Let’s start with the good! Beach is absolutely gorgeous, sand is like powder. Resort is stunning. Staff is friendly and are really trying to make you happy. Beds are SO comfortable!!! You can order the type of pillows you want on the hyatt app (foam, feather, memory foam). We didn’t use this but wow! There is a very lazy lazy river through the resort but you have to bring your own float (so weird). We odered some on Amazon. They have a place to get them blown up by the towel hut. People complain about the pool/beach chairs being taken by sunrise but we had no problem getting 4 chairs after 8. There are also hammocks and bed type loungers. There are even more in the preferred area but we didn’t use them even though we had access. Our butler Billy was amazing. He knows people in all the right places and can get you whatever you need. He checked in with us every morning and afternoon. We didn’t have much need for a butler but he was always available to us. One day he left champagne and chocolate strawberries in our room, another wine with cheese and crackers. So thoughtful. We asked him to get our daughter gluten free pancakes one morning because we were unable to speak to any of the chefs. Billy took care of it 😀.
Ok now the bad.
Check in
When we arrived we were told the room we reserved months ago was unavailable. We had booked a preferred family junior suite and were told it would be in the new (quieter) building. We had our confirmation and had already paid for the room in full. No one had reached out before arrival to tell us our rooms would not be available. To make matters worse the female assistant manager (don’t know her name) escalated the situation with aggressive posture and tone. They should really teach their staff deescalation techniques. Hyatt customer service was unreachable. You are pretty much hung out to dry. We were told by the manager that after two night we would be able to move to the room we had reserved. On that move day they had the audacity to ask us to vacate one of the rooms early (11am) as a favour to them so they could flip it. We agreed to this and were told our new room would be ready at 4. Not surprisingly our room was not ready by 4 and was not in the new quieter area. There was also fresh blood on the bed.
Noise
We were in building 5 on the 1st floor. The noise all night from people returning from the bar/casino whooping and hollering is constant. You barely get any sleep. Bring ear plugs. When we moved it was to the 2nd floor which was still noisy (it’s next to the night time entertainment) but not as bad. There are also two extremely bright green flashing lights directly over the bed where your head is.
Food
Good and bad. I personally didn’t find the food bad. Repetitive yes but didn’t taste bad. The roast chicken was very good. The salmon at seaside grill was perfect. I enjoyed the coffee on the decks at worlds cafe or seaside grill every morning looking at the ocean. HOWEVER, if you are celiac stay away!!!!!! We chose Dreams after reading they are good with celiac. I tried to contact the resort twice to speak to someone in charge of food before our arrival but no response. My daughter was given an allergy card to present at each meal. It said in Spanish and English that she had an allergy to gluten. The card was completely pointless as the staff have little to zero knowledge about what needs someone with a gluten allergy requires. We were walked through the buffet and told what was gluten free and what was not but it was inaccurate information. For example the couscous was labeled GF, the bacon had bread in it to soak up the grease, gluten cake was in the gluten free bread area and labelled Gf. We tried asking for food from the back kitchen but finding someone to ask was difficult and explaining what we needed even more difficult. We had to explain every meal, every restaurant. Gluten noodles were mixed in with her gluten free pasta, she was given gluten desserts on two occasions, dessert was pretty non existent, fusion must have given her the wrong meal because she was super sick, only two of the restaurants had one gf free item on the menu. She got progressively more and more sick as the week went on. We were lucky to get her on the plane. Her week was a disaster, which of course ruined our vacation as well.
Activities
On paper there are activities and a teen club. In reality most of it doesn’t take place. She went to the activities many times to be disappointed nothing was there.
Dreams doesn’t provide the water sport equipment, it’s an excursion company trying to upsell you snorkeling etc. they have scub lessons in the pool. This consists of 1 tank for however many people show up (6 when we went) with no proper disinfecting of the mouthpiece. There is a kayak, sailboat and paddle board you can borrow and other stuff you can rent. We did go kayaking one day which was fun.
Vendors
There are vendors everywhere. They are allowed on the resort beach and even in the resort itself. Photographers, excursions ask you mutiple times a day if you want to book something.
Tipping
This all inclusive is the first one we have tipped at. Normally we go to Beaches or club med which workers are not allowed to accept tips. This means you must carry around cash. We didn’t mind tipping as the people are such hard workers and very nice. It didn’t make any difference to the service though. I could not get them to keep our room fridge stocked. We tipped every meal, housekeeping, fridge stocker, bag handler, bar service, room service and butler.
