Best Hotels in El Born / La Ribera (Barcelona), Spain
El Born / La Ribera Hotels
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

- Kimmen1Alesund, Norway644 contributionsBest part of BarcelonaAs a travel professional I have travelled a lot to BCN over the years, Ut used ti be my fav city, but has gotten overcrowdwd. Therefore I always stay in El Born, to get a taste if the old Barcelona. Wonderful area!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten July 24, 2023
- willow731Inverness, United Kingdom261 contributionsgive it a go...We've never explored this area properly before and although it was nice and I can see how people love it, we still prefer the Gothic area but maybe it's because we know it a lot better. In El Born there was some amazing little shops, loads of great quirky cafes and bars but the few that we stopped at, although they were lovely, there always seemed to be a lot of "characters" hanging around outside. I would definitely recommend a browse though and decide for yourself what your favourite area is.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- Jon LOlathe, Kansas252 contributionsDon't miss el BornEl Born was my favorite area of Barcelona. It has hip stores, art galleries and restaurants, in an older part of the city. I wouldn't recommend against walking down Las Ramblas, but check out el Born and you'll see why it's better.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten March 17, 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California16,992 contributionsCharm, CoffeeOne of my favorite neighborhoods, very old, full of charm, yet very safe and in very good condition. Full of typical restaurants and cafes, so a good place to eat and drink. Good for pedestrians. Come and get lost.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2024
- Expattraveler100Sarasota, Florida5,909 contributionsNot as artsy as I’d hopedWe expected more art shops and galleries. But it’s a nice walk with tight streets and side streets with lovely balconies and architecture. A few places to eat and basically a relaxing stroll for a couple of hours. Finding a bathroom without sitting to eat a meal is a challenge!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,054 contributionsA bit of Old Barcelona well worth exploringEl Born is sandwiched between La Ribera to the north and Barceloneta to the south with Via Laietana as its border with the Gothic district to the west. Our hotel was on Via Laietana so we explored it most days and nights especially as, although it has a reputation for art galleries, pricey boutiques and shoe shops it is also home to several decent small traditional tapas bars and a couple of the cities burgeoning craft beer bars. It’s a maze of narrow roads and interconnecting alley ways opening up to the occasional squares, such as the one that houses the impressive Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar. For me, outside of a couple of quirky art galleries I didn’t really pick up on the expensive shops side, but certainly more the bars and restaurants. For those into craft beer DIECI8 Bar and the fairly recently opened Barna Brew Born are two craft beer bars well worth searching out. And there are several authentic tapas bars which are frequented by the locals and tourists alike. I found it a perfectly safe area to explore both during the day and at night, but like various other areas of Barcelona where tourists congregate pickpockets and scammers work here. So just have your wits about you and your possessions tucked away and you will be fine. The El Born district technically stretches east far enough to include the Parc de la Ciutadella which is a fantastic green space and a pleasant area to stroll when the sun is out for a contrast to the narrow streets of the rest of the El Born district.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2024

- Eixample HotelsPassing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.Read more
