From my experience, I would say the main positive side of this hotel was the staff. I was very surprised with how every single person was very friendly and available to make your stay the best possible experience with a smile on their faces. To be honest, this was the best staff experience I’ve seen in a hotel.
Big shout out to Marcos at the pool bar, aways so kind, funny, available and proactive. He deserves a promotion! Also loved the experience provided by Thomas and Pamela at Portofino restaurant. But these are just a couple of names, literally everybody there deserves a recognition, from the restaurant to the amazing housekeeping staff. Brilliant hardworking people.
The hotel infrastructure is nice. It’s not a fancy hotel (which you will most likely find at Secrets next door), but it’s good. It’s always VERY very clean and the service to make the beach also clean is amazing. It was by far the hotel with the smallest number of seaweed I saw in the area.
The pools could be open until later (7pm was just too early) and it doesn’t make any sense closing the pool bar before the pool closes.
Huge disappointment that the swim up bars were closed. It uses covid as an excuse but it looks more like budget restrictions. If everyone is walking everywhere at the hotel without face masks (and nobody asks you to do so), and if there is night entertainment with bigger crowds without masks, why do you make people leave the pool to get their drinks? Doesn’t make any sense.
However, I think our biggest disappointment was the food. You won’t find any snacks to eat by the pool or beach during the day besides burgers, hot dogs, chicken and nachos offered at the beach bar with absolutely no variation every day. Forget about seafood by the sea. I’ve been to several all inclusive hotels, and this was the first one that didn’t give much attention to the pool/beach afternoon food experience.
The main buffet restaurant was closed for multiple days (half of our stay) for dinner. I also felt it was a small buffet compared to other all inclusive hotels “main restaurants”. It felt short of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner (when opened), with little variation from a day to another.
The other restaurants were just ok. Oceana, “the fanciest one”, was by far the worst. The grill had a good meat. Portofino, the Italian one, was good, even though they lack pizza options at night (not even pepperoni they had for dinner).
All deserts we terrible.
Most of the drinks felt very sweet and tasted like they mixed water in the alcohol. Even the beer felt watery.
Another positive side: the club at Secrets was open and available for Dreams guests… very nice! The night entertainment is also great - big shout out to the Madonna experience and that incredible singer, she's a star. Go watch the shows at Secrets because it has a better structure and funnier crowd. Again, no face masks required at the crowd in the shows or club, so no excuses for swim up bars to be closed.
We paid for the Preferred Club service and I’m not sure we would pay for it again. Premium building location closer to the beach is nice and handy. Butler service is good, our butler Billy was very approachable on WhatsApp and sent us bottles of champaign almost every day. He also helped us with restaurant reservations, which I believe would be handy in busy travel dates. But that’s it. They say you have exclusive pool and exclusive beach areas, but there’s absolutely no control over it. Anyone can use these parts of the hotel. “Exclusive” lunch at the Grill restaurant wasn’t worth it. And the app said they had tapas until 6pm but in all days they told us they didn’t have anything else by 3:30pm.
In the end, because of the amazing people working at the hotel, I would say I would probably try again another AM resort - probably Secrets. I wouldn’t go back to Dreams Royal Beach mainly because of the food and drink options, nor pay for the Preferred Club upgrade again.
We had a good time because of the amazing staff of the hotel and the good hotel pools and amazing beach. But it could've been much better if food & drinks were better, with more options and more premium.
