EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she doesn’t think her cabinet ministers and political staff accepting tickets to luxury suites at playoff hockey games runs afoul of ethics rules. Smith says expects individual MLAs to follow the rules and disclose gifts properly to the province’s ethics commissioner. But Opposition New Democrat leader Naheed Nenshi says attending the games on lobbyists’ dimes is a clear example of cronyism and entitlement. What do the Jets do with Perfetti?

Ken Wiebe 7 minute read Thursday, Jul. 18, 2024

The next contract for Cole Perfetti has already been a subject of great debate, with plenty of folks lining up on either side of the argument and offering their two cents on why he should either take a bridge deal or opt for a long-term extension with the Winnipeg Jets.

Perfetti, the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, has completed his three-year, entry-level contract and is coming off his most productive season with the Jets.

There were plenty of important steps forward when it comes to Perfetti’s progression and the final raw numbers (19 goals, 38 points in 71 games) were impressive.

Now, that’s not to say that it was smooth sailing for Perfetti, who got off to an excellent start and was operating at nearly a point-per-game level before an extended dry spell hit.

Arniel high on Winnipeg Jets

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Wednesday, Jul. 17, 2024

Some observers see holes, Scott Arniel sees options and opportunities.

The head coach of the Winnipeg Jets is understandably optimistic about the coming season, while not ignoring the departure of several key pieces of the puzzle during free agency.

Since he was hired in late May as the successor to Rick Bowness, Arniel has been working at a frenetic pace: putting together a coaching staff and preparing for the upcoming season.

The 2024 NHL Draft and the annual Jets’ development camp is in the rearview mirror and Arniel has basically set the agenda for the coaches summit, which will take place at the end of the month.

Whiteout parties whip up green for city charities

Ken Wiebe 4 minute read Wednesday, Jul. 17, 2024

Scott Arniel remembers what it was like to experience the original Whiteout inside Winnipeg Arena as a player and to see how the event brought Manitobans together.

Nearly four decades later, the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets is encouraged to see the tradition continue and on a day where the United Way and True North Sports and Entertainment announced it is making a contribution of $100,000 — to be split equally between four community charities — Arniel was among the speakers at a press conference in downtown Winnipeg who took pride in knowing what the cash would be used for.

“Winnipeg has been home for me since 1981, when I first came here. My wife Lia is from here and we raised our family here over the years and we are personally invested in efforts to make our city a better place,” said Arniel. “Being part of the original Jets Whiteout back in the ’80s, it was an exciting part of my personal hockey story. Now that my role has changed, in moving behind the bench, it’s exciting to see that this tradition not only lives on, but has grown tremendously.”

The Jets were eliminated in five games in the opening round series against the Colorado Avalanche, but the parties held during the three home games helped boost the total amount True North, in partnership with United Way Winnipeg, has contributed to more than $312,000 into downtown agencies to combat homeless, addiction and hunger throughout the Whiteout Street Parties.

Evgeny Kuznetsov clears unconditional waivers, has his NHL contract terminated by the Hurricanes

Stephen Whyno, The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Jul. 18, 2024

Evgeny Kuznetsov had his contract terminated Thursday after clearing unconditional waivers, bringing an abrupt end to the talented but inconsistent center's NHL career, at least for the time being.

The Carolina Hurricanes put Kuznetsov on unconditional waivers Wednesday for the purpose of terminating his deal. Kuznetsov by agreeing to the mutual termination walks away from the $6 million salary owed to him in the final season of his $64.2 million, seven-year deal originally signed in 2017.

“Ultimately both sides agreed this was the best course of action for both the player and the team,” general manager Eric Tulsky said Wednesday. “We thank Evgeny for his time with the team and wish him and his family the best.”

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Kuznetsov was planning to mutually terminate his contract and go home to Russia to play for SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL. He and his camp had to agree to such a move for this to happen now, unless the Hurricanes waited for a buyout window to open later this summer when one of their restricted free agent arbitration cases was settled.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is in danger of missing the entire 2024-25 NHL season after being diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle.

The team announced Tuesday that Krug will work to rehabilitate the injury without surgery over the next six to eight weeks before being re-evaluated. If an operation is needed, the 33-year-old would be out for the season.

Krug is considered out indefinitely.

The team says the diagnosis is a cumulative result of a bone fracture earlier in his career. Krug injured his left ankle in a preseason game in 2018 while playing for Boston.

Ville Heinola has a new contract in place and will turn his attention to doing what he can to secure a spot in the opening-night lineup.

The Winnipeg Jets and the Finnish defenceman came to terms on a two-year deal that carries an average annual value of US$800,000 on Monday afternoon, scratching another restricted free agent off the to-do list.

The remaining RFAs are forward Cole Perfetti and depth defenceman Simon Lundmark.

Heinola, who was chosen 20th overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, had done enough to make the Jets last October before he suffered an ankle injury in the final game of the preseason against the Ottawa Senators.

The Associated Press 2 minute read Monday, Jul. 15, 2024

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Canadian forward Quinton Byfield has agreed to a five-year, $31.25 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings announced the deal Monday for Byfield, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft. The contract runs through the 2028-29 season.

The 21-year-old Byfield, from Newmarket, Ont., made significant strides last season with the Kings, recording a career-high 20 goals and 35 assists while playing 80 games. He was the first Los Angeles player to record a 20-goal season at his age since captain Anze Kopitar in 2007-08.

After a slow start to his NHL career as a teenager, the 6-foot-5 power forward has grown into a prominent role with the Kings, particularly on special teams. Byfield had a career-best 14 points on the power play last season, and he scored four game-winning goals while finishing with a plus-19 rating.
