Harris looks to lock up the Democratic nomination after Biden steps aside, reordering the 2024 race
6 minute read Updated: 9:09 AM CDTWASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris moved swiftly to lock up Democratic delegates behind her campaign for the White House after President Joe Biden stepped aside amid concerns from within their party that he would be unable to defeat Republican Donald Trump.
Biden's exit Sunday, prompted by Democratic worries over his fitness for office, was a seismic shift to the presidential contest that upended both major political parties' carefully honed plans for the 2024 race.
Aiming to put weeks of intraparty drama over Biden's candidacy behind them, prominent Democratic elected officials, party leaders and political organizations quickly lined up behind Harris in the hours after Biden announced he was dropping his reelection campaign.
Biden's departure frees his delegates to vote for whomever they choose. Harris, whom Biden backed after ending his candidacy, is thus far the only declared candidate and was working to quickly secure endorsements from a majority of delegates.

Boy, 14, charged in violent crime spree in city
2 minute read 9:08 AM CDTA 14-year-old boy is facing more than a dozen charges, including breaches of a sentence, after he allegedly went on a spree of break-ins, thefts and assaults over a six-week span.
Police said the teen was arrested after he allegedly broke into a shopping mall in the 500 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway at about midnight July 20.
Two glass entry doors and glass at two stores were smashed, resulting in more than $22,000 in damage, and about $3,500 in merchandise was stolen.
A suspect, who was arrested while walking near Corydon Avenue and Carpathia Road about two hours later, was then linked to four other incidents, including violent robberies.
