"Wastra" means fabric while "nusantara" means the archipelago or in this case the nation. It is the collective term for Indonesia’s ethnic or traditional fabric such as batik, tenun, songket, and kain endek. Batik and Tenun has been inseparable parts of Indonesia’s life. From casual lounge dress (daster) worn by housewives, batik for school and office uniform, to the traditional ulos scarf, these items are in the DNA of every Indonesian. Once exclusively used for royalty and ceremonial purposes, modern day wastra are now synonymous with formality and nationalism. Tailored batik shirt for male has been the basic formal norm in Indonesia as it signifies dignity, maturity, elegance, and power. For the women, the options are broader with batik dresses, wastra wrapped skirts (usually batik or tenun), or any fabric accessories. Read about the revival of the Indonesian Wastra with a modern spin. #indonesia #fashion #craftsrevival

Megan Doyle, writes for Vogue Business: "The BBC found children as young as five picking jasmine from 3am in Shubra Beloula El-Sakhaweya, a small village almost 100km north of Cairo, that is responsible for producing 75 per cent of Egypt’s jasmine. The children featured in Perfume’s Dark Secret suffer from injuries and allergies caused by pollen, impacting their academic performance and causing potentially lasting health impacts. The main culprits, according to the investigation team, are beauty industry conglomerates at the top of the value chain, which are being accused of setting the low prices leading to child labour abuses in their supply chains. Parents feel forced to include their children in harvesting to compensate for the low price of jasmine, in addition to rampant inflation and the weak Egyptian pound." #luxury #beautyindustry #childlabour

🗞 The 15th Annual Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen's iconic Concert Hall challenged attendees to move beyond presentations and into action. While some sessions felt like a retread of old ground, others offered fresh perspectives and a call to arms. On that note, I'm excited to share some interesting discoveries from the Summit. With a lens on Business & Technology, here are the things we are watching from the Global Fashion Agenda's GFS 2024. 🌿 We look at fresh ways of doing business as set forth by Ellen MacArthur Foundation The Fashion ReModel, collective financing in a partnership between The Fashion Pact Apparel Impact Institute DBS Bank on Future Supplier Initiative, and the gritty Collective Bargaining Agreement breaking new grounds in Cambodia on worker wages set into motion by IndustriALL Global Union 👏 💡 What's up in tech? We look at Worldly, helping brands get a better view of their value chain and prepare for better reporting, Hyran Technologies leveraging AI-powered tech with a mission to end oversupply, Hakio trying to revolutionise deman-forecasting model, as well. Reverse Resources aims to do more with textile waste and they're conquering the waste world quick. Lastly, we look at regenerative textiles from the lens of Bloom Labs and Modern Meadow. 👗 Hope you enjoy - do share your thoughts! 📩 #globalfashionsummit #sustainablefashion #businessmodels #tech

#MothersDay is a good day to reimagine a world where maternity doesn't act as a career hindrance for women. Case in point India's declining women workforce participation of which maternity break is a significant contributor. In 2017, the central government amended the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961 to increase the period of maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks for women with fewer than two surviving children. Women with two or more surviving children continue to be entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave. The amendment also provides 12 weeks' leave to women who adopt children under the age of three months or women who have children through surrogacy. Employers with 50 or more employees are also required to provide daycare facilities to women returning to work following maternity leave. The amendment allows women to work from home if the nature of their work permits under the terms and conditions agreed to by the employer and the employee. Despite these provisions, women’s participation in the labour force in India was as low as 22% in 2017–18 but increased gradually to 31.7% during 2021–22, as reported by the Periodic Labour Force Survey. However, the increase is attributed to a rise in self-employment, which remains least protected by labour legislation. Gender gaps in labour market participation, women’s early exit from the labour market, and their excessive participation in unpaid and care duties are big challenges that need to be addressed from a larger policy perspective towards improving female labour force participation. But how far these issues are addressed in the new labour codes remains a larger question that requires serious attention. #mothersday #maternity #labourcode #india #womenatwork

Freshly-minted brand-storytelling lessons | AHLUWALIA We're exploring ways in which brands can tap into books/publishing to offer a deeper perspective and cultural ethos of the brand and add another element of engaging with their audiences. While several brands tapped into book launches to talk about their creative process, products, inspirations and highlight their craftsmanship, Ahluwalia's book Jalebi goes a layer deeper. Jalebi, which in Hindi means an Indian sweet dish made of flour that is fried and dipped in sugar syrup, is also the name of her book. Books are also art. Jalebi is a conversation about the core of Ahluwalia : her Indian-Nigerian heritage and growing up in Britain. Mixing family portraits with scenes from Southall, London, Ahluwalia's book is reminiscent of her clothes, a blend of cultures, colours, masculinity and femininity.
