Goldeyes blank Milkmen, stretch streak to six

Zoe Pierce 4 minute read Yesterday at 6:58 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are the hottest team in the American Association right now.

With a clean 8-0 win against the Milwaukee Milkmen, the Fish completed their second series sweep in a row, extending their longest winning streak of the season to six games in front of 4,803 fans at Blue Cross Park on Sunday.

Dominant pitching, which is almost a guarantee for the Goldeyes this season, was led by starter Joey Matulovich who picked up his eighth win of the season.

“He’s been unbelievable,” said manager Logan Watkins. “I cant even think if he’s had a bad game… He just continues to go out and prove that he’s one of the best pitchers out there.”

It looked like the Winnipeg Goldeyes weren’t going to muster a hit Tuesday night against the Kansas City Monarchs — until a six-run sixth inning suddenly propelled the Fish to a 7-3 victory.

From just south of the border, Cadyn Schwabe is the first player from North Dakota to play with the Winnipeg Goldeyes after signing with the Fish on June 29.

From watching the team as a kid, Schwabe, born and raised in Thompson, N.D., a small town about 22 km south of Grand Forks, has Winnipeg connections and is happy to be a Goldeye.

The outfielder is actually a dual-citizen thanks to his father, Jason Schwabe, being from Winnipeg.

Jason played baseball at Mayville State and professionally in Australia — but he also made his impact in Manitoba, playing with Scott Neiles (former Goldeyes coach from 1994-2000) on the St. Boniface Native Sons, a Manitoba Senior baseball team.

Goldeyes end home stand on high note

Zoe Pierce 4 minute read Monday, Jun. 24, 2024

After dropping the past five games, the Winnipeg Goldeyes ended their home stand on a high note.

In the losing streak, the Goldeyes did not score more than three runs in a game. However, on Sunday, their bats came alive with the Fish finally managing to back their strong pitching staff with a needed showing of offence in a 5-2 win against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Blue Cross Park.

The Goldeyes dropped the series but avoided back-to-back series sweeps in front of 3,117 fans.

“Obviously going 4-5 on the homestead wasn’t ideal, especially when we started 3-0,” said manager Logan Watkins. “It’s part of baseball, there’s gonna be ups and downs, times where we get cold. Kind of a tough week there for a little but good to win this one.”

Goldeyes come up on short end of pitchers’ duel with RailCats

A pitching battle took place between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Gary SouthShore RailCats Tuesday night.

Starting pitcher Landen Bourassa put on a star performance, but the Fish offence couldn’t say the same in a 1-0 loss on a windy night at Blue Cross Park in front of 2,411 fans.

“(Bourassa) has been about as good as we could have ever asked for him to be so far this year,” said manager Logan Watkins. “He doesn’t deserve to take losses when he pitches as well as he does, but hopefully we can get some sort of bounce going.”

Bourassa went six scoreless innings without allowing a hit until the RailCats took a 1-0 lead late in the game off the bat of centre-fielder Francisco Del Valle, whose single brought in right fielder Chad Smith.

Onyshko comes home to sign with Goldeyes

Free Press Staff 2 minute read Friday, Jun. 14, 2024

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have added some local flavour to their roster.

Ben Onyshko, 27, is joining the Fish after being released by the Seattle Mariners organization earlier this month.

The left-handed pitcher, who was drafted by the big-league club in the 24th round in 2018, was in the middle of his third season of Double-A with the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League. He appeared in 77 games at that level, including three starts, with a 4-3 record and 5.17 ERA.

“We’re thrilled to add Ben to our roster,” Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said Friday in a media release. “Not only is it exciting to get an experienced arm on our pitching staff but it’s an even bigger addition because he’s from Winnipeg. I know he will bring a lot of passion and pride to play for his hometown team and I expect great things from him.”

The late, great Earl Weaver was once asked, “What is the key to success in professional baseball?”

“Nobody likes to hear it, because it’s dull, but the reason you win or lose is darn near always the same — pitching,” the Hall of Fame manager stated.

Wise words, indeed, and ones that are certainly ringing true these days for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The American Association club has been piling up the victories lately, thanks mainly to the marvellous efforts of the men on the mound.

First-year manager Logan Watkins has assembled an 11-man pitching staff that currently tops the 12-team loop with a sparkling 3.59 earned-run-average. To put that in perspective, the league average right now is 4.73.

Gio Brusa and the Winnipeg Goldeyes had some home-field luck on their side Wednesday.

The designated hitter for the Fish hit a grounder with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning that was misplayed by Kane County Cougars’ second baseman Josh Allen, allowing the tying and winning runs to score.

