Justin Rose ‘choking back tears’ after Xander Schauffele surges to British Open title

Ken Maguire, The Associated Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:27 PM CDT

TROON, Scotland (AP) — It felt like a must-have putt for Justin Rose as he tried to keep pace with Xander Schauffele on No. 12 at Royal Troon on Sunday.

Rose kneeled for a closer peek and stepped to the ball. The 21-footer looked good and the crowd was ready to erupt. It caught the left side of the cup, though, and lipped out.

Rose tossed his putter in the air, catching it on the way down. His British Open dream was dented, and Schauffele surged to the title.

Rose's lone bogey of the day dropped him a shot behind Schauffele and two strokes back of then-leader Thriston Lawrence.

Billy Horschel laments mistakes at Troon and tips cap to champion Xander Schauffele

Ken Maguire, The Associated Press 6 minute read Yesterday at 4:24 PM CDT

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Billy Horschel turned his cap around but not his fortunes in majors.

The 37-year-old American led the British Open by one shot going into Sunday's final round at Royal Troon, but it was compatriot Xander Schauffele who captured the claret jug.

His wait for a major championship goes on.

“I'm disappointed. I should feel disappointed. I had a chance to win a major,” Horschel said. “I was in a really good position. I just didn’t play — I just made a few too many mistakes today when I didn’t need to.”

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Dan Brown’s mates have been partying this week as the unheralded Englishman dared to challenge for the British Open title.

He might finally join them in a drink Sunday after finishing his debut major tournament in a tie for 10th place at Royal Troon.

The 29-year-old Brown’s performance also earned him qualification to next year’s Open, at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, and a paycheck of $317,534.

“At the minute it’s probably a little bit more disappointment, but when I reflect on it, I’ll be obviously very pleased,” he said.

Dunlap becomes first player in PGA Tour history to win as an amateur and a pro in the same year

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:06 PM CDT

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — Nick Dunlap became the first player in PGA Tour history to win as an amateur and a professional in the same year, rallying Sunday for a two-point victory in the Barracuda Championship.

In January at The American Express in La Quinta, the 20-year-old Dunlap — then a sophomore at the University of Alabama — became the eighth amateur to win a tour event and the first in 33 years. He turned professional days later.

“I never thought that I would have my name next to that, but it’s definitely an honor,” Dunlap said about the amateur-pro double. “It’s been a little tough after AmEx. You kind of lose a little bit of confidence and wonder if you can do it again.”

On Sunday at Tahoe Mountain Club in the only PGA Tour event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system, Dunlap took the lead with a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Xander Schauffele won the British Open on Sunday for his second major of the year, delivering a masterpiece at Royal Troon with a 6-under 65 to overcome a two-shot deficit and give the Americans a sweep of the four majors for the first time since 1982.

Schauffele, who faced questions at the start of the season whether he could win a major, now has two of them with the brand of golf that hasn’t been seen in 90 years of the four majors.

He won the PGA Championship at Valhalla by making a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 65. In a final round at Royal Troon set up for big drama — six players one shot behind, nine players separated by three shots — Schauffele made a tense Sunday look like a nice walk along the Irish Sea.

He is the first player to win two majors with closing rounds of 65 in the same year. Jack Nicklaus is the only other player to do it in his career.

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — Chanettee Wannasaen won the Dana Open for Children on Sunday for second LPGA Tour title, birdieing the final two holes to hold off Haeran Ryu by a stroke.

Three strokes ahead of playing partner Ryu entering the round, Wannasaen closed with a 4-under 67 to finish at 20-under 264 at Highland Meadows. The 20-year-old Thai player won the Portland Classic last year.

Ryu shot 65, also birdieing the final two holes. The South Korean player had six birdies and a bogey on the back nine.

Defending champion Linn Grant of Sweden and Ssu-Chia Cheng of Taiwan tied for third at 14 under, each shooting 68. China's Xiyu “Janet” Lin (70) and Mary Liu (69) were 12 under. Lin was the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 15 in the world.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — The only company Xander Schauffele kept at the start of the season was his name mentioned among the best players who had yet to win a major.

He had a key miss at Carnoustie that cost him a chance at the 2018 British Open. He was a runner-up the following year to Tiger Woods at the Masters. He was closing in on Hideki Matsuyama in the 2021 Masters until hitting into the water on the 16th hole.

In the first 27 majors he played, he had 12 finishes in the top 10.

Now he has the Wanamaker Trophy at home from his nail-biter of a victory in the PGA Championship. And he couldn't take his eyes off the gleaming claret jug Sunday evening after delivering what he considers the best round of his life.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Xander Schauffele went from the most nerve-wracking putt of his career to the coolest walk toward an 18th green he ever imagined.

