This year's Aalto University graduating fashion class is overturning these misconceptions one collection at a time. According to research, FINDS is a necessary solution to fashion’s overstock problem👇 By interviewing experts and industry leaders on the topic, a study published by authors from Lund University gives a holistic overview of why brands destroy overstock, and what the potential solutions are. The solutions proposed tackle both upstream and downstream factors, and are a mix of regulatory, market-based, and informative interventions. Examples include: ➡️ Mandatory reporting on overstock volumes. ➡️ Minimum product standards. ➡️ Reduced taxes on labor for circular activities and donations. ➡️ Education about sustainable consumption and the impact of returns. But, one intervention stood out to us. And... ➡️ “Investment in digital platform for re-allocating surplus within the economy.” Does the last one ring a bell? Well, that’s because it’s exactly what FINDS is doing. ♻️ Our 360° digital platform optimizes and automizes the re-allocation of overstock to circular actors like off-price retailers, recyclers, and charities. The study shows that a multitude of actors need to take numerous coordinated actions to make a change. FINDS is one of those key actors, creating a market-based solution to the problem. Don't ruin your recent drops and releases because of your upcoming Summer Sales. June is a tricky month for many fashion brands, since it's a transitioning month between full-priced SS24 collection and the Summer Sales. So what can happen is people waiting for the prices to drop at the end of the month and buy at a discount. How do you prevent that? I would recommend 2 ways to avoid losing revenue during June. Nº1: Transparency If your newsletters are about products that won't be on sales, SAY IT. Add a small sentence saying "These products will not be part of our upcoming Summer Sales." Nº2: Offer a discount already If your newsletters are about products that will be on sales, just offer a discount code for people to get these already and secure their size. The fashion industry is facing enormous challenges, but with challenges come opportunities. After 15 years in the industry and many lessons learned from starting my own sustainable brand and consultancy firm, I've truly experienced both the hurdles and the potential for positive change. One of the biggest challenges is finding sustainable materials and ensuring that production is environmentally friendly. For example, the global market for organic cotton grew by 31% in 2020, reflecting a significant shift towards more sustainable raw materials, according to the Textile Exchange. It's not always easy, but by working closely with our suppliers and setting high standards, we can make a significant difference. Additionally, we need to get better at managing waste and overproduction. The fashion industry produces an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste annually, as reported by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Investing in recycling and creating circular business models is essential to reducing this waste. Transparency is another major issue; ensuring that materials are sourced responsibly requires a lot of effort and cooperation across the supply chain. Brands like Everlane, with their “Radical Transparency” campaign, show how detailed information about factory conditions and material sourcing can build consumer trust. The transportation of our products is also a significant challenge in terms of carbon emissions. The Global Fashion Agenda reports that transportation accounts for 10% of the fashion industry's carbon footprint. There's a lot we can do here to optimize and choose more eco-friendly options, such as carbon-neutral shipping methods. For me, sustainability in fashion is truly my passion. Running businesses that are not only successful but also good for the planet is what motivates me every day. I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and strong relationships within the industry and across industries. Building long-term relationships with suppliers who share our sustainability goals is key. 🗞 The 15th Annual Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen's iconic Concert Hall challenged attendees to move beyond presentations and into action. While some sessions felt like a retread of old ground, others offered fresh perspectives and a call to arms. On that note, I'm excited to share some interesting discoveries from the Summit. With a lens on Business & Technology, here are the things we are watching from the Global Fashion Agenda's GFS 2024. 🌿 We look at fresh ways of doing business as set forth by Ellen MacArthur Foundation The Fashion ReModel, collective financing in a partnership between The Fashion Pact Apparel Impact Institute DBS Bank on Future Supplier Initiative, and the gritty Collective Bargaining Agreement breaking new grounds in Cambodia on worker wages set into motion by IndustriALL Global Union 👏 💡 What's up in tech? We look at Worldly, helping brands get a better view of their value chain and prepare for better reporting, Hyran Technologies leveraging AI-powered tech with a mission to end oversupply, Hakio trying to revolutionise deman-forecasting model, as well. Reverse Resources aims to do more with textile waste and they're conquering the waste world quick. Now we have to act on this. We need to stop talking and start doing. As Edwin Keh put it: version 1.0 may not turn out perfect, it may be messy but at this stage action trumps perfection. We are all like mice that have decided that putting a bell on the cat is a good idea, we now need to work out how to do it! Systemic change needs to be driven from the inside out as well as from the outside in through legislation. Every individual, organisation and company has the power to make a change and to improve existing inefficiencies. You have the potential to reduce carbon emissions in the fashion industry by 20% - by acting as a conscious consumer.