Bottcher to coach Homan’s Ottawa team, join her for doubles in upcoming season

The Canadian Press 3 minute read Monday, May. 27, 2024

World champion Rachel Homan is joining forces with Alberta skip Brendan Bottcher for the upcoming curling season.

Homan announced Monday on social media that Bottcher will coach her Ottawa-based four-player team, while the two will team up in mixed doubles with an eye on the Olympic trials.

"Having Brendan join our coaching staff is incredibly exciting. His experience, leadership, and strategy will undoubtedly elevate our game," Homan said in a statement. "With Brendan living in Edmonton near me, his continuous support will be invaluable both on and off the ice.

The 35-year-old Homan, who lives in Beaumont, Alta., is coming off a stellar 2023-24 campaign in which she led her team to a fourth career Canadian women's title in February before capturing Canada's first world title since 2018 a month later.

Carruthers will throw the final rocks and Schneider, a Saskatchewan product who represented B.C. at the Brier in Regina, will slide in at third, the elite Manitoba team announced Friday. “Life’s crazy and curling might be just as crazy these days,” said Schneider, 32. Reid Carruthers has returned to the skip position for his four-man team and added Catlin Schneider to the lineup to fill a vacancy caused by the departure of Brad Jacobs.

Carruthers started last season as fourth for the Winnipeg-based team but later switched positions with Jacobs, who threw third stones. Jacobs left the squad after the season-ending Grand Slam to skip Brendan Bottcher's previous rink.

Schneider, meanwhile, recently became a free agent when his British Columbia-based team announced it was parting ways.

"Fitting our portfolio of what we do and how we approach the game, he fits the bill perfectly," Carruthers said Friday from Winnipeg. "I'm excited about the opportunity to play for a couple more years and put everything I have into it."

All it takes is one bad game to spoil a great week of curling.

Gimli’s Colton and Kadriana Lott were feeling that way Friday in Östersund, Sweden after being eliminated from the world mixed doubles curling championship.

Team Canada suffered a 6-5 extra-end loss to Estonia’s Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill in the playoff qualification round.

The Lotts went 8-1 in round-robin play but had to settle for second place in their group as their lone loss came against Sweden’s Isabella Wrana and Rasmus Wrana (who also finished at 8-1). As the top seed, Sweden earned a bye to the semifinal.

ÖSTERSUND, Sweden - Canada's Kadriana and Colton Lott were ousted from the world mixed doubles curling championship after suffering a 6-5 loss to Estonia in a playoff qualification game on Friday.

The husband-and-wife team from Gimli, Man. led 5-4 after six ends but Estonia tied the score in the seventh and then sealed the victory with a steal of one in the eighth and final end after Kadriana Lott came up just short on her draw that needed to cover the pin for the victory.

“We gave it everything we had,” said Colton Lott. “It’s disappointing, for sure. But we’re going to take this and learn from it and look for ways to be even better next season.”

It marked just the second loss of the tournament for the Canadian team, which finished 8-1 in the preliminary round.

Canadian curling champion Brad Gushue first struck up a friendship with Bob Cole some 20 years ago during the NHL lockout.

The legendary broadcaster — an elite curler himself in his younger days — would often watch the up-and-coming skip throw stones at the local club in their hometown of St. John's, N.L.

"At times during my career, I'd talk to him about how things were going," Gushue said. "The one thing with Bob, he was always very honest with me and very direct. He gave me some good advice."

Cole died Wednesday night surrounded by his family, his daughter, Megan Cole, told the CBC. He was 90.

Chelsea Carey wants to be clear. She's not trying to fill Jennifer Jones's curling shoes.

Carey has been handed the skipping reins of Jones's young team ranked second in Canada and fourth in the world.

Six-time Canadian champion Jones, also a two-time world champ and an Olympic gold medallist, retired from team curling earlier this month after the final Grand Slam of the season.

"I don't feel comfortable being put in the same conversation as Jennifer because I think she's the greatest curler of all time at this moment," Carey said. "People keep saying 'you're going to try to fill her shoes.' I'm not going to try because no one can. I don't think that's possible."
