London, England
The Melia Barcelona is Melia's flagship hotel in Barcelona. On the map, it is close to everything, but in reality, you need to travel a good distance on the Metro and/or taxi to get anywhere.

The hotel is a huge modern building, and rather than going for extra-special touches which make a five star hotel special, they have gone on an all out offensive to show you it is actually worth five stars. There is no elegance, nothing is understated; everything is big, bold and brash. And that is the approach they have taken throughout the hotel. Concierge is reasonable, but the rest of the management is very poor.

The rooms are very large and very clean. Everything is run super-professionally. Twin sinks in the bathrooms, huge beds, well-appointed rooms, but very very sterile, not romantic at all and big bold statements, like big and brash five star motifs over the beds.

The bar and restaurant staff are good. The staff made us club sandwiches very late one night after everything had closed for the night. Breakfast is poor, and tapas bars around aren't great either - you need to walk for 10-15 minutes for better dining places. When we were checking out, the lady who dealt with us was very rude and checked our rate three times and kept us waiting for 10 minutes while she checked it again, despite our assurances and booking confirmation from expedia. She even suggested we could have produced the booking confirmation ourselves...though she could not explain why it was on their computer system. And then, she did not apologise and just ignored us and kept silent while processing our payment.

The hotel is also on a street where there are many prostitutes late at night, and they do harrass you quite a bit when you are trying to walk back to the hotel in peace in the evening (not even that late on).

If you want a big brash hotel, go for it, especially at a cheap rate, otherwise, think twice.

Melia Barcelona is perfectly located close to Av Diagonal which is the location for all major business of Barcelona. Thus giving business travellers an edge to stay close to their business requirements. The area is nice, clean and perfect. Its one of the safest areas of Barcelona. Restuarant is nice, elegant to have perfect food requirements of clients. Hotel staff is very courteous and understands good amount of English. Lift is fabulous and fast. Night life in this area is ok. Infact a night club is just nearby to hotel. Tourist area of Ramblas is far away and takes about 10 mins drive. Rooms are of medium size and is suitable for max 2 passengers in each room. If the rooms are on higher floor, you can get amazing views of the city. Costwise, the hotel is best suited for business and leisure travellers. Overall, the hotel is nice to stay and spend about 2-3 days.

I had previously read a few of the reviews; most were spot on. Of course, I have a few comments of my own to add!

CAB FARE to hotel (from BCN airport): € 35 (supplement, etc). We arrived at 11:45 am on a weekday. We each had 2 pieces of luggage (1 large, 1 carry-on). If we had less luggage, I would have liked to save € by taking the bus to the city centre, then grabbing a cab from there. Seems that other people did that. Oh, and the day we arrived, looked like possible rain. Okay, we HAD TO suck it up and pay extra. Aren’t we on vacation, after all??

LOCATION: pretty good. Someone mentioned a bus stop near the hotel? We never took a bus. We always walked 5 minutes (about 6-8 blocks) to the nearest metro (Hospital Clinic, Blue line #5). Plenty of great places (cafes, shops, etc) to eat in (if you can stomach all the cigarette smoking) or to take out (“para llevar”), as we did once with a bottle of wine. We enjoyed a nice little picnic in our room!

STAFF: Everyone at the front desk spoke English. And was the perfect blend of consummate professional and friendliness. Particular kudos to Ignacio (aka Nacho – he is a thin bald man who looked like the actor who played the owner of Melville’s Bar on the 90’s tv show “Cheers”), Daniel (tall dude with funky glasses), and Josef (bellhop). The Piano Bar’s bartender (we never go this name) is also very sweet and he always remembered what we had ordered the night before!

ELEVATOR: There were four. I have no idea what an earlier reviewer was talking about. (Maybe she didn’t have a bellhop explain it to her?) Trust me – have the bellhop “assist” you with your bags, even if you can bring it up yourself. It is worth it. He will explain the elevators to you and show you all the many features of your room. The main level where you come in is “0” floor (ground level), and the restaurants are on the sub-level (-1). Maybe that reviewer did not read/see the signs on each floor written in three languages explaining how to use the elevator? To her credit, maybe the elevator sign was NOT THERE during her visit.

