In November 2002 Fujimae-higata was designated a Wildlife Protection Area by Japan's Ministry of the Environment. This action was taken to protect the tens of thousands of migratory birds (many of them endangered species) that stop at the Fujimae-higata tidal flats on a regular basis for food, water and rest. Over the last several years 172 species of birds have been seen in the Fujimae-higata area. The Inae Visitor Center, which lies just above the tidal flats, is the best place for observing Fujimae-higata's magnificent bird life. The Center has two floors, and both of them have telescopes for observing birds on the tidal flats below. In addition, there are books, pamphlets and other material to help visitors identify the birds they are looking at. The Center also has staff members who are always very happy to help visitors identify birds and learn about tidal flat ecology. The Inae Visitor Center is very easy to reach by public transportation. From Nagoya station just take the train (on the Aonami Line) to Noseki Station. From there it is only a 10 minute walk.

Located where the mouths of the Shonai River, Shinkawa River, and Nikko River join, this tidal flat is registered under the Ramsar Convention. Inaei Park, about a five-minute walk from Noseki Station on the Aonami Line, is the Wild Bird Observation Center (free admission), where you can use the telescopes installed there to observe the wild birds that fly to the tidal flat. The park also has the Inaei Visitor Center (free admission), which introduces the tidal flat environment and creatures.
