I am extremely disappointed with my stay here in the Dominican Republic. I really wanted to love this place, but it was a huge disappointment. Upon landing in the Dominican Republic we were approached by various individuals at the airport who bothered my partner and I to purchase various excursions. Our nightmare started with the airport concierge escorting us to the reservations desk. Not being a native of DR we believed we were being taken to the transportation center but, instead was introduced to Edwin Ulloa from Club Ancora. Edwin was a fast-speaking native who was a Fraud. He acted like he was assisting us but, instead sold us something that we never agreed on purchasing.
My partner and I had decided on an excursion that Edwin offered that was $120 U.S. Dollars. A boat excursion to Isla Saona and riding Boogies. We initially told Edwin we needed some time to think about what he was offering and we would get back to him. Edwin insisted that if we purchase the trip now while we were at the airport we would get the best deal and we would not be able to re-enter after exiting the airport. Edwin Ulloa is a wolf in sheep clothing.
We then board a small bus that takes us to Dreams Hotel and Resort. Upon exiting the bus a hotel representative informs us our room was not ready and needed to be cleaned. The hotel staff instructed us to have a seat and they would be with us shortly. A hotel representative then quickly approaches us with a 20-minute speech regarding the resort amenities, attending a “breakfast” to receive discount coupons, etc. Turns out the whole thing was a travel rewards club membership and they wanted us to sit through an 1.5 hour long timeshare presentation. We informed the hotel representative that we were not interested in any timeshare. The representative adamantly set up a "breakfast" for us to provide discount coupons and told us we would get the $120 back that we gave Edwin. We chose to attend this "breakfast", because we were told by Freddie a Dreams Royal Beach representative that he would make things right and give us back the $120 if we attended the breakfast. We asked 3 times will we receive U.S cash he insisted yes.
Fast forward 3 hours of aggravation and sales pitches and sweating with no air conditioning. We were given the run-around and no cash money back. Just Hotel money which needed to be used at Dreams. BEWARE of all the hotel representatives are working together to sell their Timeshare and scam you for more money.
In addition, the cleaning staff walked into our room numerous times unannounced. I was on the balcony when I was stunned by a cleaning woman knocking on my sliding door asking if I needed anything. She just walked in. Who knows how long she was in our room. Our last night we had items discarded from our room that were left on the bed. When complained to the front desk about it, first we were told that our money would be reimbursed then I was told that a report needed to be filed so they can investigate. Nothing was going to be done.
The food was bland. The buffet was boring, there were hardly any native dishes. The pasta sauce tasted as it came out of a can. Had fruits and enough salad but we didn’t pay all this money for unlimited fruits and salad. Breakfast was horrible. Thankfully they had the omelet station but they didn’t refill the fillings often so most of the time they were scraping the bottom. Same with the pancake batter. The only restaurant that was decent was the Fushion Asian restaurant.
Overall it was an Awful experience!!! Would never recommend or go back to Dreams Royal Beach Resort in Punta Cana.
The best part was meeting Miguel from A-1 Gift Shop down the beach from Dreams. He was honest, helpful, and respectful. Recommend getting your excursions and souvenirs from him.

Dear 796designb,

Thank you for selecting our hotel for your holidays and disclose your impressions. Let me begin by apologizing that your experience was under the standards you expected. It is a shame that your experience was affected by the inconvenience at your arrival at the airport, and which is not related to us.

I lament the misunderstanding about the coupons, and I will feedback to the team from the vacation club. When it comes to housekeeping, allow me to mention that, unless there is a do not disturb sign on the door, our housekeeper nocks the door several times before accessing to clean the room. It is for this cause that we recommend keeping the do not disturb sign in case you desire to prevent our staff from entering the room.

We are sorry if our gastronomy was not up to the standards you expected. Please, be certain, we will address your remarks with our Food and Beverage.

Best regards,

Vythalis Muñoz

The experience was amazing. It was my birthday & I lost my passport. Everyone was so nice & reassuring. Everything was clean & pretty. The atmosphere was great as well. I enjoyed the night club & Secrets & all of the shows. The bartender @ the bar where the stage is, Risel was very nice & accommodating. The gift shop lady Katherine sang happy birthday to me & all. The only thing I did not like was there is no smoking section & the food could have been better.

