The temple is located in Osu, one of Nagoya's most popular shopping districts. The temple is located on the west side of the Osu district and at the edge of the shopping arcade, so the bustle of the shopping arcade does not echo so much in the temple precincts. Even so, many visitors to the shopping district stop by the temple as worshippers. The mundane atmosphere and the solemn vermilion of the buildings on the temple precincts blend together, but there is no sense of dissonance; in fact, the temple has been deeply loved by the common people for a long time.
The temple precincts are not that large, and it does not take more than 30 minutes to simply walk around the temple. Since many visitors come to the temple both on weekdays and holidays, you may never find the temple precincts quiet and deserted, even if there are no festivals. While the temple has become a tourist attraction, it's also home to many cultural assets, almost all of which are not open to the public, so visitors should not expect anything special from this temple (except for festivals). It would be better to visit the temple quietly, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to worship here.
Since the only access to the main hall is by stairs, there is also a place on the first floor of the main building for those with disabilities, such as wheelchairs, to worship.Written April 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Interesting temple and gardens. You have to wak to the back of the garden to see the Buddha. Because of the vegetation and trees it is possible to miss it.Written August 15, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Try little bit each as one portion is small and cheap!Written November 3, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas CNagoya, Japan97 contributionsThis shrine is built on top of a hill that used to be the site of Suemori Castle. This castle was built by the damiyo (lord) Oda Nobuhide in 1548. In 1552 Nobuhide died and the castle was taken over by his third son, Nobuyuki. The castle was abandoned around 1559. The Shiroyama Hachimangu Shrine, that is found today on the site of the castle, is a picturesque and peaceful spot that is the site of some fascinating ceremonial activity. For example, in January the Dondo Yaki ceremony is held at the shrine. During this ceremony New Year's "decorations" and "talismans," (kodamatsu, shimeniwa, hamaya, omumori, etc.) are offered back to the gods by burning them in a "sacred" fire. The shinto priests (bo'osan) at the shrine are nice and helpful. The information pamphlets are all in Japanese, but anyone wanting more information about the shrine can find it on the internet or in a library. The shine is usually very crowded during the New Year holiday period. At other times though there are usually not so many visitors at Shiroyama Hachimangu.Written December 29, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael NNagoya, Japan869 contributionsJust another small Shinto shrine. Takes about 10 minutes to see everything. If this is not your first Shinto shrine, then you know what this is about.

Our first impression was it looked like a restaurant (from the main entrance) or clubhouse because it is surrounded by restaurants, eateries and retail shops.
It is bright and LED display panels, and also wide multimedia screens. And outside on the side is a display of a big white dragon statue and looks nice. It changed our impression and views that traditional temple should look like. Quite interesting and forward thinking we would say!Written February 28, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a Buddhist temple located next to Shinto Shrine (basically same grounds, just divided by a fence). Some basic explanation about history of the place in English. You can view the interiour with Bodhisatvas and other decoration. Nothing much else to say. - Kunal CToronto, Canada307 contributionsThis temple is set in a beautifully landscaped garden with a mountain backdrop. You couldn't ask for anything more scenic. Take some time out to see the temple in its entirety. It does evoke a sense of serenity. Definitely one of the better pit stops in Nagoya, which otherwise I felt had very little to offer.Written April 17, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lnuge318Wagga Wagga, Australia172 contributionsYou don't think of this or at least I didn't, that these would be dotted amongst the community. It's a very quaint shrine to service the local community. Not something you'd travel to see but our air BnB was close so we went in. If you are close by pay a visit.Written April 11, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
