Pec, Puig, Paintsil score in Galaxy’s 3-2 victory over Timbers

CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Gabriel Pec scored a first-half goal, Riqui Puig and Joseph Paintsil found the net in the second half and the Los Angeles Galaxy held off the Portland Timbers for a 3-2 victory on Saturday night.

Pec scored the only goal of the first half in the 38th minute to give the Galaxy (14-5-7) the lead. Paintsil and Puig had assists on the score for the Western Conference leaders.

Puig used Paintsil's ninth assist of the season and one from Diego Fagúndez in the 48th minute to give LA a two-goal lead. It was Puig's eighth netter of the season to go along with 11 assists.

Jonathan Rodríguez answered in the 52nd minute to pull the Timbers (10-9-6) within a goal. Evander notched his 13th assist and Santiago Moreno collected his 11th on Rodríguez’s 12th goal of the campaign.

Bassett was fouled by Justen Glad and delivered the winning kick, beating RSL goalkeeper Gavin Beavers to the top center.

Andrés Gómez scored two goals for his fourth brace of the season for Real Salt Lake.

Gómez staked RSL to an early 1-0 lead but the Rapids went ahead 2-1 when Jonathan Lewis and Sam Vines scored four minutes apart late in the half. Bassett assisted on both goals.

Denis Bouanga scores twice as LAFC snaps Sounders’ five-match win streak with 3-0 victory

LAFC (14-5-5) took a 1-0 lead just 16 minutes into the match after a hand ball foul on Seattle defender Nouhou Tolo following a video review led to Bouanga's PK.

Mateusz Bogusz gave LAFC a two-goal lead when he scored unassisted in the 26th minute off a set piece. It was his 13th goal of the season.

Bouanga found the net for the 16th time this season to make it 3-0 in the 74th minute. Kei Kamara notched his third assist on the goal and defender Sergi Palencia collected his fourth.

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Whitecaps demonstrated how good they can be, but also showed they still need to be better in a 4-3 loss to the Houston Dynamo in a Major League Soccer match Saturday night that snapped their six-game unbeaten streak.

Striker Fafa Picault scored twice and assisted on a goal by defender Ranko Veselinovic as the Whitecaps battled back from a 2-0, first-half deficit to take a 3-2 lead. The Dynamo then stunned the crowd of 24,114 at BC Place Stadium by scoring twice in nine minutes for the road win.

“It’s tough when you concede two goals like that,” said Veselinovic. “They were all good goals, but we need to do better as a team not to allow them to arrive at those spots so easy.”

Houston’s Griffin Dorsey scored his second goal of the night with a shot through traffic in the 87th minute. The Dynamo’s Brad Smith tied the match 3-3 with a blast that went past Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka’s hand in the 78th minute.

Canada opens U-20 men’s championship with 2-2 draw against Honduras
