If you see any of these images today, know that you're a part of raising awareness of Fragile X (FX) syndrome, and celebrate the progress of research for FX. Today is World Fragile X Day: a day we celebrate people living with Fragile X syndrome, and those who are carriers for FX. Interesting fact: As the most common inherited single gene cause of autism, Fragile X is the best key we have to solving autism. Treatments for Fragile X are also likely to help people who have Alzheimer’s or other brain disorders. WA puts on a fabulous show, with landmarks in Perth and the regional cities lighting up orange for FX. This year you may see images around the city including Optus Stadium, Elizabeth Quay, Matagarup Bridge, Council House, the Fremantle Prison gates, and a number of regional landmarks illuminating.

Calling all Writers - Dulcie Stone Writer’s Competition is now open for people 18 years and over with intellectual disability. This year, the competition is open to anyone over 18 with an intellectual disability. The theme is Dreaming. The writing competition closes on Monday 2 September 2024. Our "Behaviour" webpage is here to support you if you have a loved one with challenging behaviour. The information and resources provided here emphasise that such behaviours are often a form of communication, indicating unmet needs or distress. By recognising these behaviours as communication attempts rather than mere misbehaviour, the page encourages a shift towards identifying and addressing underlying causes such as pain, sensory overload, or boredom. Perth Airport’s travel barriers online survey: they want to hear want to hear from people with disabilities or chronic health conditions (whether you travel by air or not), or the parent, guardian, or carer for someone with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Perth Airport will use your feedback to assess how accessible and inclusive they are as an airport and to identify opportunities to remove barriers to air travel. ACI will use the learnings from this survey to build a global survey programme shared with airport members. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. It is compatible with many screen readers. Make Decisions Real – Focus on Money Conversation Cards (Created by Inclusion Australia) Each set of conversation cards contains a total of 80 cards to help people with an intellectual disability learn about their rights and talk about what is important to them when making decisions about money. DDWA have several boxes of these conversation cards to give away to members for FREE. Free to pick up from our office (West Perth). Or we can post them to you for a small cost ($20).
