How can we build a better future, in which public-interest news not only survives but thrives? That is the central question in the News Futures 2035 report. An interesting initiative that brough together more than 300 thought leaders from various backgrounds in the UK to discuss the future of trustworthy public-interest news. Giddy-up! 'I am Maximus' may have won the Grand National on Saturday, but what was the impact of the annual race? UKOM endorsed data from Ipsos iris shows that Sky Betting & Gaming had the day’s biggest audience (1.1m) among betting apps, as well as the most time spent on its app. Across the six biggest betting brands by audience, three of them saw time spent on their app more than triple compared to the previous Saturday. William Hill recorded a 292% increase in time spent on its app on the day of the National compared to previous Saturday, higher than Ladbrokes Coral (+282%) and Paddy Power (+234%). A series of 'platform resets' is putting even more pressure on news publishers, according to fresh data from our Digital News Report. Here's why This year's figures show a further decline in the use of Facebook for news, and a growing reliance on a range of alternatives including messaging apps and video platforms. Facebook news consumption is down 4 points across all countries in the last year; a decline that is higher in countries such as the Philippines (-11), Argentina (-11) and Colombia (-10). What about the other platforms? YouTube is used for news by many people in our global sample, especially in the Global South. WhatsApp and TikTok are increasingly important too. The numbers in the chart above reflect average data for 12 countries we have been following for ten years. The use of TikTok for news is even bigger among young people and in countries such as Thailand (39%), Kenya (36%) and Indonesia (29%). You'll find more figures and context in the report.
