My husband and I stayed at the Dreams Royal Beach resort in Punta Cana from October 13 through October 24, 2021. Overall, we rate our stay as 5 Stars. While there were a number of issues we encountered during our time there, the reason for the high rating is due to the staff. They were exceptional in their attitude and service and went out of their way to ensure we have the time of our lives. Here is how we rate each experience we had at the resort.

Resort
The facility is beautiful and well maintained. All the tropical vegetation gives the feel of being in the jungle and not on a resort. The grounds crew and maintenance staff do an exceptional job of keeping the facility clean. Along with that, the management takes COVID precautions very seriously and they have protocols in place to ensure the safety of their guests. All staff are masked, even those poor souls who work outside, the rooms are sanitized, and there is hand sanitizer available everywhere. Upon arrival, COVID testing required to fly home is scheduled and the results are provided to you the same day.

Food
Keep in mind that you don’t go to an all-inclusive resort for the food. With that in mind, the offerings at the five restaurants were hit and miss, and in some restaurants, very limited. The buffet was small and had a limited selection, and the quality seemed to vary depending on the day. A reservation is required for the “show” at Fusion, and it was underwhelming. Oceana seafood was very good, and the portions were just enough to whet your appetite. We had different experiences at Portofino Italian each time we went. One time the quality of the food was good, the next it was not. The worst quality food was at the Tides Seaside Grill. It never seemed fresh, and it was always cold. All the other guests we talked to who ate there had similar experiences. Our favorite place was the Seaside Grill. It was our go-to place for breakfast and dinner. Here the quality of the food was consistent and the view of the beach in the morning added to the experience.

As I have a gluten allergy, food options to say the least were very limited. Menus for each venue did identify what was vegan or gluten free, and the staff went out of their way to explain what meals could be prepared gluten free. The one place this wasn’t done was at the buffet. It would be helpful if an allergen symbol could be added to each food label on the buffet. This would help guest immeasurably.

Beach
In a word, beautiful. White sands and clear waters, what is not to love. There were always staff on hand to keep the sands free of seaweed. There are lots of sun shelters if you need them and plenty of lounges to enjoy the sun. Unlike at other resorts, however, there was no enforcement at the preferred beach to ensure it was limited to just preferred guests. One drawback was the number of licensed and unlicensed vendors. The constant stream of licensed vendors seemed to roam the resort freely. Unlicensed vendors waited near the water almost daring you to set foot off resort property. When you did, they were very aggressive in asking you to come to their shops or purchase one of their excursions. There were times they would yell to us while we were on the resort or when we were in the water.

Entertainment
The evening entertainment was a lot of fun. Each night there was a different show. From musicals and magic shows to the circus. The resort did a good job of mixing it up. And before each show, the start time was 9:30 PM, there was some type of audience participation activity. My only complaint is that it wasn’t always clear when other events were happening during the day. A notice was placed outside of the restaurants, but that was it. For me, it was too high and the print too small for me to read. Doing a better job of letting guests know what is going on around the resort would help.

Staff
I saved the best for last. As I mentioned, each employee of the resort we encountered went out of their way to make our stay memorable. However, there are a number of individuals who need to be specifically recognized for their exemplary service.

Marcelo – Our time at the resort would not have been what it was without him. As butlers go, he was the best. Always anticipating our needs, he got us reservations when we needed them, invited us to a special managers dinner, and had an anniversary cake sent to our room.

Wilkens – Our waiter at Portofino, Wilkens met every request with a smile. He ensured I had a tasty gluten free meal.

Cruz – Besides making us tasty drinks at the infinity pool bar, Cruz took the time to teach us about Dominican culture and the best way to make Mamajuana.

Cesar – We saw him every morning for breakfast at the Seaside Grill and he was a delight. Cesar ensured all my meals were prepared gluten free and presented me every morning, even without asking, a plate of gluten free toast. Cesar even helped my husband with his poor Spanish-speaking skills, which was a lot of fun.

Raul – This man always had a smile on his face and greeted us each time we saw him like we were long lost friends. I looked forward to seeing him because his excitement was infectious.

Yasmeiry – Possibly the most delightful person on the entire resort, we can’t sing her praises enough. Always happy to see us, she was extremely attentive and made each meal at the Seaside Grill a pleasure. And she made the best mimosas. As she explained with a smile, the juice is only needed to add a bit of color!

Josefa – On most nights, she was our bartender during the evening entertainment. Our drinks always appeared before we asked for them and she was ready with an excellent suggestion whenever we asked.

Alexander – Since most of our time was spent on the beach, we really got to know Alexander. Hard working, dedicated to his guests, and one hell of a bartender. He was always on hand to ensure we had a fresh drink or to take food orders. When we weren’t sure what we wanted to drink he told us not to worry as he would prepare an “Alexander Special.” And they were very delicious. On our last day it was hard to say goodbye to him as it felt like we were saying goodbye to an old friend.

Excellent resort. Very good service and beautiful grounds. We were in a preferred swim out room. Martin was our Butler and always made sure we were enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed with excellent service. Robert, Ayafreisy, Oniel, Euclides, and Dolores at Theater bar were excellent and remembered our drinks by day 2. Nelson by the Main pool always searched us out and made sure our drinks were full. All of the staff was excellent. This is our 3rd resort in the DR and the best we have stayed at. The beach is large and spacious and never had trouble getting loungers. The seaweed was pretty bad, but has been a lot of the year. They work hard at cleaning it up. The only negative or caution is that some of the non-resort approved (white shirts} vendors on the beach tried to get our kids to their shops to buy weed. Don't do it as it is illegal in the DR and have heard bad things of the quality.

