This retired Antarctic scientific ship is now a living exhibit of life at sea in an icebreaker. It felt like the crew had just left for a while and even had its helicopter on the bow deck “ready for take off”. While down in the port area, this is a definite must for a visit.

Ranked #25 on Trip Advisor, the Antarctic Research Ship "Fuji" was not particularly high up on my list of 'Things to see in Nagoya' either, prior to visiting. However, having made the relatively long trek by subway to the terminus station in the Port of Nagoya (Nagoyoko), I would encourage other people to make the trip as it deserves to be a lot higher in the rankings.
Entering the vessel at the 1F Deck level, there is an initial 'Prologue Exhibit' then the Guide Route takes you past the Mess, Galley, various Offices and Bunkrooms before descending to the B1F Deck level which contains the Infirmary, Dentist and Barber's Shop. The various rooms replicate scenes onboard the vessel with lifelike mannequins. From B1F Deck level the Guide Route takes you up 2 flights to the 2F Deck level which houses a complete Sea King helicopter on the Flight Deck and the 'Antarctic Museum' in the former hangar. Up a further flight takes you to the Bridge on the 3F Deck level before exiting the vessel from the 2F Deck level.
Overall, interesting and informative and a little bit different. Well worth the trek on the subway, especially if you take the adjacent attractions of the Public Aquarium, Ferris Wheel, Maritime Museum and the (unmissable) Nagoya Port Building.

We went on this because of the combined ticket that we purchased at the aquarium. We would not have thought to visit if not for the combined ticket. But actually it is well worth it. We learnt about life on the marine and what this particular vesserl had gone through and the number of trips it has done, the living standard etc. Well worth visiting

Fuji was a JMSDF ice-breaker in service, before retiring as a museum ship. The interior is well-maintained, containing displays of everyday lift aboard a ship of its type.

There is a web-based tour-guide which explains what you are seeing in various languages. You can even visit the bridge and flight-deck, complete with a Sea King naval helicopter.

This attraction was a lot of fun and well worth the price.

If you enjoy learning about nautical history, ship engineering, scientific exploration, or just want to spend an easy afternoon waterside I’d recommend a visit to the “Fuji” Antarctic Museum at the Port of Nagoya. If you are staying in downtown Nagoya, you can use the subway system and travel to the end of the Meiko Line to the Nagoyako (Nagoya Port) station terminus. Exiting the subway, you have an easy five minute walk south to the Fuji. You can purchase your admission tickets to the Fuji at a automated dispensing machine in the small metallic domed structure near the ships entrance gangway. Once aboard you will be transported back in time to the 1960s when this ship carried out numerous Antarctic research missions for Japan. The ship’s interior spaces on display are very well maintained and give the visitor a glimpse at daily life aboard a research ice breaker ship. The helicopter garage has been transformed into an area detailing the many research missions carried out by the Fuji during her voyages to the Antarctic. A majority of the text on the descriptive placards contains only Japanese text, with limited English translations and explanations. If you have more time to spend here than I did, you could download a smartphone app to learn more. The self-guided tour will take about 60-90 minutes. Afterwards, you can enjoy the outdoors and walk along the landscaped port esplanades or make your way over to the adjacent Nagoya City Aquarium.

It is full of explanations (including downloadable via mobile phones) so it is very useful to add knowledge about the exploration in the south pole. Easy to reach from station. Cost is quite cheap, there is also a package with Nagoya maritime museum.

Next to the aquarium but not very interesting. You can walk through the ship but that's it. I'd prefer the animals.

Is nothing more than a huge civil ship where you can also explore inside.

The use it to explore South Pole and also with small tank and huge propeller parked in front of the boat

I love this, right up my street. Historical and Mechanical!
Antarctic survey ship, no longer used, now a great museum. Well worth a look. I went straight after visiting the nearby aquarium - going to both makes a very busy, enjoyable day

Located at the Nagoya port a former antarctic exploration vessel is turned in to a museum. Impressive was the helicopter on the rear deck. Also the bridge, the man's quarters, the medic room and the radio room gave a good impression of what was going on.