The Goldeyes and a crowd of 6,438 — including a sea of enthusiastic school kids taking in the rare late-morning start at Blue Cross Field — celebrated a 4-3 comeback win against the American Association’s East Division leaders.

The error allowed Miles Simington (who led off the ninth with a double) and Rob Emery (who was hit by a pitch) to scamper home.

When it rained, it poured on Grant Townsend.

As a large rain cloud began to roll over downtown Winnipeg in the seventh inning of Friday’s contest against the Lincoln Saltdogs, the Goldeyes reliever was amid a storm of his own on the baseball diamond.

Townsend assumed a 3-2 lead from starting pitcher Travis Seabrooke, who tossed 6 2/3 strong innings with four strikeouts, and watched it disappear on two swings. First was Saltdogs left fielder Aaron Takacs, who sent a long blast over the right field wall for a grand slam.

A couple of batters later, centerfielder Nick Anderson sent a three-run shot over the wall in left to blow it open just before a 44-minute rain delay sent the teams to the locker room.

Lanier, Katz to join AA hall of fame

Winnipeg Goldeyes president Sam Katz and former longtime manager Hal Lanier will be inducted into the American Association of Professional Baseball’s Hall of Fame later this year.

They join legendary outfielder Reggie Abercrombie and the club’s first manager Doug Simunic as hall of fame inductees with ties to the Goldeyes.

“It’s appropriate that two people who have meant so much to the game of baseball in Winnipeg are entering the Hall of Fame at the same time,” said Goldeyes GM Andrew Collier.

Katz brought professional baseball back to Winnipeg in 1994 after more than two decades. After some promising early returns, he spearheaded a new ballpark — now known as Blue Cross Park — in the city’s downtown, which opened in 1999.

Logan Warkentin took an extra breath to take in Blue Cross Park on Sunday.

The Winnipeg-born outfielder had been in the stands on countless occasions as a fan but on this day was in the dugout as a member of the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Warkentin was acquired Saturday evening in a corresponding move after the club transferred the contract of Canadian outfielder Adam Hall to the major-league Milwaukee Brewers.

Zac Reininger and Logan Watkins shared a laugh as they hit ground balls to the Winnipeg Goldeyes infielders during batting practice Wednesday.

They may have joked about Reininger, a pitcher, taking swings before starting a game later that evening — an unconventional approach for the position — or relived a funny story from their playing days.

As funny as it may sound for a player and manager, Reininger and Watkins share one of the closest relationships on the Goldeyes this season.

In fact, the biggest driver for the strong-arm from San Antonio, Texas, agreeing to come out of retirement and play in Winnipeg was knowing Watkins would be at the helm.

A healthy Adam Hall is a weapon for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

In his first game back after missing a week with quad tightness, the 24-year-old went three-for-four with a walk and a home run as the designated hitter to spur the Goldeyes’ offence in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Dogs in Tuesday’s home opener at the downtown park.

“You see what he’s capable of tonight and you kind of really wish you could have had him through the stretch on the road there because we lost some close games and he could have been one of the guys that tipped us over the edge on a couple of those close games,” said manager Logan Watkins.

Hall, who has been tasked as the club’s leadoff hitter to start the year, continues to sizzle out of the gates with a .545 batting average through the first three contests of his career in Winnipeg.

Goldeyes thump Railroaders as bats come to life in back-to-back wins

Mike McIntyre 4 minute read Wednesday, May. 15, 2024

It would have been easy to get discouraged after starting the new season with four consecutive losses by a combined total of just six runs.

Instead, the Winnipeg Goldeyes responded to some early adversity by coming out swinging — quite literally in this case — as they wrapped up a six-game set with the Cleburne Railroaders with back-to-back dominant victories.

A 16-0 shellacking on Monday night in Texas was followed up with a 9-0 thumping on Tuesday afternoon. Just like that, the fledgling Fish are suddenly flying high and full of confidence.

“It was great to see the guys stay positive and fight through some close losses,” manager Logan Watkins told the Free Press, in a phone chat. “We had a chance to win every single game of the series, and in those four losses just had some tough luck.”

Goldeyes strike out in season opener

The Winnipeg Goldeyes struck out in their first game of the 2024 campaign.

The baseball club opened the American Association season with a 5-3 loss to the Cleburne Railroaders in Texas on Thursday.

Kasey Kalich earned the win while allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings of work for the hosts. Colton Eastman picked up the loss for Goldeyes after giving up four runs in five innings.

Eastman was tagged for two home runs — a two-run shot by Brian O’Grady in the second inning and a solo bomb by Carter Aldrete in the fourth — which proved to be the difference.