He won a nail-biter at the PGA Championship in May. He delivered a masterpiece Sunday in the British Open. Two different finishes, two different feelings.

One major conclusion.

Schauffele has more than enough game and all the confidence in the world to win the biggest championships. Questioned at the start of the season whether he could win a major, he now has two of them.

Meissner hangs onto lead in PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship

The Associated Press 3 minute read Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) — Mac Meissner held onto the lead Saturday in the Barracuda Championship, following a late par save with a tap-in birdie in the only PGA Tour event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system.

Meissner had a one-point lead over Vince Whaley, reaching 39 points with 13 in the round delayed about 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon because of lightning.

Chad Ramey, tied for sixth with 33, was the only PGA Tour winner in the top eight after three rounds on Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood course.

“By the time I tee off tomorrow I’ll probably won’t be in the lead," Meissner said. "So, that will be nice. I’ll be able to still feel like I can chase, because it’s always easier to win a golf tournament when you’re coming from behind.”

TARZANA, Calif. (AP) — Rianne Malixi of the Philippines won the 75th U.S. Girls’ Junior a year after falling in the final, routing Asterisk Talley 8 and 7 on Saturday in the largest championship-match blowout in tournament history.

The 17-year-old Malixi won five straight holes in hot conditions at El Caballero Country Club to take a 7-up lead after 14, was 6 up after 18 and ended it with a par win on the 29th hole.

“It’s hard for me to comprehend right now because everything just came in so quickly,” Malixi said. “I know being USGA champion means a lot. Being able to do that is a huge honor for me and I’m very grateful.

Last year in the final, Kiara Romero beat Malixi 1 up at the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Eisenhower Golf Course in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Shane Lowry made a double bogey on the famous “Postage Stamp” eighth hole at Royal Troon and it only got worse for the Irishman.

Lowry led the British Open by three shots early Saturday before his day unraveled in the wind and rain. His 6-over 77 left him three shots behind leader Billy Horschel going into Sunday's final round.

Quite a turnaround after taking a two-shot lead into the weekend and pairing on Saturday with unheralded Dan Brown.

“I guess for me the eighth hole was killer really. Make par there and you can still shoot 3 or 4 over and still be leading the tournament. Just pulled my wedge shot there,” Lowry said of the 123-yard par-3 eighth.

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — Chanettee Wannasaen opened a three-stroke lead Saturday in the Dana Open for Children, shooting a 5-under 66 at Highland Meadows.

A day after finishing with an eagle to take the outright lead, Wannasaen birdied the par-5 18th to reach 16-under 197. The 20-year-old Thai player won the Portland Classic last year for her lone LPGA Tour title.

“I think I’m going to like don’t think about the result because I don’t want to get stress for tomorrow,” Wannasaen said. “Like just stay in present time. Don’t think about the future.”

Haeran Ryu of South Korea was second. She birdied the twin closing par 5s in a 65.

TROON, Scotland (AP) — The British Open brought a final two hours of the worst weather to the world's best players, and Billy Horschel was up for the fight.

Horschel flipped his cap around to keep rain from dripping off the bill. He played in short sleeves in a biting chill to swing more freely. He embraced everything about Saturday at Royal Troon on a day the course gave most players a royal beating.

He survived with a marvelous short game from pot bunkers and the rough, and he managed a 2-under 69 that gave him a one-shot lead going into a final round and his best shot at winning his first major.

“I’m excited to be here. I’ve wanted to be here my entire life,” he said. “I’m finally here.”

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Royal Troon weather rarely cooperates, so when it's good don't waste it.

Thriston Lawrence didn't. Neither did Sam Burns. They cashed in on tranquil conditions early Saturday afternoon at the British Open — before the rain came — to become serious contenders for the claret jug.

They both shot 6-under 65 to move from 10 shots off the lead to just one stroke behind leader Billy Horschel heading into Sunday.

“Obviously, I had the perfect conditions on the front nine, and just took full advantage of it,” Lawrence said of a six-birdie spree through eight holes in the third round.

McIlroy tries to plot how to salvage a season without winning a major

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 5 minute read Saturday, Jul. 20, 2024

TROON, Scotland (AP) — Rory McIlroy had plenty of time to accept that a 10th straight year would pass without him winning a major. He now has to wait 265 days for the next one, when he hears the starter at Augusta National say, “Fore, please. Rory McIlroy driving.”

The realization came on the fourth hole of the second round. He needed a good start to make the cut, maybe get back in the British Open. What he got was a triple bogey.

“Twenty-two holes into the event and I'm thinking about where I'm going to go on vacation next week,” McIlroy said after rounds of 78-75 to miss the cut by five shots.

Whatever he had in mind for vacation, his next thought was how to salvage another season that will not include a trophy from the four biggest events.
