Kudos to the staff! This is our second stay at the Schiphol Sheraton and I recommend this hotel without reservation. In our last stay, (October 2013) our final night was interrupted by a fire alarm. There was no emergency so it was either a malicious or a mechanical false alarm. When we checked out to catch our flight in the morning, the desk staff was very apologetic and told us that the next time we stayed there we would be upgraded. So now its December 2016 and as we are checking in, my husband tells the staff member about our last experience and asks if they will upgrade us. The staff member looks at our reservation and perhaps my SPG account and doesn't see anything. She offers to check with the manager but we said not to bother, it was silly to think that we would get upgraded. Meanwhile, her colleague is typing away and interrupts our check in to say, “It is noted here: October 24, 2013, false fire alarm at 215 AM. Upgrade next visit.” And so she upgraded us to an executive room with lounge privileges. The lounge access was a great upgrade and saved us a ton of money. It is open from 7a-11p and offers an upgraded coffee/espresso/cappuccino maker, dutch cookies and a cooler with soft drinks, water and beer. But, from 7-10 they have a hot breakfast that included scrambled and boiled eggs, mushrooms, bacon and sausage. On the cold side there were many types of bread, cold cereal, cheeses and a few cold cuts. There were also several types of fruit and sweets. I suspect that the full breakfast served in their main restaurant might have had more choices but this one had the basics served in a warm and appetizing manner. From 6-9 PM they serve two hot hor d’ourves, dutch cheeses, fruit, bread, a few salads and small sandwiches. In addition to the drinks in the cooler they also had red, white and sparkling wine. The “happy hour” was very relaxing and enjoyable and allowed us to reduce our restaurant spending by quite a lot.
The executive room was very nice, spacious and silent with a view of the runways and planes landing and taking off. The bed and bedding were very comfortable. There was a desk chair and a club chair with ottoman. Towels are ready for replacement, they felt a little stiff and were on the small side for a bath towel. But terry robes and slippers were provided and made up for the towels. My favorite amenities at this hotel are ice machines on every floor and mini fridges in every room. There is an in-room thermostat and we were able to adjust the temperature to our liking. The bathroom had a full sized tub as well as a standing shower with a full door. My only criticism is that there is no clock of any sort in the room.
The location of the hotel is within the campus of the airport. There is an escalator from the main lobby of the airport directly to the hall that connects to the hotel so that you never have to go outside. Most TA reviewers recommend choosing hotels near the city center, and I certainly understand and agree with the benefits of such. However, overseas travel exhausts me and being able to walk off the plane and go directly to the hotel enhances my experience. If I were staying in Amsterdam for several days I might move to an in-town hotel but unfortunately my Amsterdam stays have been 2 nights each so I have not moved. The train is right under the airport so getting into town is fast and comfortable. The Bell Men double as concierge and I have found them to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful and courteous. Departure from the airport is similarly convenient. No taxis or trains, no shlepping luggage. Just get up, have breakfast and walk into the airport.
