Despicable Me 4 tops the Fourth of July box office with a whopping $122.6M in ticket sales

Despicable Me 4 blew past the box office finish line over the extended 4th of July weekend. 

The Illumination animated adventure starring Steve Carell, 61, as the voice of  master thief Gru, who with his family and minions go into witness protection,  earned $122.6 million over the five day opening, which nearly covers the movie's $100 million budget.

Internationally, the film earned an additional $106.9 million, bringing global profits, so far, to $229.5 million, according to The Numbers.

In second place was Inside Out 2, which pulled in an estimated $30 million over the weekend. 

The Disney/Pixar animated comedy starring the voices of Amy Poehler and Maya Hawke,  helped rejuvenate the flagging box office when it was released over the Father's Day weekend in June.

With the addition of the weekend ticket tally the movie has pulled in more than $1.2 billion, making it the most successful movie of 2024 so far. 

A Quiet Place: Day One fell one spot to third with a payday of $21 million.

The thriller starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and Djimon Hounsou has enjoyed domestic and international success, with a total take of $94,356,000 in the US and another $83.8 million around the world.

MaXXXine debuted in fourth place.  

The fright flick starring Mia Goth as a murderous Hollywood starlet enjoyed a solid $6.7 million in ticket sales. 

The film is the final chapter in the X franchise, which combined with the second chapter, Pearl, has earned $14.7 million globally so far. 

Bad Boys: Ride or Die rounds out the top five with a take of $6.55 million. 

The action adventure starring Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and Vanessa Hudgens has enjoyed quite the ride, earning a total of $177.3 million in the US and another $182.8 internationally.

'What a difference a few heavy hitters can make, Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore told Variety. 'They really moved the needle and you can feel momentum building.'

Kevin Costner's saga Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 fell to sixth place its second week in theaters earning a disappointing $5.5 million.

The three hour long film has only earned $22.6 million dollars globally.

The second chapter in the tale of struggle and triumph in the American West is set to debut August 16. 

Newcomer Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot from the faith based Angel Films debuted in seventh place. 

The fact-based story about a church community of 22 families in Texas that adopted 77 foster children sold  $3.2 million worth of tickets.

That was followed by the futuristic Kalki 2898-AD. The film from India focuses on the Hindu god Vishnu, who comes to Earth to protect the world from evil, filled seats to the tune of $1.8 million.

The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Jodie Comer, dropped to ninth place, with rumblings of $1.3 million.

Kinds of Kindness, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons landed in tenth, with earnings of $860,000. 

Fly Me to the Moon, starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum will enter the fray next weekend in wide release, along with the fright flicks Lumina and Longlegs.
