Hamilton takes his record 200th podium after ‘hair-raising’ duel in Hungary with Verstappen

The Associated Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 2:03 PM CDT

BUDAPEST (AP) — Lewis Hamilton added to his Formula One milestones by becoming the only driver to stand on a winners’ podium for the 200th time after his third-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The seven-time world champion extended his record podium haul following a classic Hamilton drive that featured a scintillating duel with rival Max Verstappen.

The jousting between the two best drivers of their generation ended with Verstappen’s Red Bull momentarily going airborne after they made contact late in the race. Verstappen had been battling for several laps to get into third position.

“The close battle we had at the end was a bit hair-raising but that’s motor racing,” the 39-year-old Hamilton said.

Kyle Larson races to his 1st Brickyard 400 victory, making a late charge through the field

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kyle Larson left Indianapolis in May in the middle of one of the most agonizing days of his racing career.

In his return Sunday, Larson finished one of the most memorable races of his career with one of sports' more revered celebrations — kissing the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 31-year-old Californian overcame an early, unscheduled pit stop by charging from 12th place into the lead over the final 32 laps. He won battles for the lead off the final two restarts and barely avoiding a third overtime to win his first Brickyard 400 under caution.

“Today was definitely meant to be for us with the way the strategy was working out and all that fell into place,” Larson said after jumping on the roof of his car and climbing through the fence to thank the roaring fans. “I just can’t believe it. It’s just surreal to win here.”

Colton Herta dominates in Toronto for first IndyCar victory in more than 2 years

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:46 PM CDT

TORONTO (AP) — Colton Herta won the chaotic Honda Indy Toronto on Sunday for his first victory in more than two years, starting from the pole and maintaining control throughout at Exhibition Place.

The 24-year-old American completed the first weekend sweep in IndyCar history, posting the fastest times in both practices, qualifying and the warmup Sunday before winning the race for his eighth career victory.

“It’s awesome. It’s amazing,” Herta said. “For whatever reason it just hasn’t gone our way. We’ve had speed, we’ve had plenty of podiums, we’ve had a lot of poles, a lot of top fives, but no wins. And so it feels great to finally get one back.”

The race was the first street event for the hybrid powertrains introduced two weeks ago on the road course at Mid-Ohio, with Herta putting a lot of extra stress to the engine by spinning around his car in triumphant doughnuts.

TORONTO - Colton Herta celebrated his first NTT IndyCar Series win in over two years with doughnuts.

Upon crossing the finish line at the Honda Indy Toronto on Sunday, the American immediately began spinning his car around in triumphant circles.

“I love doing doughnuts,” Herta said. “And this engine’s getting ripped out after this race so I can destroy it as much I want … I hate when I don’t get to do doughnuts and this was the perfect race to win.”

Teammate Kyle Kirkwood started and finished in second, while four-time Toronto champion Scott Dixon rounded out the podium of a chaotic race in which just 15 of 27 cars were able to finish.

Piastri wins first F1 race after Norris obeys team orders in 1-2 for McLaren at Hungarian GP

The Associated Press 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:42 PM CDT

BUDAPEST (AP) — Australian driver Oscar Piastri won his first Formula One race after teammate Lando Norris handed him back the lead to complete a McLaren one-two at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

That outstanding result came after a long and at times awkward back-and-forth between the British team and its top driver before Norris finally obeyed orders to let Piastri back in front.

Piastri started second behind pole-sitting Norris and beat him to the first turn. Norris then got ahead after a pit-stop strategy that favored him despite being behind his teammate, but he eventually listened to team orders and let Piastri take the victory.

“This is the day I dreamed of as a kid, standing on the top step of the podium,” the 23-year-old Piastri said. “A bit complicated at the end, but I put myself in a good position off the start.

Brickyard 400 gives drivers on bubble another chance to win and make it in to the playoffs

Michael Marot, The Associated Press 5 minute read Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Chase Briscoe looks at the NASCAR schedule and sees five more chances to lock up a playoff spot.

He heads into the Brickyard 400 squarely on the bubble at No. 16 and fully aware of the stakes.

If he wins, he's in. Anything less will only cause more consternation during the series' two-week Olympic break, so the 29-year-old Briscoe won't play it safe on his home track.

“We’re in that weird spot where we could potentially point our way in, but realistically, we probably have to win, which, at a place like this, I think is nice to know you’re in that must-win situation,” he said. “You can just get super aggressive with strategy. If we were 20 points off the cut line or something, we would probably have to play it a little more conservative.”

Colton Herta takes pole for IndyCar street race in Toronto

The Associated Press 2 minute read Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

TORONTO (AP) — Colton Herta took the IndyCar pole position Saturday on the Exhibition Place street course, turning a lap at 59.5431 seconds.

Trying to win for the first time this season, the Andretti Global driver will start alongside Andretti teammate Kyle Kirkwood on Sunday, Kirwood had a lap at 59.6375. Meyer Shank’s Felix Rosenqvist was third at 59.8252.

Points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing will start 18th after being penalized for interference during the first qualifying segment.

“I do not agree, but it is what it is,” Palou said. “It doesn’t help for sure. As long as we have a fast car with me tomorrow, it’s frustrating, but it is what it is.”