Check in was easy. We did not do preferred and never felt we needed it. Our room was clean and stocked daily.
Beds and pillows were comfortable. We had a room that ended up being close to the pool, beach and World Cafe on the lobby level. Great location! We were there 7 nights and enjoyed 5 out of 7 of the shows. Didn't care for the Dominican show or Madonna show. They have a gift shop close to the lobby which has a variety of everything. The people selling things on the beach never bothered us. Gorgeous beach and gorgeous hotel grounds. Every day we would look for the Sundial which had all the activities listed. You can get that near the Oceans restaurant posted on the wall or a paper copy from the concierge. The staff made our stay. Big shout out to our favorite activity team member Jesus, he was such a vibrant guy and we had so much fun, he really made our day so much fun! We enjoyed Yira from the World Cafe she always started our day with a beautiful smile and wonderful conversation. We looked forward to seeing Robert each evening at the interlude bar. He was a blast and incredibly efficient helping guests when it was busy. I rated this a 4 due to the food and all the little kids running around the shows near the bar late at night. The beach was stunning. The Secrets Spa by Pevonia was top notch. Excellent experience!

I was so excited to write this review because I honestly read reviews for MONTHS before we decided on a Caribbean resort for our family trip. We just got home yesterday, traveled 11/16-11/22. The resort didnt feel crowded at all, even before the holiday. I can honestly say this was the best family vacation we have ever taken. Dreams Royal was amazing--so clean, rooms were spacious and perfect for families. The staff were so kind, every day, every interaction. Our butler was Junior--and he MADE the trip for our kids. Showed us around, helped us with a dinner reservation (only 2 restaurants require one), helped us order pizzas for the kids at night even though it wasnt on the room service menu, checked in on us daily. Left treats for the kids. He was just there to help us with anything we needed. We arent a family who is used to people waiting on us at all--but he was so helpful. We felt like we had someone to ask questions to at any time. Your butler will communicate with you via Whatsapp so we added that once we arrived and he had us just scan a quick QR code and we were connected. He even texted us today to ask how our flights home were :).
Many of the staff live there at the resort for 11-12 days then go home for a few days. So when you feel they are there for you 24/7, they really are. The kids/teen lounge was so fun at night. Eliza who works in there was really energetic and helped the kids set up their games. Our favorite food was Porotfino-pizza and pasta. Highly recommend renting a cabana on the beach one day (2 levels, you have wait service for food and drinks, beautiful views!) Things I wish I knew before going: you can wait to book excursions until you arrive. The Amstar rep on site was able to explain more about our options so we chose 2 outings that fit our family. We highly recommend taking them up on the free transport to the shopping center also. We were nervous about this-didnt want to end up someplace that didnt feel safe. This was a great set up--a bus takes you there, you walk around a secure area, visiting a coffee shop, chocolate (free tastes!), rum and a huge souvenir shop. When you're done, the staff there call your Amstar rep to come get you. We felt very safe and this gave our kids time to shop with their money. No one was pushy at all, great environment and free to get there. We stayed in a swim up preferred room which was worth every penny with our kids (age 10 and 13). They could jump right in the pool every morning while we had coffee. The grounds are stunning--the photos online dont do it justice. I could type for days about how amazing our trip was. The seaweed that many people posted about wasnt an issue AT ALL. Its the ocean, there is seaweed. They rake and mower it all day, didnt even notice it. The beach itself is beautiful and clean. We also noticed lost of Dreams staff monitoring the beaches also since they are public, which made us feel safe. Many reviews said the people selling stuff on the beach was annoying. It can be, but they arent mean people at all. We said "no thank you" and they moved on. We also bought some great kids treasures from them (its literally the same jewelry was the gift shop lol) My dtr also got her hair braided which she was excited about. The vendors were kind to our kids and it wasnt an issue at all. This is common in other countries so it was a good lesson for our kids in how we treat people--just be nice. The pools close at 7p which we did feel was early but it does support the fact that they are a family friendly atmosphere-no spring breakers allowed. No loud parties until all hours. Shows in the main area were fun at night too. Lots of music and kid friendly.

We will definitely be back to Dreams--100%. Their service and commitment to cleanliness is unmatched. They truly make you feel like family....and they call you "mi familia" the whole time you are there.

The good….

- The Entertainment team single handedly elevated the entire stay - they kept everyone entertained, always smiling, caring and kept our 20 month old entertained. Spaghetti, Keyby, Black Coffee, JR & Eliza all provided exceptional service and quite honestly made the experience one to remember! During the day, there were multiple activities to keep guest entertained, enabling everyone to get involved and have fun!

- The bar staff at the poor bar (William & Albel) were brilliant. After our first day, they remembered orders and would make sure our glasses were never empty! Pilar at the world cafe/fusion was also brilliant!

- The pools were clean, the perfect temperature and the lazy river was very impressive.

