The five-story Montreal City Hall is the seat of local government in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was designed by architects Henri-Maurice Perrault and Alexander Cowper Hutchison, and built between 1872 and 1878 in the Second Empire style. Montréal City Hall has a more turbulent history than its peaceful façade suggests. The building went up between 1872 and 1878, and survived a severe fire in 1922. And it was from this balcony that French President General de Gaulle uttered his famous “Vive le Québec libre!” (Long live free Québec) during a state visit in 1967. At dusk, when it is lit up, it is absolutely spectacular. Behind the City Hall, lies the Champ-de-Mars. Two lines of stone runs across the surface. This is one of the few spots in present-day Montréal where you can still see physical evidence of the fortified town of yesteryear.

Even though there were boards all round and it didn’t seem we could visit, we could still see what a magnificent building this is.

The City Hall is a huge building and is quite an imposing one too. It was designed and built in the late 19th century. It stands on the high end of the street and is easily seen from a distance. We were unable to go inside as it was closed for renovations during our visit.

Very old fashioned building that looks like it belongs in northern Europe, Belgium or France. There were weddings going on so lots of people around and this reminded me that this is not just an historic building, but also a functional one.

There was renovation and construction going on so we could not get a full view of this old noble building that evokes the Hotel de Ville in Paris. Not quite.

This impressive building in the downtown area has great architecture.
I was told that it lights up at night but a different color each night.

The 18th century built ornate building exemplifies Second Empire architecture design and should be a "must see" site for visitors. It is currently under intensive redecoration and you can only view the elegant building from outside.

A beautiful ,old historic unique building, the City Hall Montreal which was originally built in 18th century.though it was destroyed by fire and so built again in 19 th century is a eye catching building .A castle type view and in the main adjoining market and Place Jacques Cartier is having photo look. though nowdays it is closed due to renovation but still a very elegant structure. worth seeing. its a place for elected officials and city council.

Worth visiting, and somewhere I've revisited many times over the years. This is not a large basilica but has interesting history. Stunningly beautiful, it left me totally speechless.
