Decided to try out Orca on a sisters vacation to Nagoya. Nighclubs in the U.S. usually aren't my thing, why would you go pay a cover to be in a deafeningly loud environment, pay $20 per drink, and be felt up by random strangers? However, since it was only a few days before my sister's birthday, we decided to try out Orca on a Saturday in September. Their website is in Japanese, but with a limited Japanese vocabulary we could understand GIRLS - FREE ENTRY, and FREE UNLIMITED DRINKS UNTIL 8PM and that sounded much more enticing than pre-gaming with Chu-Hi's from a convenience store. So we decided to give it a try and we were very impressed.

Located in the Don Quixote building, a few hundred yards away from Oasis 21, it was a bit difficult to get up to the club because only one of the elevators in the whole building goes up there. They do check ID, your passport will work so don't forget it. The bouncer noticed it was only a few days before my sister's birthday, and he gave her a light-up bracelet. Later when we got to the club, we realized that this bracelet indicated to the staff that she was to receive free champagne and the sparkler treatment. At this point, the amount we have spent at the club is still at 0yen, and it gets better.

So the free drinks lasted only for about an hour since it took us awhile to get there, but they have a designated free drink menu and while most of it was watered-down fruity sho-chu cocktails, their Moscow mules each had a full shot of vodka in it, which after 4 plus champagne was enough to put this girl with Irish-drinking roots in a happy place. Also, they had free Beard Papa's cream puffs for us early birds. Still amount spent: 0yen.

There were a fair amount of foreigners, and they had a lot of foreign staff members. My sister forgot we were in Japan for a sec and just asked for things in English, which everyone understood. The staff members were very friendly (especially Rafael, he's from Brazil but speaks perfect English), and gave us a lot of good recommendations on places to eat in Nagoya. We ended up staying much longer than planned, it was so much fun. When we decided to order more drinks, it was only 600yen per drink for well, and 900yen for premium Japanese whiskey, and since it's Japan and you don't have tip and tax is included in the price, it was a bargain compared to $20 a drink at clubs here in the US. Hopefully they don't catch on and charge more!

Other things - there were 3 main rooms, the top 20 DJ in the main room which opened first, then the hip-hop room an hour later, and then the EDM room an hour after that. I think the VIP people had their own room, but we didn't have VIP so I can't comment on it. Age range for Japanese was only up to 40 or so, but I don't think there was an age limit for foreigners! There were some foreigners who were clearly older than my parents who stopped in, and seemed to enjoy the people-watching. Smoking is allowed, there's even a cigarette promo girl giving out free tobacco goodies, now that's something that's only in Asia! But the smoke wasn't overwhelming as it is in pachinko parlors, perhaps the younger Japanese are getting the message that it's not good for your health. The bathrooms are immaculate and they don't have the annoying bathroom attendant trying to give you a paper towel for a tip!

I am aware that we could have such a positive experience mainly because we are girls, and it may be different for a guy. Also, as it becomes prime time for the club, they increase the cover charge to get in, for both men and women. You should check the website and plan ahead. They have different cover fees for men, but if it's a couple of girls I would highly recommend it, ESPECIALLY if it's in the month of someone's birthday, ESPECIALLY if you can come in early for a few FREE drinks. We spent less than 3000yen on several drinks (mainly Nikka premium whiskey), and we had so much more in our pockets afterwards to splurge on a local Izakaya (Bar Ton, from Rafael's recommendation, great place!). We had such a good time and we will definitely check out their sister club location GIRAFFE when we visit Osaka.
