Fast check in when we arrived. I had booked a family room and had emailed ahead of time to make sure there was 3 beds... the trip was my husband, I, our daughter 19, and her boyfriend. Bellman brought us up to our room. 2beds pushed together and a couch. He said I could call and they'd make the couch up to a bed. Called the desk, they said they'd send someone. We left to explore. Back to the room-not made up. Called again. Went to eat supper. Went to the lobby bar. I ran to the room... not made up. I went to the front desk. They said they'd take care of it. Waited. Went to the room. Still not done up. We had been up since 2am and were very tired at this point. Called again and finally someone came. Not a good start to the vacation.
The bathroom is very odd. An open doorway into shower, sink area. Door on toilet, but frosted glass shower door. Again, not good with daughter's boyfriend along. No separate shampoo just soap dispenser on shower wall. Didn't have a problem with the wall mounted blowdryer for once. It worked well. Terrible towels. Like using a thin floor rug. We had better beach towels occasionally.
The beach was beautiful. Nice sand, no rocks. Did see some stingrays but they didn't bother. The kids checked out boogie boards and had a great time. I bought a floatie cheap from the hut on the beach. Also a cute cover up.
We used the pool for a couple hours one day. My daughter cut her foot on the missing tile there. Lots of chairs saved not being used.
There were no waiters at the beach or pool so that was disappointing.
Not good food. We only ate at the buffet. I had stomach troubles 3days and my daughter was throwing up one day. We didn't drink the water. They are so short staffed. Our waiters Alonso and Karen worked so hard. Karen was almost running between tables. I wouldn't get my drink until I had finished eating. I would've gotten it myself if I knew where they kept the machines. I felt bad for them. Tipped them well.
Not much food available later in the evening. Just nasty sandwiches in the sports bar or nacho cheese from a machine. The guacamole at the restaurants was terrible. Smooth goo with no taste.
Best part about the trip was the beach and the friendly staff. Just wish they weren't so understaffed. I talked to the guy who calls the cabs and he said he was tired. He had worked 17hours straight.
We won't be going back to this hotel.

This was our 4th visit to the Puerto Vallarta area with our first in Nuevo Vallarta (north of airport). We were content with our stay from Sunday to Sunday on Nov 2nd – Nov 9th 2014 at the Riu Jalisco that included 2 families with 4 kids (2 kids at 14 & 2 at 12 years old). The resort is a short 15-20 minute bus transfer north from the airport into a secured ‘resort row’. We arrived at 5pm on Sunday to a very quiet resort (see below in ‘Cons’ list for crowds) with a welcome cocktail and friendly greeting. Check-in was simple and we were upgraded from our regular booked ‘2 Double bed room’ to a ‘Family room’ each that had 2 doubles and one single bed on 5th floor facing interior courtyard. Room was very modern and well equipped with marble countertops, tile floors, balcony, firm beds, very firm/flat pillows and generous bathroom with separate toilet room & shower. One thing the bathroom was lacking is a closable door, which would provide privacy in a ‘family room’ for changing and ect. The shower has a removable shower wand with different settings and lots of pressure. Lobby is open air, so it can get hot under stagnant conditions when there is no breeze, but try to manage with ceiling fans. Included Wi-Fi is limited to 90 minutes per day (2 devices) in the lobby only…. so we were grateful for drink service provided when ‘surfing the net'.

Pros:
- Service in buffets, restaurants, lobby, front desk, bars (lobby, outside pavilion, swim-up) are superb. The workers show a great pride in their resort and themselves trying to provide quick and accurate service. I even had a gin/tonic/lime blended drink that bartenders and I labelled “Caramba” that they made in advance when seeing me in line.
- Italian & Steak House reserved restaurants were our favorites
- Special gratitude to Eli (Eliah) & Karla in the lobby La Cantina bar for friendly & funny conversation and great drinks! Our kids loved Eli and could wait to see him when his shift started
- Hotel grounds are impeccable and manicured to perfection. Each day starts spotless on the resort.
- Activity personnel and variety is boundless. These people cared and learned our names very quickly and tried to get all patrons involved around the pool and grounds. Typical activities included pool water polo, water/beach volleyball but they also had daily exercise classes of Zumba and extreme Cross-fit training. My 14 yr old son loved the pellet air gun shooting activity each morning. A centralized board showed times and activities for the week.
- Boogie boards are included for body surfing at beach
- Nightly entertainment is very good with dancing, circus and or course it wouldn’t be complete without a ‘Michael Jackson Show Night’! There is a disco that opens at 11:30pm each night, although we could hear the tunes pumping from our balcony, we did not attend.
- 2 huge pools, one with multiple short waterslides (kids) and 1 small tots pool area
- Beach area huge and sheltered from sun by multiple palm trees and loungers. You could always find a good spot in or out of the sun. Fantastic sandy beach with great body surfing waves!!
- 24 hour Sports Bar with snacks (hot dogs, hamburgers, fresh fruit, nachos w/ cheese sauce, fresh fixins’)
- Quick taxi service (we required either 2 cars or a large van for our 2 families travels)
- Food variety & selection in buffets and reserved restaurants (reservations were similar to all other Mexican resorts that we stayed with 2 day advance that was easily manageable). There was always something good to eat. Reserved restaurants provide an escape from the main buffet line-up chaos and provides a sit down, relaxed and served meal. These are not all A la carte and have buffet salad bar, appetizers and dessert.
- (Flaming) Spanish coffee service in buffet is a must try!
- Bucerias town & market 15 minute taxi drive north
- In-Room safe….. although both had periodic issues locking
- In-Room liquor dispenser & stocked mini fridge-
- Booked Pirate Ship Day excursion via our Sun Wing travel which includes breakfast, drinks, pirate show, snorkeling, beach time/banana boat option (+$20), lunch and entertainment back on voyage. Lots of entertainment for its value but really is catered to families and kids…. Although our adults had lots of fun too. We didn’t do banana boat on beach as from being on trip previously there was only time for one ride per person for $20 extra.
- Ability to use a Riu Vallarta facility & food/drink, which is 5 minute walk and only one resort over from Riu Jalisco. It is a more traditional decorated resort with a segregated pool system of ‘Adults Only’ & ‘Other’.

