Love Island USA star Connor Newsum tells the story behind his infamous American flag Speedo: 'I loved those shorts'

Love Island USA's Connor Newsum may have exited the villa but he left a very important piece of himself behind: his American flag Speedos.

The Spokane, Washington native went home during episode 16 of the Peacock reality TV series, which is currently in its sixth season.

He hung his shorts above the bedroom door where his fellow contestants stopped to salute the shorts before saying goodbye.

'I have had those shorts for so long and all of my old friends, when I got out, hit me up and were like, 'We saw you on TV wearing the shorts,'' Connor told Us Weekly

'Obviously, I left them in the villa for everyone to enjoy, but I bought them for the 4th of July [years ago] and have worn them every 4th of July since,' he added.

The PR specialist told the outlet that he was sad he wouldn't be able to wear the shorts this fourth of July.

'I loved those shorts,' he said, adding that he planned to debut a new pair of festive shorts this year.

Connor was put on the chopping block when Leah chose to pair up with Miguel rather than Connor.

Host Ariana Madix then texted him to tell him he had 30 minutes to pack and say goodbye.

As Connor made his exit, a video from when he entered the villa played and he reacted to his initial statements.

He said when he arrived he wanted to meet a bombshell blonde, but leaving single, he didn't accomplish that task.

'I'm still hoping to meet a bombshell blonde,' he said. 'There were a few gorgeous blondes in the villa. Just don't know if they were right for me. So hoping to meet a few more outside.'

Connor didn't find love but in the end, he has no regrets.

'I didn't find what I came here for but I did find an amazing, absolutely incredible group of humans, who've just become an absolute family to me, he said.

'The guys in here, you guys are my f***ing brothers and all the girls, you're all incredible,' Connor gushed.

'You've all just taken me in and made me feel so at home here and I didn't expect that, so leaving here smiling,' he concluded.
