Nordic #fashion, particularly in Finland, requires a transformative new direction 🌠 that aligns with sustainability, #creativity, and meaningful career paths for young designers, addressing the disconnect between their values and the current commercial fashion system. A growing chasm exists between academia and the industry on how to best navigate #digitalization, #circulareconomy principles, and competition with fast fashion, all while tackling environmental and social problems. Evie Kivi, Maria Ervast, Risto Kirjonen, and Eveliina Lehtisalo offer 3 solutions to these challenges: 1️⃣. 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝: Let go of elitism, materialism and hiearchy to create a shared vision that prioritizes collaboration, activism, and transparency, inspired by success stories from the creative ecosystem. 2️⃣. 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: Universities, cities and companies should set up new platforms to display and exchange different views, uniting the artistic, the industrial, the young, and the established. 3️⃣. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: Integrate business and brand building skills into fashion education and provide more entrepreneurial support, including new funding instruments and partnerships. This will help elevate designers in the country they already live instead of forcing them to go work abroad. More ideas on promoting sustainability from an early age. A 8 years old child is a consumer: knows the product, the price, where to buy and recognises the ads. Do they know anything about how fashion industry impacts Earth resources, beginning with water? Another 20 minutes video from GFC Video Library. #consumerbehaviour #sustainfashion
GFC22 - NEW VIDEO - Hearts and Hands: An Ongoing Design Project for Responsible Fashion Consumption Dive into the transformative collaboration led by Rafaela Norogrando and Caroline Loss from the University of Beira Interior. This innovative project brings together Fashion Designers and elementary school students in Covilhã, Portugal, fostering knowledge exchange and awareness about fashion sustainability. 🤝 Collaborative Methodology: Utilizing participatory and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) methodologies, elementary school students and Fashion Designers join forces to express and explore their understanding of sustainability through the creation of a vibrant semantic panel. 🔄 Knowledge Exchange: In a unique twist, groups of students present their creations to one another, facilitating a rich exchange of perspectives. This dynamic interaction sparks a dialogue that transcends age and educational levels, nurturing a shared understanding of sustainable fashion. 👚 Closet Reflection: The initiative goes beyond the artistic realm as all students engage in a meaningful self-analysis of their consumption habits by reviewing their closets. This introspective step fosters a deeper connection to sustainable practices and mindful consumption. 🌟 Designer-Inspired Creations: The collaboration culminates in future designers crafting semestral works inspired by the mood boards and drawings co-created with the children. This beautiful fusion of perspectives results in innovative and sustainable fashion expressions. I like this photo from the panel "The future of the fashion designer - pitfalls and opportunities". This panel was a part of the #TransformationConference2024, organized by #ScandinavianMIND and #JuniCommunication within the framework of the #FashioninHelsinki events last week. This plant gives a nice visual metaphor for the desired future of the #fashionindustry: green, thriving, full of live and organic sophistication. However, from the many presentations that I listened to, it seems that the situation is far from that desired image at the moment: it's quite gloomy. ⚡ When asked to characterize Finnish fashion in three words, fashion designer #RolfEkroth responded, "lack of funding." He emphasized that while there are high expectations placed on designers, they do not have access to adequate resources. ⚡ Many young Finnish fashion designers feel lost in their careers. They would like to stay in Finland, but there are limited professional opportunities, and starting their own brand is too risky in the current environment. One potential solution is to organize collectives and work together. ⚡ Finland lacks industry professionals who can mentor and teach aspiring designers about career paths and how to manage a fashion house. ⚡ Fashion industry is a very harsh field for sensitive people. Gen Z values work-life balance and wants to bring more humanity into the business. They need to find their own way of working in this industry. All of these problems are systemic and persistent. Yet, there are always ways to overcome the hurdles. Perhaps it would be easy to see them if more success cases and growth spots were presented at the conference.

A few thoughts on the sale of Swedish Fashion Council by Svensk Handel to Lili Assefa: It’s concerning that an industry organisation falls in the hands of a private individual. The question becomes: will SFC even function as an industry organisation? Or will they lean into becoming an innovation hub – functioning as an incubator for avantgarde designers and organising Fashion X? The industry needs a unifying organisation. Let’s hope it will get one. More thoughts in my weekly column: https://lnkd.in/gf3HxJ65

I am a great fan of the #circulartextile 10'R -Strategy Framework! 🥳 On our FASHION360 tour we embark on the circular #10'R journey together TOMRA-textiles & Kezzler & Trimco Group. My part of the journey concerns itself on the R0,R1 and R2. These numbers always makes me think about R2-D2. But this is not about #starwars. 👨🎤👨🎤 ESG speak must become product development speak. In this equation the boring weight data becomes so important. Not the weight before bikini season. But the weight of the garment or footwear, the weight of each part of the product, and the weight of each fabric of each part of the garment. The weight data collection has become a burden, instead of a tool to environmental and #EPR- savings decisions. #AGEC offers real #textileEPR savings- when recycled content by weight can be proven. In our FASHION360 tour I address weight among other tools within the R0R1R2 strategies! See you there! CONNECTING THE DOTS: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN FASHION AND SOCIETY Last week, we celebrated Helsinki Fashion Week, where I was honoured to work as the head of marketing as well as the closing model. Four days, twelve designers, 50 models, hundreds of visitors- success. Couldn't have done it without the dream team: Aini Husain, Saga Weissmann, Emmi Sainio, Sofia Kostjukova 🖤 This year's theme was the connection between fashion and society. Even tho my main focus is on the luxury industry, and especially luxury (fashion) marketing, fashion and it's connection to society is something I have always been i nterested in and hence decided to do my minor in Fashion Management. During this minor study I spent a lot of hours studying the topic- not only the relationship, but also the tensions between the fashion industry and our society. The fashion industry and our society change, evolve, are disrupted daily- making it crucial for us in the industry to constantly educate ourselves further. Fashion is a reflection of what is happening in real life. The actions and thoughts of individuals have an increasing impact on today’s fashion industry, and social changes on a community level can be recognized on the runways of fashion weeks. What does this mean for the future of fashion? Helsinki Fashion Week 2023 focused on the growing interconnectedness within the industry. By reducing the gap between digital and physical fashion and by reacting more clearly to sustainability demands from consumer communities, this interconnectivity will bring fashion closer to the consumer. Best, Emma 🃏
