AI's Double-Edged Sword in Fashion... Promoting Diversity or Diminishing Human Models? The integration of AI-generated models in the fashion industry is sparking a heated debate. Proponents argue that AI models promote inclusivity and reduce fashion waste by allowing consumers to see clothing on a variety of body types and demographics. This technological shift is not just about cutting costs but enhancing consumer engagement and potentially reducing returns, which is a win for both the environment and the bottom line. However, there's a significant downside. Critics worry that digital models could eventually sideline human models, particularly those from underrepresented groups. There's also a risk that brands might use AI as a shortcut to claim diversity without actually employing diverse human models, thus undermining genuine inclusivity efforts. This concern is highlighted by incidents where models feel used or misled into contributing to AI model training without proper consent or compensation, reflecting broader issues of transparency and ethical practice in the use of AI. Despite these challenges, there are examples of AI being used to complement rather than replace human models.
