Goldeyes blank Milkmen, stretch streak to six

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are the hottest team in the American Association right now.

With a clean 8-0 win against the Milwaukee Milkmen, the Fish completed their second series sweep in a row, extending their longest winning streak of the season to six games in front of 4,803 fans at Blue Cross Park on Sunday.

Dominant pitching, which is almost a guarantee for the Goldeyes this season, was led by starter Joey Matulovich who picked up his eighth win of the season.

“He’s been unbelievable,” said manager Logan Watkins. “I can’t even think if he’s had a bad game… He just continues to go out and prove that he’s one of the best pitchers out there.”

The now 2-5 Bombers have already had their fair share of rough outings in 2024, but this one was the biggest letdown of them all.

Meanwhile in Riderville, life’s good as the team in green are now 5-1 and sit at the top of the West Division with the B.C. Lions.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Dan Brown’s mates have been partying this week as the unheralded Englishman dared to challenge for the British Open title.

He might finally join them in a drink Sunday after finishing his debut major tournament in a tie for 10th place at Royal Troon.

The 29-year-old Brown’s performance also earned him qualification to next year’s Open, at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, and a paycheck of $317,534.

“At the minute it’s probably a little bit more disappointment, but when I reflect on it, I’ll be obviously very pleased,” he said.

In an unusual scene, Melvin was ejected before the first pitch after he and bench coach Ryan Christensen delivered the lineup card to home plate umpire Alex MacKay.

“I just talked too much,” Melvin said following the Giants' 3-2 victory. “Umpiring’s a hard job, I’m aware of that, just probably said too much. I didn’t plan that, it wasn’t choreographed. I probably went too far.”

Collins, a 24-year-old defender, fractured her left leg Thursday in a training match against Nigeria in Spain.

As a result, Canadian head coach Bev Priestman has elevated midfielder Gabrielle Carle, 25, to the active roster while Scott has been summoned to train with the squad as an alternate.

The seven-time world champion extended his record podium haul following a classic Hamilton drive that featured a scintillating duel with rival Max Verstappen.

The jousting between the two best drivers of their generation ended with Verstappen’s Red Bull momentarily going airborne after they made contact late in the race. Verstappen had been battling for several laps to get into third position.

“The close battle we had at the end was a bit hair-raising but that’s motor racing,” the 39-year-old Hamilton said.
