Fashion is often separated from all other art forms. Closely associated with its capitalistic purpose, clothing as a medium is often stripped of any artistic significance. This year's Aalto University graduating fashion class is overturning these misconceptions one collection at a time. Both the BA and MA graduate classes share a common thread: the use of garments as a means of self-expression. Discover their collections and sketchbooks:

Final Thesis Project by Giorgia Proietti CO-EXISTENCE | Three year course Fashion Design This final project delves into the ancient and intriguing concept that the human mind can contain more than one self, focusing on the theme of duality in human identity. It explores the idea of the "double" as an unreal reflection seen in a mirror, where the image is altered, blending reality with illusion and visually splitting into real and unreal halves. This philosophical exploration serves as the inspiration for a womenswear collection that translates these dualities into fashion. The collection uses prints and fabrics with contrasting colors to highlight the division and interaction between the real and the unreal. By integrating the concept of physical doubles, such as look-alikes and twins, the garments challenge perceptions of individuality and sameness, weaving both aesthetic and conceptual elements of duality and identity. This approach allows the project to not only capture the complexity of human existence but also to showcase how profound ideas can dramatically shape cutting-edge fashion design, turning philosophical concepts into tangible, incredible masterpieces. #istitutosecoli #wemakefashion #FinalThesisProject #FashionDesign #FashionMasterpieces #fashioncareer

* Fashion's Timeless Foundations: Balance of Basics and Innovation in Design * Reflecting again on my career, one concept remains important: mastering the basics is crucial. In a world that craves innovation, there's power in perfecting fundamentals as the foundation for one's skillset. Fashion trends are fleeting, but fundamentals endure. Whether understanding fabric nuances, honing draping skills, or appreciating color theory, these basics are the designer's bedrock. The fashion industry demands innovation, but it can be fleeting without a solid grasp of the basics. My "aha" moment came early when I witnessed a mentor and teacher blend abstract concepts with a deep appreciation of traditional, educated construction techniques, revealing true innovation's roots in mastering fundamentals. Designers' growth ties to embracing essentials and integrating trends into a strong foundation. This synthesis breeds a unique, tradition-rooted style propelled by a forward-thinking vision. Balancing tradition and innovation ensures sustained success in fashion, where the only constant is change. My journey taught me that celebrated designers harmonize boundary-pushing with deep craftsmanship respect. Navigating fashion's currents, remember the enduring value of perfecting fundamentals. It's not a step back but a strategic move forward, a solid ground for creativity to soar. Initially, I chased revolutionary designs. Experience revealed the foundation's sustaining power amid fashion changes. Let us celebrate growth, unwavering craftsmanship, and mastery of timeless basics. #FashionDesign #Innovation #fundamentals #FashionInsights

Highly recommend to read below article
Last month, I was in Vienna to interview Craig Green for the Financial Times about his latest career twist: the role of professor for fashion design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, a post that has previously been held by so many greats including Raf Simons, Jil Sander and Vivienne Westwood. It was great to see Craig in this classroom setting where his innovative imagination coupled with his practical realism seems ideally suited. He also knows how to set up and run an independent label, no mean feat in the current erratic fashion climate. I think Craig is one of the most believable, grounded designers working today, and I’m always impressed by his work ethic and love for collaboration. The team in Vienna were exceptionally welcoming, warm, engaging, and it was really fantastic to have the opportunity to talk in depth with the students about their work. I left wanting more... below is the online link. Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

#Minimalist style clothing originated from the early 20th-century modernist movement, where artists and designers began emphasizing the ideals of simplicity, practicality, and functionality. This design philosophy was also applied to fashion, as people started seeking clothing #styles that were simple, elegant, comfortable, and practical. Classics never fade away, and in recent years, #popular trends such as "old money" and "clean fit" bear the influence of minimalist style. Regardless of how #fashion trends may change, minimalist style remains an integral part of the fashion world, always in demand. #clothing #garment #fashion #fashiondesign #appeal #manufacturing #clothingmanufacturing #design #particular #art #classic #trend #change #minimalism #simple #elegant #comfortable
