An average rating is deceptive - it's mostly highs and lows. The highs are an interesting sense of style and some nice amenities - free soft drinks in the room, nice cosmetics, honor bar, more electric outlets than you could ever need, good internet. Lows are the inconvenience of the location which is in a not interesting suburb about 30 minutes walking and metro from the center or a EUR10-15 taxi ride, a very poor restaurant, and the general shadowy darkness of the decor and lighting. I'm still bruised from falling down the step into my room from an unlit doorway. The only thing that was average was the breakfast which was very typical for a good hotel in Europe, but not exceptional. If you are coming from the airport by taxi, ask the hotel to fax you a map and directions in Spanish for the taxi driver - they have no idea where it is and the directions you can download did not help. Staff is pleasant, although it's mixed how informative they are. I didn't have a bad stay here, but would probably not stay here again. Just not amazing for me.

What a hotel! Primero Primera ( which roughly translates as ”first first” in Spanish) reminds me of the Quiet American novel by Graeme Green. Everything about this hotel resonates with my husband and I, from its understated decor, inclusion of 1955 features, antiques and modern touches to its location outside of the hectic tourist areas of Barcelona and the refined district of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
Our room was a Junior Suite, on the third level directly overlooking the beautiful gardens and pool, staying 5 five nights. A bed had been specially made up for my son ( a rambunctious four and a half year old ), there is also safe in the wardrobe so you can secure passports and other personal items of value. There were also automatic security shutters on both my sons window and the balcony that are used to keep the heat out as well as for security. The bedding was exquisite and beds were very comfortable with a TV for us and one for our son. There was a huge bath and beautiful shower area and plenty of thick towels. We point out the bath in this room as when travelling with children it is great to be able to give them a bubble bath to help get them ready as part of their night routine for bed. We mention this as on our return journey had booked to stay for one night only on our return but did not get the same room as requested and this did not have a bath, no second TV and much smaller shower area. It also overlooked the empty vacant lot behind the manor.
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is a part of Barcelona that you can walk around and feel relaxed and safe. The reason it is an affluent area became apparent on our first day as it is full of discreet rooms of medical specialists (IVF, Ophthalmologists, ENT specialists etc).
I had to attend a conference in Barcelona and it was well worth it for us as a family to stay here not only for the security but for the extra room - the Junior Suite room is 50 square metres so ample space for us and our luggage. Primero Primera used to be an old manor house. The hotel is like an oasis in the middle of the city with a beautiful backyard area set up for entertaining. A small salt water pool but lots of beautifully inset little lounge areas to just chill and relax... beautifully laid out and designed.
There are only 4 floors with an amazing original staircase running through the middle and a custom lift that takes you up one way and lets you out on your floor another. Reception staff (especially Eva) and the lovely more mature lady who carefully explained what all the breakfast items were in English were very helpful in suggesting places for dinner and helping us navigate around.
There are photos of the family who owned (and still own) this manor house throughout the hotel. There is an area where you can make your own tea and coffee any time of the day and a fridge full of soft drinks (and some Spanish beer) and sometimes food and fresh fruit (there are also complimentary soft drinks, mineral water and Spanish beer in your bar fridge in the room). The rear wall in this communal area has a huge map of Barcelona showing where the hotel resides. There is another double room behind that has a double lounge and a hard liquor area where you can help yourself and record it as an honour system so it can be charged to your room. It has large comfortable chairs with many lamps and at the rear of one room is one of those modern gas heaters and it runs almost the breadth of the room. I can imagine this would be quite cosy during winter.
I love the Spanish bars on the window and door areas outside of the breakfast area where there are two old rubber trees with very interesting roots that just add to the vibe of the place. You can sit here and have breakfast in the morning- just sublime. Whilst the hotel has a contemporary vibe there are these lovely old world touches of a by gone era that just work. The breakfast area and parking I am sure were part of the area where the owners kept their horses (as you do in the city)... The hotel has preserved the old original electricity box and also some gears and pulleys and made these design features within the manor.
Breakfast was included in the cost of the room and every morning there was delicious warm baked bread, Jamon, Manchego cheese, fresh fruit and yoghurt. Good coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice and we made hot chocolate with the hot milk for our son. Every morning there was a different element included in the breakfast from freshly made tortillas, croissants, little cakes etc. .. In the evening if you wanted to you could sit in this area and share a bottle of wine with friends or retreat to the lounge.
We had also booked a night at this hotel on our return journey and for a small extra charge could park our hire car securely within the manor. The main gates are closed at night. We had dinner a block down the road at Bene Assai ( Carrer del Doctor Carulla 61 ). OMG the best Italian, even better than our local in Sydney. We sat outside and they served our son his spaghetti bolognaise first while we had entrees and then we had the most divine crispy based pizzas with a fresh salad and we tried a small bottle of Spanish white with entree and red Spanish (bodegas palacio glorioso crianza Rioja 2010) wine were perfect with the Pizza. My husband’s dessert( home made Tiramisu) was soooo good I had to order one for myself. We were able to see the chefs cooking in the kitchen. It was a most memorable last night for us in Barcelona.
We would recommend having a typical Spanish long lunch at La Llar d'Or Restaurant ( Via Augusta 275 ). Here for lunch we had a choice of 3 items for 3 courses and a bottle of wine for 10.95 euro per person (my husband had chicken and rabbit paella to start, i had the tuna salad ) and we both had some delicious lamb grillers with the fresh mayonnaise and fries for main and crème brulee each for desert. The staff were very accommodating of our son with chicken schnitzel and chips. I certainly wanted a siesta after that meal and took the remainder of the wine bottle back to our hotel!
Finally, we did not find the location of the hotel an impediment and found it easy to catch the train into the city. We managed to see La Segrada Familia, Park Guell and Mount Juric fountains.