We have just got back from a 10 day stay at the Dreams Royal Beach with the whole family and what a wonderful experience.

Firstly the service is likely the best I have ever come across on all my travels. From check-in, to the concierge, housekeeping, bar staff and entertainment teams. I didn't know it was possible for people to smile so much! Nothing is ever too much and special mention must go to Mr Fantastic and Mr Coca Cola. Those guys are nuts (in a good way) and you can get involved in as much or as little as you want.

The rooms are beautifully appointed and huge. We had a standard deluxe (with an extra camper bed for our 9 year old) and it was as much space as we could ever need. The bed was very comfortable, shower was spot-on and we even had a jacuzzi bath on our balcony. Housekeeping kept the rooms spotless. Our WiFi was a bit patchy but seemed to work better in the second room for the older kids.

The swimming pool area is stunning and runs the length of the complex. There is space for those who like it quiet and for those who like to get more involved in the activities. The swim-up bars were lots of fun, as were the delicious cocktails on offer.

The beach is a few steps away and there are plenty of sun loungers on offer. The sea breeze makes this a good option in the midday sun. There is a bar there and a grill offering burgers, hot dogs etc.
We had a few days when the beach was invaded by lots of washed-up seaweed. Not a problem, the hotel had a plough to get rid of it. I have never seen that before. The foam party was another particular favourite...reliving the old magic!

The entertainment at night was excellent, with a very talented troupe who treated us to music, acrobatics and a wonderful Christmas show. Santa even paid a visit for the kids.

As far as the food is concerned, there was a full choice at breakfast with all the fresh fruit juices, hot and cold food you could need. My only real 'criticism' is that the buffet choices for lunch and dinner were far more limited than other all-inclusives we have experienced (predominantly in Greece, Turkey etc..)
There are a choice of other restaurants and we enjoyed the Hibachi Grill and Show at the Asian restaurant. I did not visit the Italian restaurant and heard mixed reviews, but to be honest, you don't go to the Caribbean for a Pizza!
The Seaside Grill was the other pick of the restaurants, although you may have to queue for that for a short while.

As a beer lover, the only choices were the local lager Presidente (or Dominican water as it is also called) and Coors Light. May I suggest a visit to the local Supermercado to pick up some alternative beverages if you are more a beer than a cocktail person.

On a few trips out, I saw some of the other resorts including the 'city' that is the Barcelo resort. It made me feel grateful I was staying at the Dreams Royal Beach. It is the perfect size and never ever felt too buys. The clientele were also lovely and we met some great people who we will keep in touch with.

I have no had a chance to talk about the Sports Bar, Arcade, Club Shops etc...(or the facilities next door at 'Secrets' that I did not get a chance to use)., but as with everywhere else, they were hosted by kind and friendly hotel staff.

I went on a solo trip to the capital Santa Domingo on a guided tour. This was arranged prior to us getting there and had nothing to do with the hotel. Most of it was an excuse to flog us stuff and was a real disappointment. If you want to go on any excursions I suggest you do lots of research in advance.

In summary...a holiday we will never forget...thanks so much Dreams Royal Beach!

What a great resort. The grounds are pristine, the rooms exceptionally clean, even the beach is raked several times a day (Not all resorts do this) Our room was serviced twice a day and with such attention to detail. The mini bar was kept stocked with soda, water, beer, candy & chips. We ate dinner at all 4 restaurant's on various nights and the food was excellent at all of them. In Fusion, Pedro is a very talented chef and made our meal so fun. The buffet is very good too with a large selection and custom eggs and omelets at breakfast. We had a preferred room overlooking the pool in bldg. 5. Marcello was our butler (think personal concierge) and he was a great help. He checked in with us every morning and made dinner reservations for us each night, helped us with check out, shopping trips, and just being a friend. Alexander kept us constantly supplied with water and drinks on the beach and was so fun to talk with. ALL the staff everywhere were so friendly and helpful I wish I could remember more names. At Oceana restaurant they even made me a special meal off the menu, twice. The entertainment staff were super. I don't know where JR gets his energy. There is a show each night with a pre-show that has audience participation that should not be missed. The beach has thatched palapas and palm trees to provide shade and they're are some palapas by the pool too. The independent vendors on the beach were friendly and did not harass you to buy from them, unlike we have dealt with in Mexico. We just had to say no once and they left us alone. But their prices were much better than the same items in some shops. We didn't want to leave and will be back.

The do a great job of taking care of all the little details and letting you just relax and enjoy. There were many different restaurants, snack shops etc so you didn’t feel that you were repeating the same experience. Our dedicated Jose was excellent and ensured that we got anything we needed or wanted.

Dear Jula A, Greetings from Now Larimar Punta Cana.Regarding to your question, five minutes driving from our hotel you can find some malls with bars and shops. Best regards,
Answer from Frances A
Yes there is what they call a mall on the beach just off of the resort. It is outdoors under huts. Then there is a really nice one down the beach , ( a nice easy walk away). This one is owned by a friendly Russian lady. Really good prices and no pushing to buy! We went to this one! There is a big shopping area within walking distance from the resort back towards Punta Cana! Some of our group went to this! There is also a couple of really nice shops right on the resort!

He was from Berón Taxi Turistico his name was Amborsio Santana ( 1-829-456-8596)..we had 3 people in our group

Is there anything nearby you can walk to safely? Other hotels/shops/bars or just further along the beach?
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic15 contributions24 helpful votes
Dear jod1125, As the beach is public, out of the area of the hotel there are restaurants, shops, bars and so others, but as we cannot guarantee the security of the people out of our property we recommend that if you want to get out of the property use taxis and be cautious about the places you visit.
