This is the historic fisherman’s neighbourhood of Barcelona that somehow escaped the gentrification of the Barcelona Sea front for the 1992 Olympics. It is still a maze of narrow streets and although largely still a working-class district, in recent years it has built a reputation for quality sea food restaurants and tapas bars.

One must start with the architectural designs of the buildings in the area. Add in the wide avenues, the hotels, both luxury and otherwise, and the bars and restaurants. It’s a special glimpse into the past that celebrates the building and the people that lived in it. - Steve_of_N21London, UK3,054 contributionsThis one is only a 12 minute walk from the more famous Mercat de La Boqueria on Las Ramblas, yet it is a world away in terms of experience.
Much smaller, but a much more spacious set up internally with all the same type of food stalls you can see in the more famous one, it is considerably less busy and lower cost. It also has the associated cafes and bars around its periphery but because of the extra space to the back of the market the bars and restaurants here have outside sections on the pavement also.

Many narrow streets to explore and a few big squares. Relaxed atmosphere, clean, and excellent service from the nearby Bo Kaap restaurant. The driver who picked us up from the airport upon provided is with plenty of tips for things to see and restaurants to visit.

We perhaps chose the wrong day being a Saturday so crowded lots of children, therefore noisy. On the whole we a mission for particular items but we side tracked and ended up spending hours & buying lots of things well beyond the planned items. Overall we enjoyed it. Some of the old buildings have been turned into restaurants and clubs.