(1) Sometimes when discussing sustainability, the focus is on consumers to act. At other times, it seems like only companies can make a difference. But action from both is necessary for a circular economy. Our focus today is on what consumers can do. First, consumers can support and demand circular business models. This includes fashion rentals, re-commerce (i.e. secondhand), clothing swaps, and repair. Simple choices are also impactful, like using reusable shopping bags. This allows companies to cut back on their packaging and creates demand for recycled fibers, which are a major component of many reusable bags. Second, consumers can also support companies that engage in fair, more sustainable, and transparent practices. You can find these brands on @Good On You’s brand ratings(2). If your favorite brand has a poor rating, you can contact them and ask them to improve in specific areas. Brands want to know what their customers care about, so they are likely to listen. When possible, it’s best to purchase higher-quality items that will last longer. This can be expensive (though not always!(3)) and therefore not realistic for many people. In that case, check out the next suggestion. Third, consumers can care for their clothes in ways that will maximize their useful life, minimizing the need for replacement. Less frequent laundering is proven to extend the lifespan of cotton-based clothing, like jeans.(4) Washing half loads at below 30 degrees and choosing to air-dry clothes instead of using a tumble dryer are also beneficial. Over half of consumers’ potential to reduce fashion-related carbon emissions comes from reducing how often we wash and dry our clothes!(1) Finally, consumers choose how to discard clothes. Clothing put in the trash will be incinerated or landfilled. Many cities have separate collection systems for textiles. These systems can include municipal waste management, clothing collection containers hosted by charities or companies, in-store drop-off, etc. Clothes should be clean and dry when separated for collection. If you like diving deeper into sustainability and have concerns, you can research the organizations that collect clothes. Then consider the 10 R’s of the circular economy (see our posts from December). If the clothes are reused, whether close to home or abroad, that is more circular than breaking them down for recycling. Not all clothes can be reused (due to their quality or the demand for secondhand), so an option where clothes are sent for chemical upcycling into new fibers (like at eeden!) will be more circular than downgrading for other uses. And all of these options are more circular than landfilling or incineration! So how will you support a circular fashion economy? 💫 My career as a fashion designer started years ago by offering a made-to-measure service in Estonia. 💫    Over time, I’ve noticed that women feel their absolute best when wearing clothes made just for them. However, some women are still hesitant about custom clothing because it might be hard to imagine how it will look based on their measurements alone. So I decided to share more about Marimo’s made-to-measure service.     When starting to make a made-to-measure garment for you:  📍 We always begin with a consultation. It’s important for us to understand if you prefer more fitted garments or slightly looser fit. We ask for your preferences and take them into account when crafting the garment(s) for you.  📍 Secondly we take your measurements. For online orders we will help you with the measuring process and will consult you along the way to ensure the right measurements and the best possible fit!  📍 With a made-to-measure option, you can choose a custom color. Copenhagen Fashion Week is about to shake up the fashion landscape in 2025. The Denmark-based event just announced that it’s banning exotic animal skins and feathers. Its just-published 2025 sustainability requirements lay out the new rules. This decision comes after a litany of high-profile investigations by PETA entities showing the torment that animals endure in the exotic-skins and feather industries. A PETA Asia investigation into the Thai exotic-skins industry just revealed that thousands of snakes are cruelly confined and then bashed over the head with hammers and impaled with hooks while they’re still moving. The two python farms that PETA Asia’s investigators visited supply skins to Caravel, a tannery owned by fashion conglomerate Kering—the parent company of Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and other brands. We want to celebrate Copenhagen Fashion Week for raising the bar for other events by removing all exotic skins and feathers from its catwalks. This situation causes tons of textile waste which must be reduced. ⚖️ Sustainability Regulations: Authorities must regulate unsustainable practices to fight against them. For example, the EU planned the Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textile, emphasising designer responsibility and ecodesign requirements for durability and repairability.