Cons:
- Crowded on weekends……… Ay Caramba! Since we arrived Sunday evening, we were not aware (other than reading previous Trip Advisor reviews) of the ‘apocalypse’ that was to occur 5 days from then on Friday afternoon. We were told by service staff that the resort ballooned by an astonishing +/-1300 Mexican locals spending their weekend(s) at this resort likely filling all the remaining rooms in the 700 room complex. They must get a ‘killer’ of a deal?? Sunday evening to Friday morning in the resort is very pleasant and you have free rein and short line-ups to bars/buffets. Come the weekend the pools, buffets and bars are packed. Yes there are some disrespectful people, so being respectful Canadians we stood in line and watched in revulsion as locals young and old stepped in front & around you. Service staff try to accommodate and recognize that international tourists tip, where locals are less inclined.
- Wi-Fi limited to 90 minutes per day (2 devices in lobby only)
- Pool designation….. of which there are 3 pool including a small tot playground pool and 2 large pools. I think people assume the large pools are separated into ‘Adult Only w/ swim-up bar’ and ‘Kids w/ waterslides’ but I never saw a sign indicating ‘Adults Only’ or other. However, even as a family with children, I think the resort does need to segregate the pools as you can’t walk with drinks in hand 10’ from swim up bar to pool’s edge without a kid-cannon baller splashing water into your face/drinks. Unsupervised kids in the swim-up bar pool (‘Adult’) are the major issue….. ‘UNSUPERVISED’ being the key word. Let them be unsupervised in the pool with the water slides where running and splashing is actually encouraged & expected!
- Towel Exchange is way off by the tot’s pool/playground (aka giant Toblerone Bar shack) and not centralized in between the main 2 pools which is also on the way to beach. Make sense?? Plus the towel exchange closes before the pools??? What?? Yeah, I know. Therefore if you are on the beach or in the pools later into afternoon/evening, you will have to carry wet towels to your room and exchange the next day.
- Elevator centralized in middle of hotel making it inconvenient to take as our rooms were halfway down wing. Took stairs to 5th floor up & down a lot.
- Travel off the resort is very costly, especially for larger groups. Bucerias town is 15 minutes north via taxi or 170 peso per car each way (4 people, X 2 at 340 pesos for 8 passengers with no deal). Taxi to Puerto Vallarta Malecon was 460 pesos each way for our van with 8 passengers. There is a bus service to Malecon, but would have consisted of transferring in 2 buses and taking over 1.5hours each way & not much cheaper for 8 people anyway! We stayed south of airport in past trips in Puerto Vallarta with taxi rides per car each way costing as little as 50 pesos from resort to Malecon for a 15 minute drive.
- Firm beds (typical Mexico)
- Very Firm flat pillows, but when requested we received 4 more softer ones for 8 in total

We had a great time none the less and got a great price for our 8-day package of ~$500/adult + taxes all inclusive direct from Calgary, AB. The teenage kids had a blast, and so did adults! I would recommend to families with the note that it gets very busy here on weekends.

Just returned home from our second vacation in Puerto Vallarta. On the first trip we stayed at another all inclusive resort less than two miles from the Riu. This trip was our first stay at the Riu Jalisco (RJ).

The RJ staff was VERY courtious and pleasent to be around. Lots of smiles here. Many could speak English quite well, while others had a more difficult time. But my thoughts on this is that I am going to vacation in thier country, they should not have to speak my language fluently.... just so we could communicate was all that really mattered to me.