TELEVISION: Unless you speak Spanish or German (like Madrid, is there a large German population??), you are going to hate the tv here. Only CNN, BCC and DW-TV (sometimes in English, sometimes in German). Bring a dvd player or laptop and upload (or bring) a few movies to watch if you spend any time in your room.

ADAPTER PLUGS: We had our own, but I think the hotel will provide them should you need any. According to my email to them the week before, the hotel supposedly has them. We never asked so I cannot confirm this.

INTERNET: There is no area to get free wiFi internet service here. (We were crushed!) But, the hotel’s internet service was a little expensive (€ 8 for 24 hours). You may be better off going to any of the internet cafes throughout the city. Many of them serve food (or coffee, at the very least) so you can kind of kill two birds with one stone there. We ate the cost, so we could get the convenience of doing internet service within our room. Bear in mind you will have a deposit “cost” of € 10 for the cable line, that is refunded ONLY WHEN you return the cable to the front desk. We had a problem with our internet cable… first the internet worked, then when we returned from a few hours of sight seeing, it stopped working. Heriberto (the technician) spoke virtually no English, but was nice and with my broken Spanish, we figured out our cable was “bad”. He was particularly kind and very helpful.

GYM/ATHLETIC FACILITY: Located on floor “1”. You can also walk up a small flight of stairs on the ground floor (to the right of the elevators). Using the athletic facility is free. We never did. Not sure whether there was a charge/fee to use the Jacuzzi. The water seemed to be one degree above lukewarm, at best. Hmmm, pretty happy I did not bring a swimsuit in order to verify the temperature!

BREAKFAST: SPECTACULAR. I greatly enjoyed my Madrid breakfast (see my review). But this hotel blows that away. Pretty hard! There’s a hot bar, including a ton of sausages, a sautéed wild mushroom, baked beans, paella (odd, but who cares?!!), and… an omelette station (I am not kidding). A middle island “salad” bar consisted of: various platters of cut fruit (including this really tasty fruit indigenous to Colombia called pintilla, looks like citrus with black seeds), whole fruit (apples, oranges, etc), champagne (theirs is called cava), 2-3 types of fruit juices, 2 types of water (gas/regular), ice, cereals (we didn’t have any), coffee/tea, olives, hot peppers, corn, chopped tomatoes, smoked salmon, sushi (sometimes), various local cheeses, salami, chorizo, ham, and a few other things. Oh, it’s not that I couldn’t ask, but my dictionary was so bad that when they answered, I’d

METRO (subway system): Very easy to use. Pretty safe. If you are there for 3 days or more, highly recommend the 10-trip bonos (bonus) for € 6,90. Unlike Madrid, here two people CAN SHARE the same card!! Generally, you will never have to wait more than 3-4 minutes for the next subway. The subway trains are generally quick. Sometimes, you will need to do a lot of walking within the subway system just to transfer, so if you have difficulties walking up stairs, you need to know this. Generally, the escalators go in the upward direction, but you need to be able to walk down stairs.

Few restaurants worth mentioning (alphabetical order)-
ANTIAQUINO – this is an upscale place.
CERVECERIA CATALUNA – OMG… a local place, about a 20 minute walk from the hotel, near the Diagonal section of town (corner of Rbla. Catalunya and Mallorca).
LA BOTIGA – trendy-looking but decent prices and portions! It’s very close to the hotel (Av. Josef Tarradelles, near the Starbucks)
The detailed reviews are in the Tip Section that follows!

