Having stayed at the RIU Tequila last thats what I'll compare this RIU to.
It fell a little short.
Check in was OK, room not ready until after 3PM, but of course they took the bags and gave us wrist bands so the vacation at least started on time.
The lobby, what the hell is RIU trying to do? it was a purple and chrome monstrosity more in line with a strip club or brothel then a hotel. I saw similar designs in the remodeled Riu Playacar on the caribbean coast too. Hideous with nothing that reflects the destination, country or anything reflecting locale. This theme spilled over into the restaurants and common areas too. This is a big chain so these design changes had to come out of some committee or management consensus. It's hard to imagine someone would decide to spend millions on renovations this bad.
The room, 222, smelled horrible upon walking in, as did the hallway outside it. I used an old bartenders trick and covered the shower drain with ice. That helped a lot and the smell didn't return as badly for the rest of the week. Maybe the "P" trap had dried out? The room itself is basic and functional. Their was no real hotel information provided and no TV guide. We found 2 english channels, both 24 hour news, and of the 2 FOX news only worked half the time. The light fixtures were cheap plastic that couldn't have cost more the $5.00 each. The maid service however was good and you really only sleep in the rooms on vacation anyway. The RIU magazine is at least a year old too. The mini-bar was full of booze and the beer and soft drinks were replaced twice in the week we were there.
Restaurants were decent. The buffet Don Emiliano was what you'd expect, good variety at first glance but the same things everyday. Service here though was always very good
We dined in all 4 special restaurants too.
Adelita(Mexican) was vey good. They have a steak wrapped in peppers which was really good. Service great
El Gran Dragon(oriental) OK, actually a buffet but serving mostly ASIAN food. Service good. Watch for Europeans that will cut the line right in front of you for food being put out off the grill. They're shameless.
La Piazza(Italian) This too was good. Wife had the seafood which wasn't very good, But i had a chicken breast stuffed with cheese and peppers that was very good.
La Botana(steak) Just ok. The steaks aren't the quality we're used to which is to be expected, but service was lacking, they never served the sauces to accompany the steak and nobody got close enough for me to ask for any. We just left.
This is also the buffet for lunch, it's on the beach and has great views and breezes. The atmosphere here is terrible though. this is their most prime location, yet being here is like being in the Alfred Hitchcock movie THE BIRDS. They're everywhere. They're loud, messy, constantly fly over your heads and descend on any un-guarded plate in seconds if you stray from the table for more then a foot
The beach. It's rough on the feet. This is NOT a beach you can walk on for any distance. the sand is more like gravel and you sink in. There are however unlike the pool plenty of lounge chairs throughout the day. The pool loungers near the adult pool are all "saved" by 8 or 9 am.
Clientele. Was mostly north American, with the US mid west well represented. Some from England too. but it was the non-english speaking guests that stood out. They're the ones cutting into line where others are waiting to be served and not leaving tips. I saw one woman attempt to ignore a single file line 12 people deep at the pool bar, only thankfully to be ignored by the bartender until it was her turn. The staff seems to know who's tipping and who's not too.
Would I stay here again? Probably not. There was another RIU close by (Vallarta?) that we walked through and liked better because it still had hints of Mexican decor.
A decent value for what we paid though. it was booked through APPLE vacations out of Chicago (ORD) and with non-stop air on ALASKA AIRLINES and transfers was about $2300.00 for a week, Amstar is now providing transfers for APPLE and their service was good