The resort was quite clean, it seemed someone was always around cleaning something and picking up after the guests. Our room was always cleaned in a timely manner. Our maid did not speak english, but cleaned the room well. Any valuables that we forgot to put into the room safe were still there when we got back. A daily tip is not necessary, but I don't think it would hurt to lay a buck or two on the pillow occassionally.

The pools were also kept clean and had music and daily activities. The pool bar was well stocked and had plenty of bar tenders. If the day is forecasted to be nice and hot and you plan to hang around the pool all day, I would recomend getting your loungers 'reserved' early.

The beach was clean and had vendors walking around trying to sell trinkets. I actually like this. Have a couple of drinks, set back, and let them brink the products to you! But be ready to bargain. The first asked price is not the one I would pay. Don't be afraid to 'low ball, them. The ocean had some current.... watch your kids! The first day the tide was quite low and the ocean was shallow and you could walk in for a long ways and feel safe. Every day after that the water was higher and the waves were more aggressive. We had a great time playing but needed to pay attention to our surroundings. The floor of the ocean in our swim area was all sand with very few rocks around - loved it.

You like buffets? Get ready for breakfast, noon and dinner buffets. Many times they had exactly the same food. Lots of variety at each buffet. They did have two restaraunts that you could make reservations at. Reservations are made by going to the lobby and standing in line while one customer service rep took your reservation. You could not call down from your room or make reservations the day before. Just get there a little before the rep is on duty and you'll avoid standing in line.

Bars... lets talk bars. There are many bars on the resort. Only one of the bars stayed open 24/7 (the sports bar) which is located near the lobby. In the sports bar they had 3 pool tables, one foose ball table, all coin operated. The sports bar had some cold food for all you late nighters.

All other bars were stocked with what seemed to be the same alcohol. One thing I would like is to have Coca-Cola products instead of Pepsi-Cola, but this is just a preference. Again, you don't need to tip but the tenders appreciate this and seem to remeber you a little better. One suggestion I would make to you is... Bring your own (large) mug with a snap on lid. The Riu Jalisco (along with the other resort we stayed at during our earlier trip) served drinks in 8 oz. glasses. If you like the exersize, leave your mug at home and make many trips to the bar for your favorite beverage - not my choice! If asked, they are more than willing to put extra alcohol in you drinks.

The nightly entertainment was good, the dancers were talented and the shows were of different variety. Plenty of seating, some located under a roof and some outside. This location also had two bars to serve you.

Kids activities could have been better. They have a pool/daycare area with ping pong tables, botchi ball pits and shuffleboard. I thought they could offer more in this area. But since my family likes to hang at the beach, these areas were not greatly utilized.

Bring good shoes with good grips on the botttom. The Riu has plenty of tile foors, and when wet can become quite silppery. My wife slipped and fell one time going down the stairs toward the garden area. Thankfully she was unhurt! I had an old pair of flip flops that I had worn most of the time. The bottoms were flat with very little grip. I slipped many times when the tile was wet but never went down. Once I changed into better, grippier shoes I had no problems.

One thing I had read in other reviews was that the hallways outside of your room are noisy and that any conversation in the hall could be heard inside your room..... I didn't believe the review.... until my first night stay. Drunk people can be loud!!! And in the Riu you can definitely hear the people in the hall from quite a ways away. Bring ear plugs or something that can produce white noise to eliminate or deaden the noise, or be the last ones up. People in the room above us could also be heard moving furniture. . . . not the bed - if you know what I mean.

Another piece of advise: remove the plastic mattress pad from the bed upon arrival. They are noisey and cause you to sweat at night. Also, the beds were a little to firm for me.

All in all we had a wonderfull time. Could things have been better? Sure they could have, but overall we were very pleased. I would go back to the Riu Jalisco again! Thanks for a great relaxing vacation!

We where there for the second time for this year. No change, the hotel is great, and the food and service is excellent. Small thigs. Our roomkey didn't work for two days. But it was a weekend and the locksmidt was not available.
The food is fantastic. The variety is unbelivable. And the service is just great. They are well selected and welltrained people, with smile and professionalism. We so the management all the time checking and rechecking. The room was standard, clean. The parks, pools, bech are clean and beautiful.
We wanted to go to the City and dicovered not to much info. The booking agencies selling only their programs. Not worth the money.
We went to a wale watching trip, - with a unkomfortable sailboat - we found only pelicans for $55/p. The Rithm of the Night also expensive and 2x1.5 hours with drinking people. Not worth it. But if you don't leave the hotel, you have a fantastic and relaxing time.
We will go back again.

Agree with the above but would add this comment. Last year, we took cheese strings for our grandkids to keep in the fridge in our room. We happened to take the mozzarella ones and that was an issue as "natural mozzarella" can't be brought into Mexico. We were one of the unlucky ones and were pulled aside to search our bags. They found the cheese strings but due to the language barrier, the customs agent didn't understand when we tried to explain that the cheese strings are processed cheese, not the same as natural mozzarella. They confiscated our cheese strings. Long story short, if you take your own, take the cheddar or marble ones - lol.
