During a recent Cision webinar, a panel of journalists touched on the biggest challenges facing journalism today, the impact of social media and artificial intelligence (AI) on the industry, and what it all means for their profession going forward. Journalists also shared their advice for PR and communications pros trying to build relationships with journalists: 📰 Read the outlet. Read the work. It's very obvious when you get a pitch where someone just has no idea what the outlet really covers or what its identity is. ⌚ Be available. When working on time-dependent stories, reporters often need to work with PR professionals on very tight deadlines. 🌍 Schedule pitches for the relevant time zone. ❌ Don’t pitch during busy periods. Wait until the event is over before pitching. 💬 Personalize and localize. Relevance is critical for local reporters. Do any of these surprise you? | Wednesday Musings | In today's rapidly evolving communication landscape, it's easy to believe that traditional media outlets like newspapers, television, and radio have lost their influence. However, these channels continue to play a significant role in reaching target audiences, despite a decline in overall consumption. Building strong relationships with journalists goes beyond simply securing media placements. It's about fostering trust and credibility, and establishing a mutually beneficial partnership. Understand that journalists are part of a media community that thrives on connections. Collaborating with journalists and showcasing newsworthy stories, can create narratives that inform, engage, and inspire your audience. Traditional media remains a powerful tool for reaching target audiences. Build trust and strong relationships with journalists, remember they have networks also. Collaborate and enhance your storytelling. #traditionalmedia #journalism #mediarelations #linkedintt

Social media is an important tool for journalists and for newsrooms. It is a fantastic way to reach new audiences, tell the stories people really want and need to hear, to engage with people in visually and auditorily interesting ways and to do so much more. However, there are times when the presence of social media in the newsroom begins to compromise the effectiveness of that newsroom. Check out my most recent blog post to learn how I think newsrooms big and small should be using social media.
