until the 24th of December.

In addition to normal sightseeing at Marienplatz, at this time of year you can enjoy a very large Christmas tree setup just in front of Neue Rathaus and lots of Christmas stalls selling traditional holiday foods, gluhwein (mulled wine) as well as seasonal decorations, ornaments and other Christmas related items. It was very festive and a nice way to spend an hour or so while sightseeing in the area.

Tip: We passed by several times during our recent visit to Munich, finding the market less crowded during the day, it could be rather crowded after dark.

Note that the Christkindlmarkt extends beyond Marienplatz to the west along Kaufingerstraße for several blocks. Similarly the market continues southwest along Rosenstraße to Rindermarkt square where there is a giant and impressive Christmas pyramid and then onward along Sendlingerstraße.

Overall, we liked the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt more during this particular trip to Germany but found the markets here in Munich rather enjoyable as well. Would gladly return to Munich in the future to enjoy the holiday market scene here again.
