Following media news coverage on our loss of funding, we are having discussions with government departments to consider a range of potential options. We will not be resting until the ink is dry on a contract. You can view media coverage of our story to date here, along with a BIG THANK YOU letter to members and supporters for your advocacy to MPs. ➡️ #media #lobbying #advocacy #thankyou #support #funding

We had the opportunity to present at #XRAccess2024! This conference is very important to me, both personally and professionally, in terms of disability representation and advocacy. We had a chance to discuss the importance of accessibility of new technology for people in recovery, and how to situate that within the context of virtual reality. You can find the full poster in the "Featured" section of my LinkedIn!

Human Rights Advocacy Manager | Youth Disability Advocacy Service | YACVic | Proudly disabled & neurodivergent | Writer | Youth Worker | Advocate
Thank you Jessi & Cam for so generously sharing your stories, demonstrating just how important Independent Disability Advocacy Services, like our unique youth-specific one at YDAS, are for ensuring the human rights of disabled people are upheld. Yet our whole sector is critically underfunded. 1 in 2 who reach out for advocacy support across Australia, are turned away. Services like ours advocate for and with Australians with disability experiencing abuse, neglect, discrimination, rights violations and injustice. This includes those who experience these things in their interactions with all manner of Federal & State government funded systems and services, like the NDIA, Services Australia, Child Protection, Education and Health and many more. As Cam & Jessi describe, the value of advocacy support for individuals is so very meaningful, yet the funding received by the sector is tiny. In the wake of the Disability Royal Commission, we MUST get serious about upholding the human rights of disabled people. A key part of this is to ensure a robust and reliably funded independent disability advocacy sector so Australians with disability can have equitable access to a fair go. The recommendations of the Disability Royal Commission - which include increasing funding for advocacy - and the commitment of candidates to upholding disability rights will be front of mind when I cast my vote in the Dunkley byelection tomorrow. Join with us to call for the federal government to urgently increase funding for independent disability advocacy in this year’s budget. We’re joining other disability advocacy organisations within Australia to campaign for an increase in funding for these crucial services. Individual advocacy services like those we offer at YDAS (demonstrated in the video below) are desperately needed and chronically underfunded. Help strengthen the human rights of disabled young people by calling on the Federal government to adequately fund independent advocacy in this year's budget.