GENERAL TIP on RESTAURANTS: bread & butter is additional in Europe. I know, I know, but that’s what it is. If you don’t want the additional charge, you must SAY SO when you order (“no pan” or “sin pan” will suffice), or REFUSE IT if they bring it to your table before you even order.
Also, they push ordering the bottles water in Barcelona BIG TIME. The locals tell me NOBODY there drinks the tap water. In fact, many restaurants will flat out REFUSE to serve tap water to you. On Day 2, I finally stopped trying and gave in but I would order the smallest bottled water (sin gas – no bubbles!) possible.
WINES: Generally, practically anything local (made in Spain/Barcelona/Catalunya) is really decent in restaurants. If you dine at a local place, you can get a nice bottle of wine for € 6-7. No joke! Often, if you cannot drink the entire bottle, if you only want a glass or small bottle (half-size? Similar to a large bottle of beer in size), the prices are also not bad. We’ve had a glass of house wine for €1,80 and I’ve seen a small bottle (mini-bottle, if you will) for €3,50 - €4.

BEFORE YOU GO: Helpful to bring a small Spanish dictionary or any of the gamut of little books put out by any of the travel or language people. This is ESPECIALLY important if, like us, you enjoy going off the beaten path. Most people in the working world do not speak very much English other than “yes”, “no” or “Sorry”. I am not making any statements or putting any culture down; it is based on my own travel observation & experience. It was very humbling to conjure up my high school Spanish irregular verbs… but I think the majority of people seem appreciative if you genuinely try!

Also, call up your credit card companies. Two reasons for this: first, you will find out what the fee is per transaction (yes, it was a surprise to me but using your charge card outside the US, the credit card companies tack on an additional fee to the purchase price!). VISA/MC is usually 1%, whereas AmEx is 2%. But you will want to confirm with them. Secondly, you want to tell them that you will be in Spain/Europe. The last thing you want to do is to be in a posh store and your credit card company thinks you aren’t you (fraud alert), and you have to provide the store additional identification [we almost never took our passports with us (we were mugged in Rome 3 years ago – learned our mistake then! Lovely US Embassy in Rome!!), except on travel days]. Spare yourself the hassle.

BEST ADVICE I LEARNED BY ACCIDENT: Chat up your bellhop. Overtip him by about half of €1 (or € 0,50). Trust me, it was worth it. Every time we saw him (Josef) he was very chatty and always had advice for us!

Also, if your hotel is part of a chain (like this), you can email them in advance of any questions/concerns you may have. They will respond well within 24 hours!

REGRETS: On our (day) trip to Montserret, we ran into wonderful American who used the guidebooks (Rick Steve). I had seen many many people in Spain (both Madrid and Barcelona) use this series. I wish we had known. His explanations were much better than any of the other guidebooks beginning with the letter F. Oh well!

We stayed at the Melia Barcelona and arrived on a Sunday. Our room was not ready until about 2pm, they let us store our bags and off we went. The hotel itself is very large and quite beautiful, decorated in marble and comfotable sofas in the entrance. There were some tour groups staying at the hotel, starting their bus tours from there as it was announced in the main lobby on a billboard. The room was very large and did have the "chain" hotel feeling but it was bright and clean. The bathroom was absolutely magnificet, 2 sinks and a seperate glass door for the toilet and the bidet. The desk staff were not overly friendly but they were very nice all the same. The hotel is not walking distance to anything and we took a cab a couple of times to Las Ramblas and it cost us 6 euros each time. EVERYTHING was closed in Barcelona on a Sunday so it was a great beach day! I don't know if I would stay at the hotel again just because it's not in an area that is within walking distance of restaurants and sights.

Apparently this hotel is doing a complete renovation right now, floor by floor. This probably explains why some of the comments here say it needs to be renovated. We had a recently updated room and it was incredibly nice. We had a king size bed, a flat panel plasma TV, and a bathroom with a bathtub with jacuzzi jets and a shower stall that had whole-body massage and powerful jets.

The hotel staff was all very helpful, the bar was very nice and the drinks very good, and the meeting facilities top notch. They had a wonderful gym (the pool is not included with the room; it's part of the spa that costs extra but it isn't a workout pool anyway).