- The hotel grounds were impeccably well kept
- Billy our butler went above and beyond to ensure our stay was pleasant and stress free. From booking restaurant sittings, procuring fresh fruit for our young son and also organising special touches in the room etc, he made the stay feel extra special.

- Previous reviews bare reference to staff expecting tips… This is totally incorrect! The staff provided absolutely phenomenal service from start to finish, never once pushing for, nor expecting tips. The level of service in this resort cant be faulted - I would recommend taking some USD with you in small denominations to allow you to tip should you feel inclined, as I feel the staff definitely deserve recognition!

The Bad…

- The food was far below the standard I would expect from a five star hotel. The a la carte options were very limited. Given that we were only on the resort for seven nights, we found ourselves bored of the food by night 3. A common theme was that the food was often heavily salted and had very little other flavour. For those who like spicy/fragrant foods, you will likely be disappointed. Oceana was also closed for 2 nights during our stay and the seaside grill closed for a private function on one of the evenings, meaning an already restricted selection was further limited.

- Emphasis is placed on the perks of a Preferred club upgrade. All be it the butler service was great, it is obvious that those not in the preferred club took advantage of drinks upgrades and use of reserved beach areas without their status being queried. On multiple occasions, when speaking to other guests staying at the hotel without upgrade, they still were able to make use of the ‘“enhanced facilties” without having paid for the upgrade.

- On many occasions, most likely due to high volumes of guests dinning simultaneously, drinks orders were either totally forgotten or would take an absurd amount of time.

- Although not necessarily a negative, the beach is very prone to seaweed - this was regularly cleaned by tractor meaning the beachfront itself appeared visibly clear but there was still a fair amount present in the water, not ideal for those who prefer to swim in the sea.

- The draught beer on 4 occasions, twice served at world cafe and twice served on the beach in the preferred club area was rotten/spoiled. The beer had a distinct eggy/sulphurous smell and tasted very bad. Fortunately on each occasion, this was noticed immediately as the smell was so overpowering before a sip had been taken. This issue never occurred at the sea legs bar, the sports bar nor the bar serving the plaza/infinity pool so it seems that whichever bar serves the two impacted areas either has compromised pipes/equipment or the barrel was off.

- The selection of spirits were also fairly limited. Given that we were in the preferred club, the locations of the bars offering “premium spirits” felt as thought they were deliberately positioned in the most inconvenient areas to minimise consumption force guests to use the non premium bars. The lobby bar was too far from any other points of interest meaning it was only visited on arrival whilst checking in and also on departure when checking out. The preferred club bar at the seaside grill also closed before dinner service meaning anyone wishing to have a premium drink was more often than not able to be served their preferred beverage. The final premium bar was poorly signposted meaning the majority of guests were probably not even aware where it was located/ had such limited seating that only aprox 8-10 people could sit in the area at once. The selection of non local premium spirits were poor in comparison to similar “premium” all inclusive resorts we have previously visited in the Caribbean and around the world.

- The resort only serves 3 house wines (red/white/rose) each of questionable quality as part of the all inclusive offering. There is the ability to purchase better options/a bottle from a specific wine menu, however this is disappointing when compared to other resorts who usually offer at least one or two options of red or white as part of their standard packages.

- The price of items in the poolside shop and the gift shop were extortionate. I appreciate that all inclusive resorts stores tend to be more expensive than local shops and malls, however the prices were eye watering for the most basic items.

- The hotel has a major issue with guests placing towels on poolside chairs to reserve seats even when not in use. Before 8am, almost every single seat was “reserved” with the vast majority not occupied until hours later. All though there are signs advising that this would be monitored and items removed to prevent it from occurring, at no point during our stay did we witness this being enforced.

- The rooms all though spacious and clean were very dated, with scuff marks present on most surfaces, broken drawers, chipped edges and general major signs of wear and tear. Again in comparison to other 5 star inclusive resorts we have previously visited in the Caribbean, this hotel does require refurbishment and degree of modernisation.

- The quality of the wifi apart from within each bedroom and also in the lobby was subpar. On multiple occasions, wifi would not be available. In any five star establishment, stable and resort wide wifi would be a reasonable expectation.

On reflection, the stay although pleasant was underwhelming. I would definitely recommend this hotel for young families traveling with children, however if looking for a high end or luxury break, this may not be the place to stay.

Thank you very much for asking that important question, official excursion agencies, that are located in our hotel accept Credit Cards, however, there are some locals selling excursions on the beach, and they do not accept credit cards, just for purchasing our internet service is necessary cash. and we do have an ATM at the hotel.
