This was our 4th visit to the Puerto Vallarta area with our first in Nuevo Vallarta (north of airport). We were content with our stay from Sunday to Sunday on Nov 2nd – Nov 9th 2014 at the Riu Jalisco that included 2 families with 4 kids (2 kids at 14 & 2 at 12 years old). The resort is a short 15-20 minute bus transfer north from the airport into a secured ‘resort row’. We arrived at 5pm on Sunday to a very quiet resort (see below in ‘Cons’ list for crowds) with a welcome cocktail and friendly greeting. Check-in was simple and we were upgraded from our regular booked ‘2 Double bed room’ to a ‘Family room’ each that had 2 doubles and one single bed on 5th floor facing interior courtyard. Room was very modern and well equipped with marble countertops, tile floors, balcony, firm beds, very firm/flat pillows and generous bathroom with separate toilet room & shower. One thing the bathroom was lacking is a closable door, which would provide privacy in a ‘family room’ for changing and ect. The shower has a removable shower wand with different settings and lots of pressure. Lobby is open air, so it can get hot under stagnant conditions when there is no breeze, but try to manage with ceiling fans. Included Wi-Fi is limited to 90 minutes per day (2 devices) in the lobby only…. so we were grateful for drink service provided when ‘surfing the net'.
Pros:
- Service in buffets, restaurants, lobby, front desk, bars (lobby, outside pavilion, swim-up) are superb. The workers show a great pride in their resort and themselves trying to provide quick and accurate service. I even had a gin/tonic/lime blended drink that bartenders and I labelled “Caramba” that they made in advance when seeing me in line.
- Italian & Steak House reserved restaurants were our favorites
- Special gratitude to Eli (Eliah) & Karla in the lobby La Cantina bar for friendly & funny conversation and great drinks! Our kids loved Eli and could wait to see him when his shift started
- Hotel grounds are impeccable and manicured to perfection. Each day starts spotless on the resort.
- Activity personnel and variety is boundless. These people cared and learned our names very quickly and tried to get all patrons involved around the pool and grounds. Typical activities included pool water polo, water/beach volleyball but they also had daily exercise classes of Zumba and extreme Cross-fit training. My 14 yr old son loved the pellet air gun shooting activity each morning. A centralized board showed times and activities for the week.
- Boogie boards are included for body surfing at beach
- Nightly entertainment is very good with dancing, circus and or course it wouldn’t be complete without a ‘Michael Jackson Show Night’! There is a disco that opens at 11:30pm each night, although we could hear the tunes pumping from our balcony, we did not attend.
- 2 huge pools, one with multiple short waterslides (kids) and 1 small tots pool area
- Beach area huge and sheltered from sun by multiple palm trees and loungers. You could always find a good spot in or out of the sun. Fantastic sandy beach with great body surfing waves!!
- 24 hour Sports Bar with snacks (hot dogs, hamburgers, fresh fruit, nachos w/ cheese sauce, fresh fixins’)
- Quick taxi service (we required either 2 cars or a large van for our 2 families travels)
- Food variety & selection in buffets and reserved restaurants (reservations were similar to all other Mexican resorts that we stayed with 2 day advance that was easily manageable). There was always something good to eat. Reserved restaurants provide an escape from the main buffet line-up chaos and provides a sit down, relaxed and served meal. These are not all A la carte and have buffet salad bar, appetizers and dessert.
- (Flaming) Spanish coffee service in buffet is a must try!
- Bucerias town & market 15 minute taxi drive north
- In-Room safe….. although both had periodic issues locking
- In-Room liquor dispenser & stocked mini fridge-
- Booked Pirate Ship Day excursion via our Sun Wing travel which includes breakfast, drinks, pirate show, snorkeling, beach time/banana boat option (+$20), lunch and entertainment back on voyage. Lots of entertainment for its value but really is catered to families and kids…. Although our adults had lots of fun too. We didn’t do banana boat on beach as from being on trip previously there was only time for one ride per person for $20 extra.
- Ability to use a Riu Vallarta facility & food/drink, which is 5 minute walk and only one resort over from Riu Jalisco. It is a more traditional decorated resort with a segregated pool system of ‘Adults Only’ & ‘Other’.
Cons:
- Crowded on weekends……… Ay Caramba! Since we arrived Sunday evening, we were not aware (other than reading previous Trip Advisor reviews) of the ‘apocalypse’ that was to occur 5 days from then on Friday afternoon. We were told by service staff that the resort ballooned by an astonishing +/-1300 Mexican locals spending their weekend(s) at this resort likely filling all the remaining rooms in the 700 room complex. They must get a ‘killer’ of a deal?? Sunday evening to Friday morning in the resort is very pleasant and you have free rein and short line-ups to bars/buffets. Come the weekend the pools, buffets and bars are packed. Yes there are some disrespectful people, so being respectful Canadians we stood in line and watched in revulsion as locals young and old stepped in front & around you. Service staff try to accommodate and recognize that international tourists tip, where locals are less inclined.
- Wi-Fi limited to 90 minutes per day (2 devices in lobby only)
- Pool designation….. of which there are 3 pool including a small tot playground pool and 2 large pools. I think people assume the large pools are separated into ‘Adult Only w/ swim-up bar’ and ‘Kids w/ waterslides’ but I never saw a sign indicating ‘Adults Only’ or other. However, even as a family with children, I think the resort does need to segregate the pools as you can’t walk with drinks in hand 10’ from swim up bar to pool’s edge without a kid-cannon baller splashing water into your face/drinks. Unsupervised kids in the swim-up bar pool (‘Adult’) are the major issue….. ‘UNSUPERVISED’ being the key word. Let them be unsupervised in the pool with the water slides where running and splashing is actually encouraged & expected!
- Towel Exchange is way off by the tot’s pool/playground (aka giant Toblerone Bar shack) and not centralized in between the main 2 pools which is also on the way to beach. Make sense?? Plus the towel exchange closes before the pools??? What?? Yeah, I know. Therefore if you are on the beach or in the pools later into afternoon/evening, you will have to carry wet towels to your room and exchange the next day.
- Elevator centralized in middle of hotel making it inconvenient to take as our rooms were halfway down wing. Took stairs to 5th floor up & down a lot.
- Travel off the resort is very costly, especially for larger groups. Bucerias town is 15 minutes north via taxi or 170 peso per car each way (4 people, X 2 at 340 pesos for 8 passengers with no deal). Taxi to Puerto Vallarta Malecon was 460 pesos each way for our van with 8 passengers. There is a bus service to Malecon, but would have consisted of transferring in 2 buses and taking over 1.5hours each way & not much cheaper for 8 people anyway! We stayed south of airport in past trips in Puerto Vallarta with taxi rides per car each way costing as little as 50 pesos from resort to Malecon for a 15 minute drive.
- Firm beds (typical Mexico)
- Very Firm flat pillows, but when requested we received 4 more softer ones for 8 in total
We had a great time none the less and got a great price for our 8-day package of ~$500/adult + taxes all inclusive direct from Calgary, AB. The teenage kids had a blast, and so did adults! I would recommend to families with the note that it gets very busy here on weekends.
