Paul's Private Tour: LGBT in Bavaria

By Paul Riedel
About
The third gender is not a theory and not a lifestyle. On the other side, religion and religious morality are theories, ideologies and yes, they are lifestyles. With this perspective, we walk through Munich and discuss LGBT-issues with society, history, the churches and also the Nazi-Era. Surprising but true that Islam had homosexuals accepted in their history. The Catholics also have blessed knights and their fellows in the middle age. "I would rather be a cold warrior than a warm brother," said Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauß loathing about homossexuals. Sad but true. This documents a lot about the third gender in Bavaria. Prejudices came through belief, fear or politics and even with the difficult progress, we are far from the freedom that we enjoyed in our society 2000 years ago. In my tour of Munich, I talk about some issues related to the persecution and acceptance of homosexuals in Bavaria. Personalities like Freddy Mercury and King Ludwig II will be part of it.

Great intro tour to Munich for history lovers!
This was great to get a real scope of the old town. It helped us to understand with our guide sybille how the expansion and rebuilding of the city over time has shaped today’s skyline. Simply amazing!

Excellent time for education and fun!
This was not only fun to learn about the different types beer and food that compliments each type but Sybille was great! We enjoyed the museum tour especially showing the history of breweries and Oktoberfest but puts it all together in a small museum.

Enjoy a beer and a pretzel in a Munich beer garden.
The 1 pretzel and 1 beer was good. We learned you can add apple juice to your beer. It was nice to see where the Oktoberfest takes place.

    Munich old town tour
We had a fantastic tour. Paul’s partner, John, was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable and gave us plenty of time. Even a short stop at cafe for more history and a beer. Highly recommend.

    Sunday Funday
This tour is one of our highlights of many in the beautiful city of Munich. The day started gray kool and light drizzle. First of all prior to meeting Paul, my wife and I had a great breakfast Rosi on Rosenheimer Str. near our hotel. We headed out to meet Paul at Karlstor where the party was just beginning. With time to spare we stopped at Augustiner Stammhaus for some drinks and unbeknown to us live music. People dancing eating and drink Munich authentic food and my favorite beer. Finally we met Paul, who was happy to start the tour by explaining the Karlstor area and historical significance. We began to walk the old town area and Paul explained the architectural history and influence of buildings. The tour continued through the city which is spectacular and made several stops at the beautiful churches along the area. Paul’s incredible knowledge of history and facts is what made the tour spectacular. Me being a history buff and Paul’s brilliant perspective really tied everything I had learned about Munich. Paul also showed us some great cafe’s which we even stopped to have my favorite double espresso and my wife’s favorite cafe Americano. Great cafe. At the excitement of my wife Paul also showed us some great shopping locations which ended our tour. Paul we love to thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we are so humble that you could spend a Sunday afternoon showing us the the beautiful city of Munich. We highly recommend Paul’s tour.

Beer like you've never tasted before!
This was such a fun tour. First he greeted us with a gingerbread cookie that smelled phenomenal. Next, we went to the Beer Museum, not at all what I was anticipating. Paul taught us different ways to drink beer. I am not a drinker, but when he put the apple juice into the beer, it tasted completely different. Then he added water and it changed it again. The last thing was an espresso type addition. That I didn't care for at all, but I do not drink coffee. But I will try the apple juice with beer again! Following that he took us to another place, I think it's name was Atles Hackerhaus, where we enjoyed food (sausages, sauerkraut, or potato salad and apple streudel), and very interesting conversation. He paired us with other Americans and we had a lot in common with them. Paul is a great host and I highly recommend his tours! He also took us on a tour of the Nymphenburg Palace, which I reviewed separately. Awesome guide!!

    Chariots await you!
This was a highlight. So much to see and absorb in the castle I loved seeing the chariots and the porcelain display. We got a bonus because the garden area was open so we got to see the fountain and Magdalena house (church). Very informative and worth your time. Paul is a wealth of knowledge! He went above and beyond for us. He even showed us how to use public transportation. He suggested a different tour for us later in the day. He took us to a place to exchange our dollars for euros at s much cheaper rate. He makes you want to soak up every second one visits in Munich! Very nicely done!

    Amazing Tour!!
Paul was lovely! He was so sweet, lots of knowledge, extremely entertaining, and over all an absolute delight! We learned a lot of history on his walking tour of Munich, and it was history that as an American we had not heard of before. We asked him to give us more details on WWII and he did just that. He gave perspective of the people, how times were for all living in Munich, and great information over all. I would highly suggest his tour. He has a world of knowledge on multiple subjects about the city!

    We had so much fun!!
We had the best time! We did the tour with John who works with Paul. We had a tour with Paul earlier that day and had the best time ever. I want to brag on John though, and the tour we had with him. He was so incredibly hospitable, entertaining, filled with knowledge, great English, and over all a great guy. We sampled beer at a museum and learned a lot about the breweries, then went on to sample a great amount of food at another location. You should really do this tour and another tour that Paul has. My family (which there was seven of us) all agreed that if we had not done a tour with Paul and John then we would have missed a lot of history, architecture, and local culture. I highly suggest Paul and John for all your tours in Munich. You will not be disappointed!

    Tour with paul
Paul was overbooked and met us at the beer tasting. John was an admirable replacement. The beer tasting was good. We were hoping for a basic beer review, but Paul was more technical talking about mixing beers and adding mixers to beers. Not something we were interested in. Based on the tour description, we were expecting a meal rather than a cold plate. The description didn’t align with actual tour.

Spectacular tour. Not only interesting general history but lgbt inside knowledge that we wouldn’t get anywhere else. He brought us to historical sites and fun current places, like the Pink Christmas Market. Made the city come alive. I wish he had a tour in every city that we visit. Highly recommend