We were made to feel very welcome on arrival and the receptionist kindly called a restaurant to check they were open (most are closed on Mondays). Later in the week they also printed some online tickets with no fuss. We stayed in a standard room, which surpassed our expectations. The room was a good size with a separate lobby area with a sink and a fridge stocked with soft drinks. My only minor criticism of the room would be the lack of good light in the bathroom. Breakfast was very relaxed and had a good choice of meats, bread, cheese and delicious muesli, although it was the same each day. Tip for anyone using public transport, the Sarria station has a more frequent service to catalunya and always felt very safe, even late at night. This hotel is great for anyone who likes to stay in a more residential area and mix with the locals, whilst having the experience of staying in a good quality hotel.

Charming in every way - this tiny 30 room hotel was inspirational.
Set in a residential area this slightly out of the way hotel was close to the metro and was so peaceful compared to larger hotels in frenetic locations.
As you enter the lobby you realise you are somewhere special, it's like entering someone's home.
The check in was a great experience, the young lady was efficient, so friendly and even gave us a tour of the hotel common areas as well as a review of local transport and dining options.
A lounge with an honesty bar for late night refreshment, a full service bar with comfy sofas was also where breakfast was served.
Several tables and chairs outside if you wanted to relax in the sunshine or shade.
A small swimming pool in a pretty garden.
The room was beautiful, well furnished and had a nice balcony (ask for a balcony room).
The bed was extremely comfortable, the mini-bar stocked with free water, soda and juices.
The bathroom had a stand up shower (as well as a bath) and the best shower head I've experienced in any hotel.
Continental breakfast was excellent with a good variety of all that you'd expect but bread a croissants worthy of a special mention.
When I return to Barcelona this is where I will stay, without question.

We stayed three nights in a 40 square meter junior suite (room 33) and loved the brightness and spaciousness. Our room had a large balcony with patio furniture where we enjoyed the complimentary drinks from the mini-frig. We had a view of the hotel pool and garden area below us. The bathroom was large by European standards with a separate tub, shower and lots of counter space. The mattress was firm and the water pressure in the shower was good. They have a wonderful common area on the lobby level with complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. The common area was very warm and cozy and also contained a small but interesting inventory of books and magazines to browse. The 24 hr gym was adequate but could use wet wipes to clean the equipment. The staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. A special thanks to Beatrice who helped plan our daily activities. She gave us great tips and really knows the city. Breakfast was fine, especially the tortilla espanola. We prefer the tortilla heated and the staff were happy to accomodate our request. While not in the city center (our preference), the hotel is a 5 min walk to the metro station and approx 10 min metro ride to the city center. The hotel is located in a lovely residential neighborhood where we always felt safe. We will defintely stay here again if we visit Barcelona in the future.

Me and my wife stayed with our 2 yr old at this hotel for 4 nights recently and had a lovely time !

The hotel is in the neighbourhood of Sarria, which is away from the city centre but only 10 minutes on the metro (The metro itself is just a 5 min walk away).

The staff here are pleasant, friendly and we had a fantastic service. Particular mention should go to Susanna (during breakfast) and Juan in the bar.

A negative, if it could be, was that the room service menu and the breakfast could do with more options (especially the breakfast with some hot options would have been nice).

But overall, we had a great time at this hotel and would definitely recommend it !

We have just returned from 2 nights at PrimeroPrimera and could not rate the hotel, the service, the breakfast, the accommodation, the whole package, highly enough! All excellent.
The hotel is family-owned and has only been a hotel for 3 years (previously a family house). The decor is sumptuous and very well thought out. It is a 6 minute walk to Les Torres Metro station and within 10 minutes you can be in Placa Catalunya and Las Ramblas.

