Goldeyes blank Milkmen, stretch streak to six

Zoe Pierce 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:58 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are the hottest team in the American Association right now.

With a clean 8-0 win against the Milwaukee Milkmen, the Fish completed their second series sweep in a row, extending their longest winning streak of the season to six games in front of 4,803 fans at Blue Cross Park on Sunday.

Dominant pitching, which is almost a guarantee for the Goldeyes this season, was led by starter Joey Matulovich who picked up his eighth win of the season.

“He’s been unbelievable,” said manager Logan Watkins. “I can’t even think if he’s had a bad game… He just continues to go out and prove that he’s one of the best pitchers out there.”

Mariners star Julio Rodríguez day-to-day with sprained ankle after crashing into outfield fence

Shane Lantz, The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:13 PM CDT

SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners star Julio Rodríguez is day-to-day with a sprained right ankle after crashing into the center-field fence Sunday while trying to catch a long drive hit by Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez.

Rodríguez grabbed his ankle in pain and remained on the ground for a few minutes before walking off the field with Seattle athletic trainer Taylor Bennett and manager Scott Servais in the sixth inning.

The two-time All-Star and 2022 AL Rookie of the Year was replaced in center field by Victor Robles, who shifted over from right. Luke Raley moved from first base to right field, and Ty France entered the game at first.

The initial X-rays on Rodríguez’s ankle were negative, according to Servais, and the 23-year-old outfielder will likely undergo an MRI before returning to the lineup.

Talkative Giants manager Bob Melvin ejected before first pitch at Colorado

The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 7:45 PM CDT

DENVER (AP) — San Francisco Giants manager Bob Melvin wasn't around for the finish Sunday as his team defeated the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

He didn't even make it to the start, for that matter.

In an unusual scene, Melvin was ejected before the first pitch after he and bench coach Ryan Christensen delivered the lineup card to home plate umpire Alex MacKay.

“I just talked too much,” Melvin said following the Giants' 3-2 victory. “Umpiring’s a hard job, I’m aware of that, just probably said too much. I didn’t plan that, it wasn’t choreographed. I probably went too far.”
