A large modern onsen with many indoor and outdoor baths, and saunas with varying temperature waters and different water depths. Try the 90 cm deep waterjet bath which is excellent for back and front massages.

As an Onsen enthusiast, I have a soft spot for baths with milky waters. But for this onsen, I particularly like the fragrant and medicinal baths which were opposite a resting platform where one can take short breaks in-between dips :p.

Besides the resting platform is a bath with the hottest temperature water (about 42 degrees centigrade). According to a ryokan owner, this temperature water is ideal especially in a rotenburo. :p

I have a particular fondness for outdoor baths (rotenburos). There were two types of outdoor stone baths - a hot stone bath and a stone bath with running warm water. For the hot stone bath, a bathrobe is provided for an extra fee. The experience - just imagine resting on a piece of hot stone. That's all there is to it!

My personal preference is the stone bath with running hot water. The experience - a cacoon of warm water trickling to lull you to sleep. It is also excellent for meditation. A must try!

But if a meditative rest is not your cup of tea, venture into another rotenburo with a large television set to enjoy the broadcast for the day.

Other amenities like hair dryers, coin lockers (the ¥100 deposit is refundable) to store your personal stuff while you take a meal or rest breaks.

Lunch special is at ¥690 from 11:00 - 14:00 hours. There is a good selection of dishes that is value for money. As we were not able to read Japanese, we referred to the menu and sought help from the servers. They were excellent!

We spend the the whole day at the onsen. Our schedule for the day: arrived at around 10 am, bought 2 bath tickets @ ¥850 each, tried out the different baths in the Onsen, and break for lunch. After lunch, rest in the lounge area, have another go in the Onsen, and break for dinner. After dinner, either rest in the lounge area or Sayonara! (^.^)

Psst... To get maximum benefit from the onsen water, only dry yourself after soaking in the hotspring water.

The spa is one of the popular local establishments with many local Japanese. The location is about 15 minutes from Nagoya train station by taxi. There is an outdoor area with TV and bath barrels for individuals outside. It would be nice to have more sitting areas inside the men sauna area. Extra costs for entering the coed steam room and reading room close to the entrance. Food and drinks are available within the spa.

Whether willing to take on a new experience or have another relaxation option, Japanese style, head off to Utopia Takara (Yutopia Takara) . Take the JR line train from Nagoya main hub & get off about 12 minutes later at Kasadera station. I's a short 10 minute-walk from the pedestrian bridge/ overpass, in the area left of the sports arena. Look for a mascot seal sign on the building within the Kasadera Washington Hotel grounds. After the entrance, put your shoes inside any of the footwear lockers & then head off to the counter to pay the fee so you'll be handed your kit of towels, lounging clothes, etc. Go further than the restaurant on the first floor until you spot the doors on the right. This signals the segregated areas for male and female guests. Once inside, deposit your clothes in any of the individual lockers and put the key-bracelet in your wrist or ankle as this is the only thing you'll wear to the baths. Everyone else is wearing the birthday suit. Cleanse and bathe yourself before immersing in any of the various pools. Another option is immerse oneself in any of the saunas marked with different temperature/s. One of them is so hot that staying inside will shortly induce sweating. Then, there`s the choice of different baths. There is one with swirling waters which makes it equivalent to having a massage. Aside from the indoor bath areas, there are also several jacuzzis outside, also with varied temperatures and water levels. Some are covered by a gazebos while others will only have the open sky overhead. You can take your pick whether you prefer indoors or outdoors or both. The last step will be to shampoo, soap and rinse oneself before heading off to the area for hair-drying and grooming. The result: one emerges refreshingly clean and invigorated. There are still other options within the building: restaurant, massage, gift shop, games arcade and relaxation facilities. Feeling renewed afterwards, it`s time to take on the world again.