They have an "honesty bar" for guests in a lovely lounge and a gym and even a small swimming pool in the garden.
We stayed in one of the attic rooms A5. As we were shown to our room and the staff member opened the door, we both exclaimed "Wow!" It was very well thought out with a very modern feel. The fittings simple but very comfortable with warm wood and glass. There is a minibar but soft drinks are free. There is a "pillow menu" to suit everyone and the bed is very comfortable.
In the evening the bar is warm and comfortable and very relaxing. During the morning breakfast is served there.
Again, Wow! From what I remember...
Cereals, croissant (plain and chocolate), various muffins, tortilla, meats, cheeses (soft and hard), fruits, several different breads, yogurts, coffees, teas, juices and more...

As before, we could not rate this place highly enough. We will certainly return and will recommend it to everyone who wants to listen.

It took quite a while to find this hotel both on arrival and during our stay. Many taxi drivers did not know the hotel and found it difficult to locate would recommend taking a hotel card out with you. We had booked a standard room prior to arriving. On arrival we were shown to an attic room on the top floor. The room was very dark and small it had a couple of low lighting lamps and a window the size of an A3 sheet of paper. I was really disappointed with this and went to speak to the reception staff. The lady explained that unfortunately we had booked a standard room and this was one of the bigger ones. She offered an upgrade to a superior room but at a cost of 50 euros but also offered to show me a different standard room. I opted to see the standard room which I have to say was more like what I had anticipated it was a good size nice and light with a high quality bathroom. I asked to swap to this. When we then got to the room with our luggage the lady then offered to show us a superior room as a complimentary upgrade. This room was a bigger version of the standard room she had shown us with the added extras you would expect. I wouldn't recommend the attic room but have to say the superior room we stayed in was great and is certainly worth the extra cost for the added comfort. The location of the hotel was not so great though I have to say. It is a 5 minute walk to Tres Torres station and takes about 10/15 mins to get to Placa Catalunya. The trains come every 15 mins until about 12 midnight but then are less regular and it was much easier to get a taxi back to the hotel from the centre costing about 10/12 euros. Tres Torres is on the FGC line most of the main attractions are reached via the metro this means you often have to change. Each time you change this is counted as a separate journey (you pay for each journey unless you buy a travel card the T-10 is very good value I would recommend this ten journeys for 9.75 euros). Renting a car is probably easier if staying at this hotel. The complimentary soft drinks are good (major brands) and the breakfast provided plenty of choice from croissants to cereal and sandwiches. Overall the hotel is a little pricey considering the distance from the centre of Barcelona. I would recommend staying closer to the centre but it your looking for something less busy and congested this might be the place for you.

Responded Dec 5, 2012
Dear Madam, As you mention, Primero Primera is located in a residential area just 5 stops (7minutes ride) by metro from the city center. It is a quiet area away from the bustle of the city center but sorrounded by small restaurants and shops where the locals go. All this information is clearly stated in our web site as we want to be as clear as possible. We want our clients to have a memorable experience at our hotel during their visit to Barcelona.

I have been to bercelona twice so far, life is too short and too many spots to travel to, so am not sure if I ever go back to barcelona again, but if I ever did, it would be partly to stay in this hotel!!
the hotel has everything you need,
the location is away from the busy touristic destination, it may not appeal to some, but for us, being in the middle of a fine residential area and feel how real barcelona feels , was a great experience,
the building has been renovated tastefully,
if you re looking for a grand lobby, door men, security ect ect , this is not for you, this is a chic boutique hotel, with a small but cute reception,
the room instead was big and nice with big windows with a small balcony, a big tree just in front of us, bed nice and comfortable...and almost everything apart from alcoholic drinks in the room and in the lounge is complimentary.
I have stayed in many nice hotels , but what made this one so different was the management and selection of the staff, they were so professional and friendly, and one thing i cannot tolerate is when the hotels become so greedy and precious about everything , at this hotel it was the opposite: we ve been upgraded without asking, also two free drinks, breakfast nice and enough!
the public area of the hotel is just cozy and usable, there s no piano player and lots of people, it s a nice living room , with comfortable sittings, a lot of books and magazines, snacks and drinks, a computer ...so if u re tired of going out to the busy barcelona , you can easily spend an afternoon in the hotel and relax...

We had a large one bedroom apartment on the second floor. The bathroom had a solid door, not a glass partition. The bathroom was very spacious and nice, with separate areas for the tub and the shower. Plenty of privacy. I don't recall the exact amount we pain per night but it was more than 300 euros, but not a lot more as I recall, and we thought it was a great value. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. I hope we get to go back again some day.