As for location, this hotel is not in the middle of "tourist" Barcelona, meaning areas such as Las Ramblas (which is horribly overrated anyway). It is, however, near alot of good restaurants and very close to the large pedestrian walkway of Rambla de Catalunya. It's right on Av Diagonal, which is the shopping captial street of Barcelona. Barcelona has a top-notch metro system that can take you anywhere you want to go in the city (although the stop is about a 8 minute walk from the hotel) so seeing the sites is not hard.

In conclusion, this place is wonderful. The rooms are fantastic. Assuming you don't mind walking and riding the metro to seeing the "sights," you're love the location. And maybe you'll see some parts of Barcelona that are not just for tourists.

Melia Barcelona compares favorably vs other 4 star hotels in Barcelona. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The waiters at the bar made us sandwiches at 2am, as we were starving after a delayed EasyJet flight from London. Although the hotel was far away from the main tourist areas, we found it very easy to commute everywhere as taxis were very cheap. I would definitely stay there again if I get a good rate for a short city break. However, I would not recommend it for a romantic escape/anniversary etc.

The Sol Melia is a nice hotel - gorgeous lobby - but not what I would rate a five-star ... more like a four-star... the room was very small - two beds pushed together with no space in between (a twin room, this was)... bathroom was nicer than the bedroom. It seemed to be much more geared toward business travelers than tourists... The hotel's about a 5-euro taxi ride to all the best things in Barcelona, i.e. Las Ramblas.
The best thing about it was the terrific buffet breakfast, which was included in our package. That was really an added plus... If it wasn't so far away from the "hub" of things, I'd stay there again...

Yes Melia service exceeded our expectations, it was our first trip to Barcelona and we enjoy our 12 day stay at Melia. The service is flawless; everyone goes the extra mile to be sure you are satisfied. The housekeeping staff is particularly attentive, bilingual. Impeccable service and breakfast buffet was delicious. Concierge finds you a taxi immediately. One tip, if you plan to use the pool take a hair cap otherwise you cannot go into the pool or you must buy one there. We decided to buy it, no regrets the pool is fantastic. We cannot wait to go back again and stay at the Melia.

We went fully expecting a 5* hotel (as it's rated), but it fell far below even our lowest expectations! It's not within walking distance to tourist attractions and the surrounding area leaves much to be desired. The hotel's restaurant and room service food are poor and the decor/furnishings of standard rooms seem more like American 3 or 4* level. Then there's the service...AWFUL. When we arrived, in spite of our advanced request, my husband and I were given twin beds instead of one double bed in a nonsmoking room. Then, we spent the *whole* first day there dealing with the management because first our TV didn't work, then we found out our in-room safe was dead, and finally our bidet started leaking all over our bathroom floor! They only agreed to move us to an upgraded room after *extensive* complaining/demanding. The superior room's decor was very modern, beautiful and 5*...but it was an illusion, all flash and same problems. The safe didn't work and was irreparable(apparently, they couldn't replace it either so they offered to move us AGAIN!--plus they had no public safes at the front desk), the movies and time/alarm functions were not set-up or accessible on the TV (which was important b/c there's no alarm clock or wake-up service), and there was a flood on the bathroom floor every time you took a shower (standing with glass door). Through our dealings, we discovered that there is really no manager or concierge--only reception and a PR person who was inconsistently available and unable to fully accommodate. Reception was only marginally willing and helpful in making tour and restaurant reservations. The room service operator couldn't speak English, so we had to go through Reception to translate what we wanted to order. Plus, when we just wanted some ice for the beverages in the lukewarm refrigerator, they charged us $5 for ice. Although in Melia's Madrid hotel, they offered complementary breakfast, it was almost $30 per person at this location for the exact same buffet. The only aspect we didn't have complaints about?--the maid and maintenance staff.

Hi Ian, you can get a metro, it won’t take you direct to the hotel but you can get a tram which is close to the hotel with a very short walk. Drassenes to Maria Cristina on the metro and then on ground level Maria Cristina to Frances Macia on the tram. Taxi might be easier if you have lots of luggage. Hope this helps.