TORONTO - It all seems lined up for Colton Herta to win his first NTT IndyCar Series event in over two years.

Herta claimed pole position in qualifying at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto on Saturday at Exhibition Place, posting a fastest lap time of 59.5431 seconds.

Better yet, Andretti Global teammate Kyle Kirkwood will join him in the front row of Sunday’s race after placing second at 59.6375, allowing the team to employ some mutually beneficial strategy.

But Herta, who dropped to second overall from pole in Toronto in 2022 and placed third after starting 14th last year, knows the 85-lap street course can still present plenty of twists.

Tyler Reddick uses final Brickyard 400 qualifying run to win the pole

Michael Marot, The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tyler Reddick watched Brickyard 400 qualifying Saturday with a skeptical eye.

He saw drivers routinely missing their marks in the first turn, struggling in the fourth turn and even witnessed one veteran, Austin Cindric, hit the wall.

So when Reddick encountered his own obstacles, the 28-year-old remained calm, adapted deftly and took advantage of the final run of the day to capture his first Brickyard 400 pole.

Reddick completed the 2.5-mile oval in 49.469 seconds, barely knocking points leader Chase Elliott out of the No. 1 starting spot. Elliott was clocked in 49.504 and will start just behind Reddick in the No. 3 spot, creating an intriguing clash between two of the top three in Cup standings.

TORONTO (AP) — A broken right thumb forced Arrow McLaren driver Alexander Rossi out of the IndyCar street race at Exhibition Place, giving Frenchman Theo Pourchaire his sixth start of the season.

Rossi was injured in practice Friday when his car hit a tire barrier and then skidded into a concrete wall. The 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner already returned to Indianapolis, where he will begin rehabbing the thumb.

It's unclear how long Rossi will be out, but after the race Sunday, the series will take a three-week break. IndyCar's next race is scheduled for Aug. 17 near St. Louis.

Pourchaire arrived at Toronto’s Pearson Airport less than two hours before the qualifying, then ran a lap of 1:01.6071 in the No. 7 Chevrolet. He will start 26th.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Cole Custer will return to NASCAR's Cup Series next season as the driver for Haas Factory, the team announced Saturday before Brickyard 400 qualifying.

The 26-year-old, who was the 2020 Cup Series Rookie of the Year, will drive the No. 41 Ford. Team officials said they would have a technical alliance with RFK Racing with additional help coming from Ford Performance.

“I’ve grown up with Haas Automation and having their name on my firesuit is something I take a tremendous amount of pride in,” Custer said. “I’m driven to win for Gene and everyone at Haas Automation because they’ve been such a big part of my career.”

Custer is the defending Xfinity Series champion and current points leader after earning his first win of the season last weekend at Pocono. He has 22 career wins across multiple series, getting his first Cup win at Kentucky in his 20th career start.

BUDAPEST (AP) — McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked out the Hungarian Grand Prix front row ahead of Formula 1 leader Max Verstappen after a stellar qualifying session for the British team on Saturday.

Norris scored his third career pole position, and will have his teammate starting right behind him as he aims for a second win of the season. Norris won in Miami in May and has come close to another victory with four podium finishes since then. He took pole in Spain last month and in Russia in 2021.

“We’ve come into this weekend and the last few confident we can fight for pole," Norris said. "We are in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us.”

The Hungarian GP marks the start of the second half of the season, which looks set to be much more hotly contested than the opening races.

Christian Lundgaard back at Exhibition Place with IndyCar’s new hybrid powertrain

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, Jul. 19, 2024

TORONTO (AP) — Christian Lundgaard is back at Exhibition Place a year after racing to his first IndyCar victory on the street course.

“It brings back a lot of good memories,” Lundgaard said Friday. “But it also brings pressure. Of course, we want to perform at the same level as we did last year.”

The race Sunday will be the first street event for the hybrid powertrains introduced two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio.

“I think with the hybrid this year, a lot of us are going to spend time trying to figure out how to utilize it, but at the same time it’s about having the car in the right window,” said Lundgaard, the 22-year-old Dane who drives for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark made her first appearance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway — on Josh Berry’s No. 4 Ford.

The rookie driver took his Stewart-Haas Racing entry the traditional 2.5-mile oval with an image of the WNBA’s rookie star plastered across the hood of his car.

Speedway officials had hoped to get the top overall pick in the WNBA draft to the facility for May’s Indianapolis 500 festivities, but the Indiana Fever spent most of that time playing road games. This weekend, Clark is participating in All-Star activities in Phoenix.

So Panini, one of Berry’s sponsors, did something neither NASCAR nor IndyCar officials could — helping make Clark the face of race weekend.

Lundgaard set to defend Honda Indy title as drivers hit track with new hybrid tech

TORONTO (AP) — Denmark’s Christian Lundgaard didn’t get the chance to celebrate his first career NTT IndyCar Series victory last year in Toronto.

The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver was pulled in the middle of his post-race press conference, needing to catch a flight home. And so, in November, he made a point of returning by intentionally booking a flight home through the Ontario capital.

The 22-year-old wanted to see the street track in its natural form, free of the race weekend buildout. He said it was “a little odd” — mostly, he just saw cars lined up in traffic.

Now, he’s back in Toronto, where he’s set to defend his title.
